Deposit Guide Contact: email ON THE MEANING OF A CUT: TOWARDS A THEORY OF EDITING Bartłomiej Dziadosz A dissertation submitted to the Department of English and Humanities in candidacy for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Birkbeck, University of London October 2018 Abstract I confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own and the work of other persons is appropriately acknowledged. This thesis looks at a variety of discourses about film editing in order to explore the possibility, on the one hand, of drawing connections between them, and on the other, of addressing some of their problematic aspects. Some forms of fragmentation existed from the very beginnings of the history of the moving image, and the thesis argues that forms of editorial control were executed by early exhibitors, film pioneers, writers, and directors, as well as by a fully- fledged film editor. This historical reconstruction of how the profession of editor evolved sheds light on the specific aspects of their work. Following on from that, it is proposed that models of editing fall under two broad paradigms: of montage and continuity.

1 AFRICA IN THE MOVIES: Red Dust (Victor Fleming, 1932); Mogambo (John Ford, 1953); Hotel Rwanda (Terry George, 2004); The Constant Gardener (Fernando Meirelles, 2005); The Last King of Scotland (Kevin Macdonald, 2006); Blood Diamond (Edward Zwick, 2006); and White Material (Claire Denis, 2009) Mogambo is very entertaining, as long as you abandon all memories of Jane Goodall and Jomo Kenyatta. (Clark Gable is taking Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly, and Donald Sinden on an expedition upcountry in East Africa. They’re in a canoe. He has just explained, by remote implication, what female circumcision is for). KELLY: Oh, I think I understand. GABLE: Sorry to be so blunt about it. KELLY: No, no, no – it was my denseness – I should have realised – GARDNER: Brother! I can take your Cook’s tour round the zoo, but when you come to this mental striptease and (glances at Kelly) hiding behind Louisa May Alcott, I wanna powder. GABLE: Watch it! Hippo! (Hippo attacks canoe. Gardner falls backwards with legs in air.) John Ford is interested in the natives in Africa the way he’s elsewhere interested in redskins in Monument Valley. African people are on a level with African animals. Gable’s a big game trapper (not hunter – he brings ’em back alive, for zoos and circuses) and Ford films the scores of men whom he employs the same way he films the elephants and gazelles: without making any distinction between the men and the animals. The animals are never seen in the same shots as the artistes. Often the artistes are acting against blue screens.

This thesis titled A Content Analysis of the Gender of Academy Award Nominees and Winners for Films Released between 1927 and 2010 by KATIE E. LABOVITZ has been approved for the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the Scripps College of Communication by _______________________________________________ Joseph P. Bernt Professor of Journalism _______________________________________________ Gregory J. Shepherd Dean, Scripps College of Communication ii ABSTRACT LABOVITZ, KATIE E., M.S., June 2011, Journalism A Content Analysis of the Gender of Academy Award Nominees and Winners for Films Released between 1927 and 2010 (92 pp.) Director of Thesis: Joseph P. Bernt Using a coding instrument designed specifically for this study, the researcher analyzed the gender of Academy Award nominees and winners in all categories in which potential for direct competition between women and men existed. This study examined if there was gender discrepancy in terms of whose work was recognized in the film industry by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Data from 83 Academy Awards ceremonies honoring the films released from 1927 to 2010 yielded 1,471 cases that, when analyzed, supported the statement that more men than women have been nominated for, and winners of, Academy Awards in every category other than Costume Design. Examining the results by year of nominations, wins, and categories showed trends in the numbers of women and men nominees and winners.

John Ford Birth name: Sean Aloysius O'Feeney Director, Producer Birth Feb 1, 1895 (Cape Elizabeth, ME) Death Aug 31, 1973 (Palm Desert, CA) Genres Drama, Western, Romance, Comedy Maine-born John Ford originally went to Hollywood in the shadow of his older brother, Francis, an actor/writer/director who had worked on Broadway. Originally a laborer, propman's assistant, and occasional stuntman for his brother, he rose to became an assistant director and supporting actor before turning to directing in 1917. Ford became best known for his Westerns, of which he made dozens through the 1920s, but he didn't achieve status as a major director until the mid-'30s, when his films for RKO (The Lost Patrol [1934], The Informer [1935]), 20th Century Fox (Young Mr. Lincoln [1939], The Grapes of Wrath [1940]), and Walter Wanger (Stagecoach [1939]), won over the public, the critics, and earned various Oscars and Academy nominations. His 1940s films included one military-produced documentary co-directed by Ford and cinematographer Gregg Toland, December 7th (1943), which creaks badly today (especially compared with Frank Capra's Why We Fight series); a major war film (They Were Expendable [1945]); the historically-based drama My Darling Clementine (1946); and the "cavalry trilogy" of Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), and Rio Grande (1950), each of which starred John Wayne. My Darling Clementine and the cavalry trilogy contain some of the most powerful images of the American West ever shot, and are considered definitive examples of the Western. Ford also had a weakness for Irish and Gaelic subject matter, in which a great degree of sentimentality was evident, most notably How Green Was My Valley (1941) and The Quiet Man (1952), which was his most personal film, and one of his most popular.
