CIRA has made this resource available so that leaders can get children playing on the rainy, hot, humid, and snowy days. A timely resource as inclement weather appears to be occurring more and more. Take a look at the table of contents below and you will find that this resource is organized so that leaders can find activities specific to different locations and weather A rainy day like today is a perfect example of why you need to check out CIRA's latest resource : 'Eye of the Storm: A Collection of Games for Inclement Weather' . See some sampler games below: • Seven Continents: One example of the great games found in this resource is called: Seven Continents. Taking place in the gymnasium, students have to move from continent (mat) to continent (mat) without being tagged by UN representatives when the teacher calls out "TRAVEL". • Hall Hurdles: Another great activity students will love to do regardless of the weather outside is: Hall Hurdles. Set up some small, soft obstacles in the hall (e.g. mats bent into tents) and students then race heel-to-toe through the hurdle obstacle course! • Balloon Volleyball: Only have classroom space available? This resource has games for that too! Students stay seated passing the balloon in the air across the court to the opponents’ side of the room hoping it lands on the floor in the awesome game: Balloon Volleyball. • Boat Races: If you are looking for an activity to do in the rain, Eye of the Storm has examples of games for that too! Boat Races is where students race boats down a puddle stream to see who’s boat finishes first. A variation of this game is to turn it into a relay, once a person’s boat goes down the stream, the player picks it up and runs it back to his/her team to race the boat again. Kings Court Dodgeball Equipment: lots of gator balls, cones Playing area: gymnasium, outdoor tarmac, playing field King's Court is the most common and widely played of all the dodgeball games and for many it brings back memories or "murderball" from years ago. Teams play to eliminate members of the other team. When a player is hit, they cross over to the other teams end. In most gyms there will be a line to stand behind or you can use cones to establish an end zone. Players who have been hit can re-enter this game and play again for their team when they either pick up a loose ball in the end zone or get a ball tossed to them from a teammate. (Remember to ensure safety, no throwing from behind). It is very unlikely that this game will ever end with a winning team, and that's a good thing! Note: Many other dodgeball games are built on this game's structure. Dr. Dodgeball Equipment: lots of gator balls Playing area: Gymnasium, outdoor tarmac, playing field This is another favourite with a lot of classes and involves teamwork and communication. Tow teams take their positions on their sides of the gym or playing area. The teams quietly select one player to be the doctor and the game begins. Once a player is hit they sit or lie on the floor exactly where they were hit, as they are temporarily out of the game. Be sure to stress safety with this format. The doctor's role is to bring the player back to "life" and to re-enter the game. There are a number of variations for this strategy. One popular way is to have the doctor rapidly lift the player's feet up and down to simulate pumping life back into them. Another involves the doctor tagging the injured player, or taking them to a mat in the corner of they gym, which might represent a hospital. Hit players can also be transported on scooter boards to the hospital. Once they have been revived they re-enter the game. In Doctor Dodgeball, there may be a winning team. A Team may win by eliminating all the players or by hitting the doctor. Teachers may devise variations on this aspect of the game. What is unique to this game is that you will see a number of players protecting the doctor or pretending to be the doctor, particularly when the doctor needs to pump life into the eliminated players. Deception is a key element to the success of many winning teams. Check out "Doctor Dodgeball" from "World's Greatest Dodgeball Games" below!
