Utilizing archives of nineteenth-century student writing as well as disciplinary and institutional histories, this study recovers student writing as material social practice, foregrounding, rather than effacing, cultural contradictions at three institutional sites. Drawing on scholarship in literary, cultural, and New Literacy Studies, this project returns to the literacy crisis at nineteenth-century Harvard and asks the critical question: what were Harvard examiners reading when they were reading illiteracy? Harvard scholars A. S. Hill, Barrett Wendell, and LeBaron Russell Briggs evaluated student writing according to its literary value, identifying two key elements of style—commonplaceness and sentimentality—as indicators of subliteracy that signified dependence. -

Many passages, which properly found place in a book intended for general reading, involved expressions of opinion obviously unsuitable for schools. In prepar- ing this school version, our object has accordingly been to omit needless or debatable matter, but to preserve the general outline and all available portions of the original work. To aid us in our task, we submitted the Literary His- tory, chapter by chapter, to an advanced class of students at Harvard College, whom we encouraged to criticise it minutely in writing. The energy and good sense with which they did so have enabled us to correct many slight errors, and, at the same time, have strengthened our conviction that the earlier book was historically sound. The interview was conducted by Robert Brown for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Interview [TAPE 1, SIDE 1] Note: Susan Thompson, associate of Crite, participated in interview of Oct. 22. ALLAN ROHAN CRITE I was born March 20, 1910, at 190 Grove Street, North Plainfield, NJ. As far as my memory of the place is concerned, I'll be a little bit vague because I left there when I was less than a year old, and came to Boston. But I did go back just recently, during the month of December, so I had a chance to see my birthplace -- the house is still standing. It's a funny little two-storey frame house, on a tree-lined street. ROBERT BROWN: Why did your parents bring you up here [Boston]? ALLAN ROHAN CRITE Well, I brought my parents to Boston (both laugh). I really don't know, exactly. My father was studying at Cornell University, and then I think he came and went to the University of Vermont. I think my mother, when she came to Boston, worked out in Danvers for some wealthy family there. -

The American Watercolor Society was established in New York in by Nancy Allyn Jarzombek 1867 to promote the production of watercolors and their purchase. Below are some highlights: • in the 1850s, second generation seth M. Vose (1831-1910) owned a small framing and art supply store in Providence, ri, which was patronized by many New england artists. The business grew under his guidance, and by the 1860s seth naturally progressed into exhibiting works by these artists.
