The time span of the period is uncertain. Philological and linguistic evidence indicates that the Rigveda, the oldest of the Vedas, was com- posed roughly between 1700 and 1100 BCE, also referred to as the early Vedic period. The end of the period is commonly estimated to have occurred about 500 BCE, and 150 BCE has been suggested as a terminus ante quem for all Vedic Sanskrit literature. Transmission of texts in the Vedic period was by oral tradition alone, and a literary tradition set in only in post-Vedic times. Despite the difficulties in dating the period, the Vedas can safely be assumed to be several thousands of years old. The associated culture, sometimes referred to as Vedic civilization, was probably centred early on in the northern and northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent, but has now spread and constitutes the basis of contemporary Indian culture. Behera and B. C. Choudhary 2 MINISTER’S FOREWORD I am pleased to introduce the Conservation Action Plan for the Ganges river dolphin (Platanista gangetica gangetica) in the Ganga river basin. The Gangetic Dolphin is one of the last three surviving river dolphin species and we have declared it India's National Aquatic Animal. Its conservation is crucial to the welfare of the Ganga river ecosystem. Just as the Tiger represents the health of the forest and the Snow Leopard represents the health of the mountainous regions, the presence of the Dolphin in a river system signals its good health and biodiversity. This Plan has several important features that will ensure the existence of healthy populations of the Gangetic dolphin in the Ganga river system. First, this action plan proposes a set of detailed surveys to assess the population of the dolphin and the threats it faces. Second, immediate actions for dolphin conservation, such as the creation of protected areas and the restoration of degraded ecosystems, are detailed. Third, community involvement and the mitigation of human-dolphin conflict are proposed as methods that will ensure the long-term survival of the dolphin in the rivers of India. He is born out of the heavens, in the solar fire. He is born of the celestial waters and brought forth in the winds, the rains, and the lightning. He is born of two mothers, the drill and board, with ten maids attending the birth. He is born, and dies, and is reborn again. Agni was a handsome young priest, a hotar, newly ordained as minister of all sacrifice. He was to succeed his elder brothers, each of whom served before as hotar, each of whom died in that service. The gods waited eagerly for the bounty of offerings their priest would bring, offerings from Manu, first human, representative of all humankind. But the offerings never came. The sacrifices were not made. Agni, promising young priest, had disappeared. Like us, without Agni, the gods cannot eat and grow weak. Hungry, angry, and afraid, the gods rode forth, after learning of their priest’s absence. Indra the Thundering King, Varuna the Lawgiver, and Yama the Judge rode at their head, best skilled to seek out the missing priest. They sought him out, but Agni was well hidden. Knowing the fate of his brothers before, fearing his own inevitable death, Agni fled far and hid deep. First he hid in the darkness of the skies, but Matarisvan the lightning sensed Agni and revealed him to Indra. Agni ran flashing to the earth. -

The River Ganges Where is it? • The river Ganges starts high up in the Himalayan mountains and flows through the northern part of India and into the Bay of Bengal. How big is it? • The river is 2,510 km long from its source to the sea. • Its average depth is about 16m, but at its deepest it is 30m deep. • At its widest it is 350km. Why is it special? The river Ganges is special for two main reasons. •Firstly because it provides India with an important and much needed water. •Secondly, the river plays an important part in the believes and everyday life of the Hindu population in India The river in daily life • The land around the river and water from the river itself is used for farming. • There are lots of industries along the river that use it for power and cleaning. • Ordinary people who live by the river use it to bathe in, wash their clothes in and for drinking water. Over 10 million people bathe in the river every day. River Ganga The River Ganga runs through the holy city of Varanasi in India • Hindu legend has it that the Goddess Ganga had the power to purify anything that touched her and she flowed from the heavens and purified the people of India. Hindu’s belief that bathing in the river Ganga purifies them and their sins are forgiven. Pelto [email protected] Received and published: 24 May 2010 Alford and Armstrong (2010) and associated responses contend that it was the conven- tional wisdom that Himalayan glaciers would disappear by 2035 that prompted them to write this paper. Not one of the 30 papers on Himalayan glaciers referenced in my first Full Screen / Esc comment mentioned this date, so it is not conventional wisdom. They further note that conventional wisdom indicates that major rivers fed by these glaciers would become Printer-friendly Version intermittent. Again, not one of the 30 papers referenced many, with detailed hydrologic models and/or specific Himalayan runoff records, arrived at this conclusion. Alford Interactive Discussion and Armstrong (2010) main purpose seems to be dismantling this incorrect version of Discussion Paper conventional wisdom. As noted in the previous comments by Pelto (1010) and Shea (2010) the authors have C263 ignored almost all of the detailed hydrologic research in the region. The paper is on Nepal Himalaya glacier runoff; and there is limited data and published material on TCD runoff from these glaciers. However, there is considerable information from the ad- 4, C263–C272, 2010 jacent areas of the Himalaya in India that must be consulted if a serious attempt at accurately modeling glacier runoff is made, including many feeding the same water- shed the Ganges River. -

Mycosphere 4(3), 567–582, Doi 10.5943/mycosphere/4/3/10 Abstract In this study 30 widely distributed plant species from the Western Ghat forest in Goa were randomly selected and were studied with regard to their fungal association as endophytes and litter colonizers. This effort resulted in the recovery of more than 6500 isolates of microfungi which were assignable to 675 species of fungi belonging to 275 genera which included properly recognized Mucorales(1), Ascomycetes (18), Hyphomycetous asexual fungi (289), Coelomycetous asexual fungi (22) and undetermined taxa (77), besides a sizable number of non-sporulating forms (268). Species of endophytes (53) and litter colonizers (77) were selected for enzyme studies. Ten taxa occurred both as endophytes and litter colonizers. Endophytes and litter colonizers showed different enzyme profiles indicating that habit and habitat dictated enzyme activity. Several recovered fungi were new to science and some have already been described as new species and are elaborated here in this paper. -

Vedic Brahmanism and Its Offshoots Buddhism (Buddha) Followed by Hindūism (Kṛṣṇā) The religion of the Vedic period (also known as Vedism or Vedic Brahmanism or, in a context of Indian antiquity, simply Brahmanism[1]) is a historical predecessor of Hinduism.[2] Its liturgy is reflected in the Mantra portion of the four Vedas, which are compiled in Sanskrit. The religious practices centered on a clergy administering rites that often involved sacrifices. This mode of worship is largely unchanged today within Hinduism; however, only a small fraction of conservative Shrautins continue the tradition of oral recitation of hymns learned solely through the oral tradition. Texts dating to the Vedic period, composed in Vedic Sanskrit, are mainly the four Vedic Samhitas, but the Brahmanas, Aranyakas and some of the older Upanishads (Bṛhadāraṇyaka, Chāndogya, Jaiminiya Upanishad Brahmana) are also placed in this period. The Vedas record the liturgy connected with the rituals and sacrifices performed by the 16 or 17 shrauta priests and the purohitas. According to traditional views, the hymns of the Rigveda and other Vedic hymns were divinely revealed to the rishis, who were considered to be seers or "hearers" (shruti means "what is heard") of the Veda, rather than "authors". In addition the Vedas are said to be "apaurashaya", a Sanskrit word meaning uncreated by man and which further reveals their eternal non-changing status. The mode of worship was worship of the elements like fire and rivers, worship of heroic gods like Indra, chanting of hymns and performance of sacrifices. The priests performed the solemn rituals for the noblemen (Kshsatriya) and some wealthy Vaishyas.
