John Ford Films at Museum The Museum of Modern Art *>• ** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart EARLY JOHN FORD FILMS AT MUSEUM Twenty-four early films by one of America's greatest directors, John Ford, will be shown from August 21 through September 28 at The Museum of Modern Art. Dating from 1917 to 1937, the pictures, some of which have not been seen publicly since their original release, have been selected from the Museum's film archive by Adrienne Mancia, Associate Curator, and Larry Kardish, Assistant Curator, Department of Film. John Ford directed more than 130 feature films between 1917 and 1966. He won four Academy Awards for best direction and was honored four times by the New York Film Critics. His credits include "The Iron Horse," "The Lost Patrol," "The Informer," "Stagecoach," "The Grapes of Wrath," "The Long Voyage Home," "My Darling Clementine," "How Green Was My Valley," "Rio Grande," "Mogambo," "Mister Roberts," and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence." Among the actors and actresses in "John Ford's Stock Company" were Maureen O'Hara, Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell, Ward Bond, George O'Brien, Anna Lee, Mae Marsh, and a young stunt man named Michael Morrison whom Ford later renamed John Wayne. The Museum's program focuses on Ford's early films, particularly those made for William Fox, which the Museum has preserved by arrangement with 20th Century- Fox. These include his first feature, "Straight Shooting" (1917) and his first Fox picture, "Just Pals" (1920), both films signed "Jack Ford." Also to be shown are "Cameo Kirby" (1923), the first film signed "John Ford"; "Four Sons" (1928), a story of mother love told against the background of World War I; "Up the River" (1930), with Humphrey Bogart and Spencer Tracy at the beginning of their careers. Later, better-known films on the program are "The Informer," his first Oscar winner; "Wee Willie Winkie," with Shirley Temple; and three Will Rogers pictures, "Steamboat Round the Bend"; "Judge Priest"; and "Doctor Bull." Thus (MORE) NO. 68 Page 2 the series traces Ford's development from a 23-year-old just off D. W. Griffith's set (he rode with the Klan in "The Birth of a Nation") to an Academy Award winning talent. John Ford died on August 31, 1973, five months after receiving the American Film Institute's first Life Achievement Award. He was 79. The Department of Film wishes to thank Marvin Zeman for his work on the program notes for the Ford series. The schedule follows; silent films are in dicated with an asterisk. • From Glory to Destruction: John Huston's Non-Fictional Depictions of War
RSA Journal 13 5 FEDERICO SINISCALCO From Glory to Destruction: John Huston's Non-fictional Depictions of War During the second World War John Huston became involved, together with other famous Hollywood filmmakers, in the U.S. Government propa ganda film production. This paper argues that whereas Report from the Aleutians, Huston's first war documentary, may be incorporated within the propaganda genre, and depicts war as an instance where men may aspire to glory, his second non-fiction film, San Pietro, breaks free of this label and takes a clear, autonomous stand on the ultimate tragedy of war, and on the destruction which it brings about. John Huston established his reputation as an important Hollywood personality in 1941 following his debut as a film director with the now clas sic Maltese Falcon. The following year, as the United States became more engaged in the world conflict, he joined the Signal Corps, a body ofthe U.S. Army specialized in film and photographic documentation ofwar. In his au tobiography, written several years later, Huston admitted that he did not pay much attention to the enlisting papers given to him by his friend Sy Bartlett. Therefore, when the call came from the Army to report to duty he was rather surprised (Huston 111-2). At the time Huston was a 37-year old man with a promising career in front of him. Busily working on his next film, Across the Pacific, a sequel of sorts to the successful Maltese Falcon, the prospect of direct involvement in the war must have seemed quite foreign to him.

This lesson remains for future generations. My father, of Spanish Sephardic origin, helped me so much, encouraging me in every intellectual pursuit. INFORMATION TO USERS This dissertation was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.
