Welcome to delegates 1.1 Professor Sir David Eastwood welcomed all delegates to this business meeting of the Universitas 21 network, and outlined the main issues for discussion and for approval by members. A particular welcome was extended to those attending their first U21 AGM including Presidents, Professor Aiji Tanaka (Waseda), Professor Xiang Zhang (HKU) and Provost Ralph Hexter who was representing UC Davis on behalf of Chancellor Gary May. 1.2 As the U21 LBG AGM would record apologies/attendance from Presidents, Professor Sir David Eastwood did not formally run through attendance at this point. 1.3 Professor Sir David Eastwood thanked Dr Wallace Loh and his team of staff at the University of Maryland for their time and many contributions, and for providing a rich and rewarding experience for all. 2. Minutes of the last Annual Network meeting held at the University of Melbourne on 11 May 2018 2.1 Received: Paper 6.2 2.2 The minutes of the last Annual Network Meeting, held at the University of Melbourne on 11 May 2018, were APPROVED without amendments. 3. Provost’s Report 3.1 Received: Paper 6.3 3.2 Professor Redmond’s update began with a short video (https://vimeo.com/332465530) focusing on U21’s impact within the network throughout the year. Professor Redmond outlined her work programme over the past year and the impact of key projects. She highlighted significant initiatives currently under development: • Aspects of her role, such as balancing the work of the U21 Secretariat, scoping of opportunities for members (based on each institution’s strategic plan), maintaining close communications with U21 Senior Leaders and Officers and the Executive Committee. Also, balancing what the membership wants and what we could do better set against a changing education landscape; • Fostering new bi- and tri-lateral arrangements within the network (including two new bi-lateral arrangements signed at the AGM); • Embedding the new U21 website; • The introduction of Microsoft 365 and U21’s desire to increase the engagement and involvement of members with this online platform; • The planned Customer Relationship Management system which will enhance how the U21 Secretariat works with the network members; • Working with DS3 Group in order to share cross-institutional data to support projects; • The communication of U21 opportunities. It was NOTED that this has been taken on by Rachel Edwards as a special project to increase engagement across the network. The U21 Toolkit for Senior Leaders to use has been developed as part of this project; • Enhancing U21 on an external stage – continuing and refining the collaboration with PwC, as well as furthering connections with the European Parliament and the United Nations. 3.3 Professor Bairbre Redmond extended thanks to members of the U21 Secretariat team, the U21 Chair and members of the Executive Committee, Senior Leaders and U21 Officers, Chairs/members of Cluster Groups and U21 Committees for their contributions and support over the past year. U21’s Impact Research Project into Student Learning and Employability Gains 4.1 Professor Bairbre Redmond and Ms Caroline Hetherington provided an update on the initial findings and outcomes of the Student Experience Cluster’s Impact Research Project conducted during 2018/2019. The research explores the impact of student mobility and co-curricular engagement and has been conducted by Dr Avril Brandon, a post-doctoral researcher ([email protected]) employed by U21. Although the study is not yet finished, qualitative feedback has been received from 23 universities and thanks were particularly given to McMaster University and The University of Hong Kong for assisting with this. The project is due to be completed in June 2019. ACTION 1: Members were given the opportunity to ask questions regarding the project and the U21/Avril findings to date. Professor Robin Mason suggested comparing data regarding the mobility Brandon of students in the U21 network against those not in the U21 network. It was AGREED to include this comparison. It was NOTED that a literature review will also be undertaken and that the interim findings ACTION 2: U21 of the research will be circulated to members by Summer 2019. The full findings will be published in a report for U21, as well in an academic journal, in due course. It was NOTED the U21 student experience planning will reflect and be influenced by the findings from the project. 5. Impact during the first year of the Clusters’ 2018 – 2023 programmatic plans as agreed at AGM 2018 5.1 Received: Paper 6.5 5.2 At the AGM 2018, Presidents approved programmatic plans for U21’s three main areas of activity (Educational Innovation, Researcher Engagement and Student Experience), which set the clusters’ strategic direction until 2023. The following Academic Leads offered an overview of their success against the first year of their plans and outlined future developments: Researcher Engagement Cluster: Associate Professor Caroline Daley (University of Auckland) Associate Professor Caroline Daley, who co-Chairs the Researcher Engagement Cluster, provided an overview of the highlights, plans and goals of the Researcher Engagement Cluster: • An outline of who is involved in the Cluster was given; • It was NOTED that the key annual meeting for the Cluster was held at the University of Birmingham in March (Research Leaders and DDoGS) and following the SLM, the Research Collaboration Group are to meet in May at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. Members were encouraged to participate and to take the opportunity to share information, best practice and time with colleagues; ACTION 3: • It was NOTED that the Cluster had yet to target mid-career researchers and to U21: CW counter this a new working group has been formed to progress the idea of a U21 Mid-Career Researcher Programme; • The key theme for the Cluster’s Research Collaboration Group meeting in Santiago in May 2019 would be accessing European funding. Information and training around this subject would be available for those attending; • The Cluster would consider how to continue engaging with others beyond the network, but also how to engage as a Cluster; • The main focus for the Cluster will be on quality of programmed activities and not quantity. Page 3 of 11 Universitas 21 AGM 2019, Maryland Student Experience Cluster: Professor Joanne Wright (The University of Queensland) Professor Joanne Wright drew attention to the three main components of the programmatic plan relating to student experience: • Enhance students’ appreciation of themselves as global citizens; • Adopt a research approach to initiatives; • Share student benefits, best practice
