  • What's New, Joseph Rodriguez? Interview by Nadine Dinter
What’s New, Joseph Rodriguez? Interview by Nadine Dinter loeildelaphotographie.com/en/whats-new-joseph-rodriguez-interview-by-nadine-dinter-dv Nadine Dinter April 16, 2021 The American photographer Joseph Rodriguez (*1951, Brooklyn/USA) is a legend when it comes to street photography, particularly his arresting images of Latinx Communities in the United States, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Drawn to the social documentary style, he sought out photography in an attempt to challenge stereotypes and expose the world to truthful portraits of American struggle. People are at the heart of his work, which often emerges after lengthy periods of time spent gaining the trust of his subjects. The results are raw and gritty images that are full of life, revealing the resilience and beauty of the people he portrays. While he officially started taking pictures in the 1980s, his legendary series TAXI. Journey Through My Windows: 1977–1987 marks the very beginning of his photographic career. In these images he gives us slices of life in New York City, taken on the fly from behind the wheel of his cab, as a calm witness to a candid moment. This decade of images laid the groundwork for the insightful, humanistic style that brought Rodriguez widespread acclaim in the decades to come. On the occasion of the recent publication of these photos as a monograph as well as his upcoming solo show of the same name at Galerie Bene Taschen in Cologne, we connected with Rodriguez to find out how everything came about, and what’s new. 1/4 Nadine Dinter: Your new book is called Taxi: Journey Through My Windows 1977–1987, and takes viewers on trips through New York, seen through your lens.

  • The Self in Black and White Interfaces: Studies in Visual Culture Editors Mark J
the self in black and white Interfaces: Studies in Visual Culture Editors Mark J. Williams and Adrian W. B. Randolph, Dartmouth College This series, sponsored by Dartmouth College Press, develops and promotes the study of visual culture from a variety of critical and methodological perspectives. Its impetus derives from the increasing importance of visual signs in everyday life, and from the rapid expansion of what are termed “new media.” The broad cultural and social dynamics attendant to these developments present new challenges and opportunities across and within the disciplines. These have resulted in a trans-disciplinary fascination with all things visual, from “high” to “low,” and from esoteric to popular. This series brings together approaches to visual cul- ture — broadly conceived — that assess these dynamics critically and that break new ground in understanding their effects and implications. The PHOTO REVIEW NEWSLETTER July / August 2020 BLACK LIVES MATTER Black Lives Matter. This is an indisputable statement. Around the world, murders of Black people by police and vigilantes have inspired uprisings, rage, despair, and demands for systemic change. While these demands often focus on the injustices of the government, non-Black people should all be asking ourselves what systems we are a part of and how we might influ- ence these systems to be part of necessary change. As you well know, I am the editor of The Photo Review. As you might know, I am a white, cisgender, straight man, old enough to be in the at-risk group during this pan- demic. I do not com- pare these experiences with those of Black Americans — rather, I want to express that I see my fight against various forms of white supremacy on a very personal level. I know I must use what privilege I have to work toward the implementation of the values of the Black Lives Matter movement. John Dowell: The Healing Table, 2016, from Cotton: The Soft, Dangerous Beauty of the Past, archival pigment print, 27˝x34˝ My work is situated at the intersection of fine art photography, journalism, and the art market. So that is where I’ll start.
