This is true in other smaller developing nations but not the case in mature forestry markets where dedicated machine suppliers generally have exceptional support set-ups. “Excavator parts are commodities that are not only used in forestry but also in construction so it’s easier and cheaper,” he said. There is one other very important reason that is specific to the choice of harvester head – the stability of the tracked machines. The SP 591 LX head is too heavy to be effectively manoeuvred

Anxious times for Uruguay Ritrok is one of the “lucky” (read: efficient) ones to still be successfully logging in Uruguay. The company is one of two loggers in the country that haven’t had to stop for at least a short period because of the drop in demand, according to Brizzio. Some of the companies that stopped operations have started again – others haven’t. He said 60% of contractors had stopped operating and of the remaining 40%, half were working at a reduced capacity to lower operating costs. Brizzio did not expect business to pick up again until the third quarter of this year at which point he believes several operations that have been on hold will come back to life as international markets, principally Uruguay’s largest chip market, Japan, begin to breathe more steadily. However he said volumes that contractors had previously become used to would not return before this time next year. Brizzio said the affects of the global economic crisis hadn’t yet reached Uruguay in their full capacity and he predicted things may get worse as the results trickle down. This is worrying for a nation that has very few significant exports and had been enjoying the benefits of its successfully developed forestry sector. “There is no doubt there is a benefit for the country when the forestry industry is working and the drop-off in activity will be felt by everybody, not just those in the industry,” he said. “Forestry was still growing at a great rate up until recently. “When you go to the countryside you can see easily how much influence the forestry sector has had – there is a lot of movement with trucks, people and machines that the country was not used to – and the people are happy. Forest machines often work in a fire hazardous environment and any fire can be devasting because there is often large amounts of diesel and hydraulic oil in the immediate vicinity likely to ignite causing a fire to spread rapidly.

Not only is there a direct danger to employees but often forest machines operate in shifts making it difficult to replace them quickly.

BIOMASS Premium chipper sets the standard for Elmia A mobile high-performance chipper with 700 hp has been built onto a four-axle-lorry by Austrian-German specialist, Komptech. The feeder with horizontal and vertical rollers as well as optional material discharge with conveyor belt guarantees an exceptional product quality, according to the manufacturer

The large rotor diameter of 1.05 m makes an inlet opening of 0.75 m x 1 m possible. If this is not adequate, the fold-out wood splitter mounted on the lorry is called into play. “With all of these features, the Chippo 7000 direct is a compact general-purpose talent that is hard to beat in terms of mobility, working comfort and cost-effectiveness,” the supplier says. omptech, a specialist in the treatment of solid waste and biomass, will be Kshowcasing its new general-purpose Chippo 7000 at Elmia Wood, which can deliver throughput of 300 m3/h even with strong wood trunks. With the bioenergy and biomass sector gaining in momentum all the time, the competition between equipment manufacturers is on the up and shows no signs of slowing down. Elmia will be one of the biggest showcases for biomass equipment in recent years and should reflect the state of the market. Komptech and other suppliers will be doing all that they can to push the merits of their latest equipment and the Chippo 7000 is expected to play a paramount role in Komptech’s campaign. The feed system with horizontal and vertical rollers enables a uniform feed and “even loose shrubbery is seized reliably and fed to the chipper rotor pre-compressed”. Lightweight material is chipped with high drum speed and together with the immediate-action, load- dependent feed controller, considerably higher throughputs can be attained compared to hackers of similar design. Lower speed gearing with more torque can be easily adjusted for chipping wood trunks and a conveyor belt discharge system is optional. This discharge version guarantees homogenous, pelletised wood chippings and at

