Many passages, which properly found place in a book intended for general reading, involved expressions of opinion obviously unsuitable for schools. In prepar- ing this school version, our object has accordingly been to omit needless or debatable matter, but to preserve the general outline and all available portions of the original work. To aid us in our task, we submitted the Literary His- tory, chapter by chapter, to an advanced class of students at Harvard College, whom we encouraged to criticise it minutely in writing. The energy and good sense with which they did so have enabled us to correct many slight errors, and, at the same time, have strengthened our conviction that the earlier book was historically sound. Languages grow and live and die in accordance with laws of their own. This English of ours may be taken as typical. Originating from the union and confusion of older tongues, it has struggled through the infantile diseases of dialect, each of which has left some trace, until long ago it not only had become the sole means of expression for millions of people, but also had assumed the form which now makes its literature in some respects the most remark- able of modern times. Whatever else it may be, this Ht- erature is the most spontaneous, the least formal and con- scious, the most instinctively creative, the most free from excess of culture, and so, seemingly, the most normal. Its earliest forms were artless; songs and sayings began to stray from oral tradition into written record, laws were sometimes phrased and chronicles made in the robust young terms which carried meaning to unlearned folk as well as to those versed in more polite tongues, such as French or Latin. Presently came forms of literature which, at least comparatively, were artistic. The earliest of these which has lasted in general literary memory reached its height in the works of Chaucer (about 1340- — 2 Introduction 1400). After his time came a century or more of civil disturbance, when Enghshmen were too busy with wars of the Roses and the hke for further progress in the arts of peace. Then, with the new national integrity which grew under the Tudors, came a stronger literary impulse, un- surpassed in vigorous spontaneity. In 1575 there was hardly such a thing as modern Eng- lish literature; in 1625 that great body of English litera- ture which we call Elizabethan was complete. Fifty years had given us not only incomparable lyric verse and the final version of the Enghsh Bible (161 1), but the works too of Spenser (i 552-1 599), of Shakspere (i 564-1616) and the other great dramatists, of Hooker (i 553-1600), of Ralegh (1552-1618), of Bacon (1561-1626), and of all their fellows.

Carey, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Aside from the various minor issues, there are two major questions that are addressed in this dissertation: (1) Can socially cohesive community be attributed to the local and/or federal levels of the American system in the colonial and founding periods? (2) How has the political centralization of the twentieth century affected socially cohesive community and public policy for “sensitive” issues, which require such cohesion to become settled? The author attempts to answer these questions via articulating and defending the following thesis: Socially cohesive community (i.e., a mode of intrinsically valuable friendship community that can develop around shared thick-level values and that is often associated with political activity and local interaction) was a possibility for local- level communities during the colonial and founding periods of American history; whereas, when the colonies/States were grouped together as an aggregate union, they did not constitute a true nation or single community of individuals. Hence, such “union” lacked a common good (and, a fortiori , it lacked a thick-level common good necessary for social cohesion). Through the course of American history, the political system has been centralized or transformed from a federal system into a de facto unitary system, and this change has undermined the possibility of social cohesion at the local level.

The forty-seven pairs of slave shoes recently arrived from New England were no good. “If I give a first rate price, I must have a first rate article,” Beene chided his Rhode Island supplier in 1842. Only a few years earlier, Beene had begun to purchase brogans from Rowland G. Hazard, whose family firm used plantation-to-plantation sales calls to popularize ready-made slave clothing along the cotton frontier. Beene had followed Hazard’s instructions and provided measurements for each of the slaves on his Cahawba plantation: Guinea Tom’s foot, for example, measured 11¼ inches, George’s 11½, Little 7 5 Lucy’s 9 /8, and Nanny’s 9 /8.     CHAPTER FIVE SPECIALIZATION The opposition between liberal and republican virtue and the associated opposition between liberal and republican visions of citizenship provide the theoretical rationale for looking closely at Porter, Eliot, and Wilson’s liberal proclivities as an area where they may have compromised their commitments to a republican form of civic education. One economic practice which often accompanies the development of liberal ideology and commerce is the spread of specialization, and in this chapter I look at these educator’s reactions to this spread as suggestive indicators of their commitment to republican citizenship. The theoretical foundations to this approach are fortified by the fact that republicans have traditionally been very wary of specialization. This approach needs to be forwarded with some qualification because the development of specialization in late nineteenth-century America is by many accounts a narrative of increased civic activism. For example, as historian Mary Furner has written in Advocacy and Objectivity, in the late 1890's increasing numbers of professionals --who were invariably college alumni-- “became involved in various kinds of civic betterment movements.”1 On the surface anyway, graduates of the new universities seemed to be getting as involved, or even more involved, in politics than the old-time college graduates of the mugwump era who were definitely less professionalized. Where turn- of-the-century professionals became involved in the Progressive movement, the affiliates of the old-time college often abstained.
