Puritanism Notes
Puritanism Who were the Puritans? They are a group of Protestants in England who sought to purify (hence the name, “puritan”) the Church of England (Anglicanism) by removing the elements of Anglican Christianity that they considered to be too “Roman Catholic.” They are the type of Christianity that dominated the colonies in North America. What did the Puritans oppose in the Church of England? Answer: Anything they considered to be too “Roman Catholic” -Using crosses in churches -Certain priestly garments -Celebrating communion at an altar -Religious images -Wealth and luxury -Bishops (though some Puritans allowed for an episcopacy) -Celebrating Christmas or saint’s days -Having godparents -Kneeling during communion -Having an organ in church -Etc. Where did the Puritans come from? They primarily arose during the reign of Elizabeth in England (a Protestant) who hoped the Church of England would be a middle way (via media) between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. Whereas Anglicanism (and episcopacy) united the country, the Puritans wanted presbyterian or congregational leadership which threatened the unity of England. In 1593 an act was passed that allowed Puritans to be arrested if they didn’t attend Anglican church services. After Elizabeth died she was succeeded by James I. James needed the bishops of the Church of England to unify his country, so religious groups that did not belong to that (Anabaptists, Independents, etc.) received less toleration. In 1605, due to English oppression of Catholics, a group of Catholics rented a space below where the British Parliament met. There they put large wine barrels filled with gunpowder in an attempt to blow up the king and several Puritans who sat in Parliament. -

Whilst there is now a statutory right to affirm, instead of to swear, an affirmation itself constitutes a formula, an asseveration to tell the truth. Zeeman J, in the case of R v Mansell decided in 1993, declined to accept evidence on oath from a child aged twelve years because he held inter alia that the child "[had] no notion of the nature or obligation of an oath in the sense that he [had] no understanding of what it is to swear to tell the truth or promising God to tell the truth and has no expectation that God will reward or punish in this world or the next".(1) Whilst His Honour's decision was overturned on appeal, the case demonstrates that oath-taking is fundamental to our legal system and its function in society. -

Page 1 of 30 Renaissance Studies 1 Recent studies in the early modern sermon suggest that preaching matters more than print. Peter McCullough, one of the most important sermon scholars working today (and the general editor of the Oxford edition of Donne’s sermons), argues, in the ‘Introduction’ to his volume of Launcelot Andrewes’ sermons, that ‘Sermons, although avidly consumed by Elizabethan and Jacobean readers, were first and foremost live, theatrical events. As Vickers has said of classical oratory, they are “performance-art”’ (xxxviii). In another article, McCullough suggests that ‘It is dangerous… to treat “sermons” as an undifferentiated category to which the same kinds of interpretation always apply. Early modern sermons – whether “elite” or otherwise – were radically occasional pieces of performed writing, contingent upon the contexts in and for which they were delivered. They suffer, in turn, from any interpretative engagement that does not attend carefully to the circumstances outside the remaining textual artefact that moulded and shaped it ab origine ’ (‘Preaching’ 213-4). McCullough is not wrong: it is often the case that sermons need to be studied in context with great care. Court sermons, McCullough’s specialty, especially repay the kind of embedded reading that pays attention to audiences, political and religious context, and other important influences. I take issue, however, with the assumption that our readings of the ‘remaining textual artifact’ need always to be embedded in the performance of the sermon in the pulpit. I certainly agree that we must not read all sermons as if Accepted Article they were ‘undifferentiated’ but that makes it all the more important to recognize when early modern sermons require other modes of reading to discern what’s at stake in their publication for their writers, editors, and readers. -

D. Thesis University of Durham 1993 In the early modern period, women were commonly regarded as unruly and morally suspect beings. During the period, however, there was a revision in the moral status of women. Behmenism is representative of the process whereby women were raised to the status of morally elevating beings. In Jacob Boehme's theosophy, both the godhead and prelapsarian man have a feminine element, the Virgin Sophia; women are a sort of fallen counterpart to Sophia. The emphasis of early Behmenists, such as John Pordage, was on Sophia's passivity and chastity. -

These may preach where the author cannot, and (which is more) when he is not.” This prediction by one of the great Puritans has had many fulfilments. An ungodly Welsh clergyman, shopping at a fair in the eighteenth century, bought an article which happened to be wrapped in a page torn from an old Puritan folio. The reading of that one page led to his sound conversion. As Luther said, “Satan hates the use of pens,” and never were pens more powerfully wielded in the cause of God than by the Puritan divines of the seventeenth century. Nor have their books outlived their usefulness. Although the original volumes are worn with age, the truths found in them are as fresh as the new formats in which they are now appearing. There is no better introduction to the Puritans than the writings of Richard Sibbes, who is, in many ways, a typical Puritan. “Sibbes never wastes the student’s time,” wrote Charles Haddon Spurgeon, “he scatters pearls and diamonds with both hands.” The facts concerning Sibbes’ life can be briefly stated (there is a full account in Volume 1 of the Banner of Truth Trust edition of his Works). He was born at Tostock, Suffolk, in 1577 and went to school at Bury St Edmunds. His father intended Richard to follow his own trade as a wheelwright, but, with the help of friends, he went up to St John’s College, Cambridge in 1595. -

He was buried at the Temple Church ten days later. John Gauden preached the funeral sermon, and later remarked on the quality of his audience. Brownrigg’s eminence was demonstrated, he suggested, By that honourable and ample concourse of so many eagles to his corpse and funerals, which were attended by noblemen, by gentlemen, by judges, by lawyers, by divines, by merchants and citizens of the best sort then in London; these flocked to his sepulchre, these followed the bier, these recounted his worth, these deplored their own and their age’s loss of him.2 Thomas Fuller, who also attended the service, lamented the loss of Brownrigg’s salutary influence upon the life of the Church. In his History of the Worthies of England, which was published a couple of years later, he wrote: I know all accidents are minuted and momented by divine providence; and yet I hope I may say without sin, his was an untimely death, not to himself (prepared thereunto) but as to his longer life; which the prayers of pious people requested, the need of the Church required, the date of nature could have permitted, but the pleasure of God (to which all must submit) denied.
