Academy Announces 2020 Grant Recipients MEDIA CONTACT [email protected] May 12, 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ACADEMY ANNOUNCES 2020 GRANT RECIPIENTS LOS ANGELES, CA – The Academy Foundation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today the 96 recipients of its 2020 FilmCraft and FilmWatch grants, including recipients of the emergency grant funds announced last month in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. All of the grants, which total a combined $2.5 million in funds, are awarded based on current need to organizations that support filmmakers and reach audiences from underserved communities. “The Academy’s first priority remains to help those in our film community most impacted by the current global crisis. Our contribution of $2 million in emergency funds to the Academy Foundation, along with the grants we bestow on an annual basis, will surely benefit struggling organizations so they may continue to encourage diverse storytelling and enrich cinema and its artists,” said Academy governor and Education Committee chair Nancy Utley. “The Academy’s Grants committee is honored to continue to provide much-needed support to these 96 worthy organizations – their impact on the world of film is truly immeasurable,” said Marcus Hu, chair of the Grants committee. The Academy Grants program provides financial support to qualifying film festivals, educational institutions and film scholars and has awarded more than $15 million since 1968. ### ABOUT THE ACADEMY The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a global community of more than 9,000 of the most accomplished artists, filmmakers and executives working in film. In addition to celebrating and recognizing excellence in filmmaking through the Oscars, the Academy supports a wide range of initiatives to promote the art and science of the movies, including public programming, educational outreach and the upcoming Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which is under construction in Los Angeles. I would like to start with a couple of statistics: We all know that Hollywood films dominate the world’s movie theaters, but there are thousands of other movies made around the globe that most of us are totally unaware of or marginally familiar with. India is the largest film producing nation in the world, whose films we label “Bollywood”. India produces around 1,500 to 2,000 films every year in more than 20 languages. Their primary audience is the poor who want to escape into this imaginary world of pretty people, music and dancing. Amitabh Bachchan is widely regarded as the most famous actor in the world, and one of the greatest and most influential actors in world cinema as well as Indian cinema. He has starred in at least 190 movies. He is a producer, television host, and former politician. He is also the host of India’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Nigeria is the next largest film producing country and is also known as “Nollywood”, producing almost 1000 films per year. That’s almost 20 films per week. The average Nollywood movie is produced in a span of 7-10 days on a budget of less than $20,000. Next comes Hollywood. Last year, 786 films were released in U.S.

    BEYOND INCLUSION The Critical Role of People of Color in the U.S. Documentary Ecosystem Sahar Driver, PhD PUBLISHED BY THE FORD FOUNDATION, SEPTEMBER 2020 Dear Colleagues, Thank you for taking the time to read this report and deep appreciation to Sahar Driver for her fantastic research and analysis. This report was commissioned in late 2019 to inform JustFilms’ grantmaking strategies that support US POC-led and serving organizations as new centers of gravity and influence in the field. This work is grounded in Ford’s Creativity and Free Expression division and is at the core of our work as a social justice documentary funder - to support the cultural power and voice of marginalized communities as building blocks for greater social, economic and political power. As we begin to share this report in the fall of 2020, the reality we operate in has changed. The COVID pandemic and police killing of George Floyd have brought even sharper focus to the systemic inequalities which ravage Black, Brown and disabled communities and have made them even more vulnerable to economic recession. Economic rules that favor the wealthy, unequal access to government, persistent prejudice and discrimination, entrenched cultural narratives and a weakened public sector have worked in tandem to create a deeply divided society. For more than sixty years Ford Foundation has made significant investments in film and documentary to address these drivers of inequality. Shifting culture and narrative is foundational to broader change. Our work has included creating and strengthening the public media infrastructure, supporting media arts centers, public television labs and film institutes, funding documentary content for the public good and strengthening a global network of documentary practitioners.