he overall trend for cut-to-length (CTL) logging is of an increasing application Tacross the world. In regions where CTL was born and has always dominated – mainly Scandinavia but also Western Europe – its application remains strong, but it is in the tree- length (TL) stronghold of North America where the most interesting developments have been taking place. As Nate Burton from Komatsu Forest’s North American base eluded to in International Forest Industries April edition (pp 27-34), TL harvesting is starting to lose its grip on the industry in that part of the world. It’s not a fast moving trend but it is measurable and undeniable. Burton’s European colleague Roland Lundqvist agreed, saying there was a clear trend in the global forestry industry for the increased use of CTL harvesting including in North America where a both methods were used in parallel. He said CTL was particularly pronounced in Europe, South America, Australia, and Southeast Asia. When reviewing the technology CTL machine manufacturers were focusing on, IFI expected to find an even greater push on fuel efficiency and other cost saving advances in light of economic conditions. This was not the case. While suppliers were still working on fuel efficiencies and green technologies, the overwhelming push from research and development groups was on operator comfort. It would appear that contractors are realising more so than ever before that a comfortable and happy operator is a productive operator and have demanded assistance from manufacturers. This move may also be an attempt to attract more young people to the harvesting sector, who at the moment may be put off by long, lonely hours in an uncomfortable machine cab. class and with its lighter bunks has a lower The other surprising development was a return overall weight. Getting a head start Log Max has been designing and manufacturing forest equipment since it was established in 1980 and throughout the years the company has grown to be one of the world’s leading manufacturers of harvesting heads. “The reliability of our products has us a good reputation world wide and the word Log Max is associated with high quality,” Jesper Löfgren from Log Max said. “One of the big advantages with Log Max is the fact that it’s possible to mount our harvesting heads on almost every carrier on the market, rubber-tired as well as tracked machines. “No matter if it’s a Komatsu, Eco Log, Ponsse, John Deere or Rottne, Log Max will work with the built in control system as usual.” The interest in bioenergy has grown rapidly over the past year, especially in Scandinavia. Log Max has dedicated considerable energy to this sector and has made serious inroads with its Accumulation Kit, developed several years ago, which has sold more than 100 units. “With an Accumulation Kit, which of course can be mounted afterwards on almost all our head models, you get a much higher flexibility in your forest operations,” Löfgren explained. “You can process the trees as usual, one by one, or you can choose to do multi-stemming. This way you can harvest either bioenergy, pulp-wood or saw logs, all by the same harvester, all with the same harvesting head.” International Forest Industries will be publishing our complete harvester head feature in August.

IFI: What is the single greatest issue for harvesting contractors, harvesting equipment suppliers and forest owners today? JM: For harvesting contractors globally the biggest challenge is the shortage of good labour. Harvesting contractors do not typically get paid based on hours but based on the volume and quality of production. The more sophisticated the machines and the more demanding the log specifications the greater the role played by operators. Based on comparison tests in similar conditions, the productivity between the best and worst operator varies +/- 30% from the average. Speed alone anyhow does not mean success – it needs to be combined with continuity. Machines need to keep producing day after day without any major downtime. Simple math comparing 130% productivity combined with 80% machine utilisation to 70% productivity with 65% utilisation clearly tells who is Mechanisation is probably the biggest change to affect the harvesting still going to be in business next year. industry in 60 years

For the equipment supplier the issue originates from the required breadth of product offerings versus the low volume of specific models. Distributors may have 10 different product families each including several models. They may even be different brands and represent entirely different levels of technology. The assumption is still that distributors will have professional sales people who can sell the right product to the customer; qualified operator and mechanic trainers for all the models; competent customer support to solve machine issues ASAP; and cover enough spare parts inventory to keep all those different machines going. Additional problems arise from proximity – forests tend to be away from populated areas so to build a branch network that can cover such distances takes a lot of investment capital. The issue for the forest owners is the tough one. Globally there are so many different types

Mechanised harvesting and the technologies that go along with haulage and wood handling machines today are expensive under takings – almost certainly too expensive for young forestry professionals keen to make a start in the industry. What remains of forest industries after this downturn will represent a more powerful, consolidated and experienced base of companies that new ventures will find very difficult to successfully penetrate given the upfront capital required. This is probably an accurate reflection of the situation that will emerge in most developed nations worldwide. “I just can’t see anyone coming into our industry in the future,” Blackberry said. “We’ve got A$30 million of equipment here – who’s going to be able to come in and support that? “We’re not bringing young people through – as A Waratah head in action at a pine plantation

NOVEMBER 10 - 14 Agritechnica 2009 defies global economic downturn World’s biggest agricultural machinery exhibition including Forestry & Biomass, Hannover Agritechnica, the world’s leading trade fair for agricultural machinery, takes place in November and, judging by the number of registrations received so far, looks set to defy the global economic downturn. Bookings are at the same high level as for the record- breaking event two years ago, and the DLG (Deutsch Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft - German Agricultural Society), the organiser of the event, expects around 2,000 manufacturers of tractors, agricultural machinery and equipment from Germany and abroad to attend. According to the managing director of the DLG’s exhibitions department, Dr Jochen Köckler, all the global manufacturers of agricultural equipment have already registered and are planning to take large stands at the Agritechnica market place. So far, around 180 new exhibitors have also registered. Dr Köckler sees this as confirmation of the widespread view that the prospects for agribusiness are good, thanks to the anticipated worldwide increase in demand for food and for biomass from agricultural commodities. http://www.agritechnica.com/828.0.html
