    Remembering saint-like priest How does St. Aloysius Schwartz sound to you? Who, you may ask, is Aloysius Schwartz? Monsignor Aloysius Schwartz walked among us. While he was born in Washington in 1930, he went St. Charles College (now Charlestown) in 1944 as a freshman in the minor seminary high school. His illustrious classmates include Bishop Joe Gossman and Dr. Mike Eder, a famed educator. From an early age, Al felt called to the missions. He studied at Maryknoll College and completed his theology in Louvain, Begium. His sister, Dolores Vita, a parishioner at St. John Neumann Mission in Annapolis, told me that Maryknoll wanted him to teach, but Al wanted to go to the missions. So he was actually ordained as a diocesan priest on June 29, 1957, and was assigned in Busan, South Korea. In the seminary, at Louvain, Al would spend his summer vacations working at the rag pickers’ camps for derelicts of French society. Al visited Banneux, where the Virgin of the Poor appeared, and dedicated his priesthood to the service of the poor. The law of attraction surely worked for Father Al. His love for the poor brought the poor to his door. Orphans would show up at his rectory. Realizing he needed support in caring for the poor, he founded the Religious Congregation of the Sisters of Mary in 1964, and the Brothers of Christ in 1981. He established Boystowns and Girlstowns to care for and educate the orphan and abandoned children, and children from poor families. Father Al was involved in pro-life activities of every kind, building hospitals and sanatoriums for the indigent, hospices for the homeless and handicapped men, women and children.

Not practicing what you profess is therefore hypocrisy, a betrayal of the Christian duty to be “salt of the earth” and “light of the world”. Paul was the one who reminded the Church in Corinth: “You show that you are a letter from Christ . written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts” (2 Cor 3:3). Christians themselves, not the things they say, are Christ’s “letters of recommendation” (2 Cor 3:2) to the world. Henry Dear Parishioners, We have all heard about Families of Parishes at different times. The concept of Families of Parishes is designed to share available resources among neighboring parishes. Our family will consist of St. Mary, St. John the Baptist, St. Michael, St. Anne, and St. Charles in Newport. In the ‘Family’ the clergy, staff and those who serve in leadership positions will collaborate in a more deliberate way to serve all the faithful. I know change is sometimes hard to accept and the past year and half we have seen many changes due to different circumstance beyond our control. If we look at the history of the church, we see changes have been made to accommodate different evolving needs of the church. The changes are made especially to grow in its missionary and evangelizing efforts. The Archdiocese has discerned that the Local Church of Detroit must grow in its missionary nature. In order to best to accomplish this task and to take care of the needs of the faithful, the Archdiocese is embarking on this great adventure called Families of Parishes. The international meeting was first conceived by Saint Pope John Paul II in 1992 to look at strengthening the sa- cred bonds of the family unit across the globe.
