Cover Page The handle http://hdl.handle.net/1887/22159 holds various files of this Leiden University dissertation Author: Pederson, Randall James Title: Unity in diversity : English puritans and the puritan reformation, 1603-1689 Issue Date: 2013-11-07 Chapter 3 John Downame (1571-1652) 3.1 Introduction John Downame (or Downham) was one of the greatest exponents of the precisianist strain within Puritanism during the pre-revolutionary years of the seventeenth century, a prominent member of London Puritanism, and renowned casuist.1 His fame rests chiefly in his nineteen published works, most of which were works of practical divinity, such as his four-part magnum opus, The Christian Warfare (1604-18), and his A Guide to Godlynesse (1622), a shorter, though still copious, manual for Christian living. Downame was also known for his role in publishing two of the most popular theological manuals: Sir Henry Finch’s The Summe of Sacred Divinitie (1620), which consisted of a much more expanded version of Finch’s earlier Sacred Doctrine (1613), and Archbishop James Ussher’s A Body of Divinitie (1645), which was published from rough manuscripts and without Ussher’s consent, having been intended for private use.2 Downame also had a role in codifying the Westminster annotations on the Bible, being one of a few city ministers to work on the project, though he never sat at the Westminster Assembly.3 Downame’s older brother, 1 Various historians from the seventeenth century to the present have spelled Downame’s name differently (either Downame or Downham). Puritanism Notes
Puritanism Who were the Puritans? They are a group of Protestants in England who sought to purify (hence the name, “puritan”) the Church of England (Anglicanism) by removing the elements of Anglican Christianity that they considered to be too “Roman Catholic.” They are the type of Christianity that dominated the colonies in North America. What did the Puritans oppose in the Church of England? Answer: Anything they considered to be too “Roman Catholic” -Using crosses in churches -Certain priestly garments -Celebrating communion at an altar -Religious images -Wealth and luxury -Bishops (though some Puritans allowed for an episcopacy) -Celebrating Christmas or saint’s days -Having godparents -Kneeling during communion -Having an organ in church -Etc. Where did the Puritans come from? They primarily arose during the reign of Elizabeth in England (a Protestant) who hoped the Church of England would be a middle way (via media) between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. Whereas Anglicanism (and episcopacy) united the country, the Puritans wanted presbyterian or congregational leadership which threatened the unity of England. In 1593 an act was passed that allowed Puritans to be arrested if they didn’t attend Anglican church services. After Elizabeth died she was succeeded by James I. James needed the bishops of the Church of England to unify his country, so religious groups that did not belong to that (Anabaptists, Independents, etc.) received less toleration. In 1605, due to English oppression of Catholics, a group of Catholics rented a space below where the British Parliament met. There they put large wine barrels filled with gunpowder in an attempt to blow up the king and several Puritans who sat in Parliament. -

BENJAMIN KEACH’S DOCTRINE OF THE HUMAN WILL Introduction The nature and freedom of the human will has been deliberated and debated throughout the history of the Christian church by some of the church’s best and most gifted theologians, and it continues to be debated to this very day. It is one of those vital theological issues that serves as a touchstone of the rest of a theological system because it both shapes and is shaped by the whole body of doctrine articulated in a full-orbed and consistent biblical theology. Because it occupies such a prominent and central place in the matrix of any theology, the question of the nature and freedom of the will is never established or articulated in an historical or theological vacuum, but inevitably and always in light of the progress of the church’s historical discussion and understanding of the nature of the will and the interconnection and unity of truths that compose any particular theological system. Benjamin Keach’s theology of the will reflects this reality inasmuch as it was articulated in light of the church’s biblical theological understanding of his own time and was vitally related to the rest of his biblical theology. For his part, Keach stood squarely in the Reformed tradition, and held to the Calvinistic doctrine of the nature and freedom of the will. It was this Calvinistic perspective which he argued and defended so forcefully and consistently throughout his published material. For Keach, the doctrine of the will was not simply a matter of philosophical speculation or a secondary matter of theology, but instead, it was something integral and foundational to the gospel itself. -

Page 1 of 30 Renaissance Studies 1 Recent studies in the early modern sermon suggest that preaching matters more than print. Peter McCullough, one of the most important sermon scholars working today (and the general editor of the Oxford edition of Donne’s sermons), argues, in the ‘Introduction’ to his volume of Launcelot Andrewes’ sermons, that ‘Sermons, although avidly consumed by Elizabethan and Jacobean readers, were first and foremost live, theatrical events. As Vickers has said of classical oratory, they are “performance-art”’ (xxxviii). In another article, McCullough suggests that ‘It is dangerous… to treat “sermons” as an undifferentiated category to which the same kinds of interpretation always apply. Early modern sermons – whether “elite” or otherwise – were radically occasional pieces of performed writing, contingent upon the contexts in and for which they were delivered. They suffer, in turn, from any interpretative engagement that does not attend carefully to the circumstances outside the remaining textual artefact that moulded and shaped it ab origine ’ (‘Preaching’ 213-4). McCullough is not wrong: it is often the case that sermons need to be studied in context with great care. Court sermons, McCullough’s specialty, especially repay the kind of embedded reading that pays attention to audiences, political and religious context, and other important influences. I take issue, however, with the assumption that our readings of the ‘remaining textual artifact’ need always to be embedded in the performance of the sermon in the pulpit. I certainly agree that we must not read all sermons as if Accepted Article they were ‘undifferentiated’ but that makes it all the more important to recognize when early modern sermons require other modes of reading to discern what’s at stake in their publication for their writers, editors, and readers. -

Ball The passing of the English crown from the Tudors to the Stuarts was to prove a significant milestone in the development of Protestant thought in England. With the accession of James I in 1603, the Puritan2 movement, which had taken root in the later years of Elizabeth’s reign, came to shape the beliefs of increasing numbers of people, and this notwithstanding the king’s early threat to “harry” Puritans out of the land and the later restric- tions imposed upon them by the repressive William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury. William Haller remarks that from this time Puritan preachers “increased in number and influence faster than ever before, finding a grow- ing audience ever more willing to listen”.3 As time passed and the Bible was more and more expounded by Puritan preachers and writers, clergy and la- ity alike became increasingly aware of a strong eschatological emphasis in Scripture. -
