Email: [email protected] Phone: +234(0)8026212686 Abstract This study reviews the effects of parasites of fresh water fish hosts. Like other living organisms, fish harbour parasites either external or internal which cause a host of pathological debilities in them. The parasites live in close obligate association and derive benefits such as nutrition at the host’s expense, usually without killing the host. They utililize energy otherwise available for the hosts growth, sustenance, development, establishment and reproduction and as such may harm their hosts in a number of ways and affect fish production. The common parasites of fishes include the unicellular microparasites (viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoans). The protozoans i.e. microsporidians and mixozoans are considered in this review. The multicellular macroparasites mainly comprised of the helminthes and arthropods are also highlighted. The effects of parasites on their fish hosts maybe exacerbated by different pollutants including heavy metals and hydrocarbons, organic enrichment of sediments by domestic sewage and others such as parasite life cycles and fish population size. Abstract This study reports the presence of Enterogyrus cichlidarum Paperna, 1963 (Monogenoidea: Ancyrocephalidae) in the stomach of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus, 1758, cultured in the State of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil. A total of 98 fish originating from a fish pond culture in Joinville, South Brazil, were examined. The fish were collected in the winter of 2007, in the summer, autumn, winter and spring of 2008. After anesthetized and sacrificed in a benzocaine solution, their stomachs were removed, bathed in 55°C water, fixed in 5% formalin for quantification and attainment of the prevalence rate, mean intensity, mean abundance and mounted in Hoyer's. Prevalence rate throughout the period was 94%. The greatest mean intensities occurred in August 2008 and November 2008, followed by July 2007, January and May 2008. The great majority of Monogenoidea are branchial and cutaneous ectoparasites, however reports of its invasion in the internal organs are rare. -

Zoosystema 39 (4): 501-598. https://doi.org/10.5252/z2017n4a5 ABSTRACT 313 nominal species of monogenean parasites of aquatic vertebrates occurring in Mexico are included in this checklist; in addition, records of 54 undetermined taxa are also listed. All the monogeneans registered are associated with 363 vertebrate host taxa, and distributed in 498 localities pertaining to 29 of the 32 states of the Mexican Republic. Th e checklist contains updated information on their hosts, habitat, and distributional records. We revise the species list according to current schemes of KEY WORDS classifi cation for the group. Th e checklist also included the published records in the last 11 years, Platyhelminthes, Mexico, since the latest list was made in 2006. We also included taxon mentioned in thesis and informal distribution, literature. As a result of our review, numerous records presented in the list published in 2006 were Actinopterygii, modifi ed since inaccuracies and incomplete data were identifi ed. Even though the inventory of the Elasmobranchii, Anura, monogenean fauna occurring in Mexican vertebrates is far from complete, the data contained in our Testudines.
