The Closing Ceremony of the Eleventh World Games on July 25, 2021 will include live enter- tainment as athletes, fans and volunteers bid farewell. A World Games Countdown Clock for Bir- mingham is located on the Red Mountain Expressway overpass. The International World Games Association was founded in 1981. The IWGA is made up of 37 Inter- national Sports Federations Members and is recognized by The International Olympic Committee (IOC). Through 2017, the nations with the most World Game medals are, in order, Italy, Germany, USA, Russia and France. Former World Games sports now in the Olympic Games include badmin- ton, beach volleyball, trampolining, rugby sevens, taekwondo, triathlon and women’s weightlifting. The World Games will have a projected economic impact of $256,000,000. In November 2019, more than 40 educators from throughout the state participated in a two-day workshop to brainstorm ways to bring The World Games 2021 into kindergarten through 8th grade classrooms across Alabama through the “Live Healthy, Play Global” initiative. The 2021 Games will be incorporated into history, civics and physical education classes across Alabama. The Birming- ham Organizing Committee felt it was important to offer students ways to learn about different cul- tures in their home state. The World Games 2021 Vice President of Community Engagement Kathy Boswell said the wheels are already in motion to take what was learned from the event and get it into classroom curriculums. The World Games involves modern, popular and exciting sports that many of us do not have a chance to witness live or on television. In nearly every sport, Birmingham will host the top athletes in the world. We hosted the Argentina-USA soccer game as part of the Atlanta Olympics, but Bir- mingham has never been the focus of the entire world in 33 different sports. Sponsoring governments are the City of Birmingham, Jefferson County, State of Alabama and the Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau. On Dec. 4, 2019, Chairman Jonathan Porter announced the appointment of Nick Sellers as CEO of The World Games 2021. Corporate sponsors include Alabama Power, BlueCross & BlueShield of Alabama, Protective Life, Regions Bank and Shipt. Some 10 Partners have been named, to include event management, sports-related and ac- counting concerns. While the final list of venues has not been determined, events will take place at the following con- firmed sports venues: The BJCC, UAB – including Bartow Arena and BBVA Stadium, Barber Motor- sports Park and Museum, Oak Mountain State Park, Sloss Furnaces and Birmingham Southern Col- lege. Those wishing to volunteer can access the website of The World Games 2021 @ https:// theworldgames2021.com. Prayer by Jon Lewis ((by request of many of you) Let us Pray: For people who are blind and cannot see, and for those who can see but are blind to the people around them. For people who move slowly because of accident, illness or disability, and for those who move too fast to be sensitive to the world in which they live. For people who are deaf and cannot hear, and those who can hear but who ignore the cries of others. For people who learn slowly, for people who learn in different ways, and for people who learn quickly but too often fail to act wisely. For people who have chronic illnesses for which there is no known cure or relief, and for those who live fearfully of being ill. For people who feel isolated by their disabilities, and for people who contribute to that sense of isolation. May we learn to respect each other and learn to live together in dignity and in peace. Amen. February 10, 2020 Volume 55, Issue 28 Page 3 Chaplain, Pledge, 4-Way Test Sergeant - at - Arms This Week: A.J.
