SESM) Program! We Look Forward to Meeting You During Our First Class on Sept July 2016 Dear Students: Welcome to the Sports and Entertainment Sales and Marketing (SESM) program! We look forward to meeting you during our first class on Sept. 6 at 9 am in Rm. P17A (Pioneer Building). The morning session will give us a chance to get to know one another and in the afternoon you will begin your first class in Sports Communications and Media. A free College-wide lunch is scheduled to take place on Sept. 6 at the Rugby Field; we encourage you to attend this event. As a student of this program, you will gain insight into the sports and entertainment industry. The program will cover sports and entertainment marketing, the culture of sports, event planning, the role of the media and media as a marketing tool in sports, sponsorship, the role of non-profit in sports, and various role-play strategies for selling sponsorship/ticketing and other in-arena properties. The program will be taught by faculty with experience working with the OHL, CHL, NHL, Hockey Canada and NASCAR. You will receive first-hand knowledge of why sales and marketing is so crucial to the world of sports and entertainment. Sport is a business and the best way to enter into a career in sports and entertainment is through sales and marketing. In October, our class will visit Disney World in Orlando, Florida to participate in two certificate programs as well as take in all the resort has to offer. This trip has proven to be a very useful piece to our students’ portfolios. The trip will take place from Oct. 3–6. The consumable fee you pay covers the airfare, hotel in the Disney Resort, bus transportation to and from the College, the Disney Certificate course fees and the Disney Park passes. Disney is also home to ESPN, so there are plenty of entertainment options available. The only additional cost you will incur is for food and spending money. Students are required to have a valid passport (and no criminal record to cross the border). Two copies of your passport are required for the first week of classes. The Disney trip is part of the Sports and Entertainment curriculum, found in the Marketing and Sponsorship course. IMPORTANT: Payment for the Disney trip will made at the time of your tuition payment, but please be sure to specify at the Cash Office that the $1,250 plus HST goes to the SESM SPEC account (revenue goes to 1154 3945 and HST accounts). The Cash Office has a form for this part of your payment. The SESM program has no fees for books (content is provided), so please be aware that the trip fee is your supplies expense. The class will have the opportunity to take in a professional sporting event (Ottawa Senators, NHL) and a professional development session with the business staff of the Senators. As our program works through the fall months, students will complete job shadowing within the industry and look for a four-month placement opportunity with professional sports and entertainment companies. Your possibilities are unlimited, but you will be responsible for researching where you would like to complete your placement (NHL, OHL, CFL, Olympic Committee, NBA, NFL, MLB and many others). Placements will run from January to mid-April and students will be in charge of completing a major project during this time. Students will detail their project in a capstone project report and a professional portfolio will be submitted at the end of April to complete the requirements of the program. I can tell you that past students of the Sports and Entertainment Sales and Marketing program are working in great positions in the industry and most of the time directly out of their placements. Our students are working with names like the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL), Toronto Blue Jays Organization, Ottawa Senators (NHL), Peterborough Petes (OHL), London Knights (OHL), Hamilton Ticats (CFL), Toronto Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (NHL/ NBA/ MLS/ CFL), Toronto Rock (NLL), Rugby Canada, Colgate University and many others. You are entering an exciting opportunity and I look forward to meeting you in September. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Kim Grimes, BSc., BA.
