Actually it i.s a combinatioa of aiito- biograpliy and political tract and journal, in which the most formal part comes first and the rest was added on lo it as occasion offered. But, the whole is certainly auto- biographical and covers Increase Mather's life faithfull}'. It was tlie mainstay of Cotton Mather's famous biograpliy Pareniator, which appeared in 1724, and of Kenneth Mur- dock's Increase Miiîher, whicli was published two liundred and one years later.^ Printing the autobiography Jiere is in no way designed to improve or correct Mather's biog- raphers. They have done well by him. But their premises and purposes were inevitabiy different from liis. I'he present undertaking is to let Increase Matlier also be lieard on tlie subject of himself. Readers who wish to do so are invited to turn witliout more ado to page 277, where tliey may read the rjriginal without interruption. THE WORD OF GOD IN PURITAN NEW ENGLAND: SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY PERSPECTIVES ON THE NATURE AND AUTHORITY OF THE BIBLE ALLENCARDEN Biola College La Mirada, California Those who would truly understand what American Puritanism was all about would do well to give heed to the sources from which the Puritans drew their ideas. It should come as no surprise that the principal source of Puritan ideology was the Bible itself. What is sur- prising is the way in which some historians, most notably the late Perry Miller, have ignored or minimized the Puritans' biblicism while attempting to unearth non-biblical roots for Puritan concepts. Instead of accepting the Puritans' own statements about their reliance on Scripture, Miller turned to more humanistic sources. In his massive work The New England Mind: The 17th Century, he makes passing comments about the Puritan acceptance of Scripture, but his emphasis is on "the four quarries from which the Puritan scholars carved out their principal ideas and doctrines"-European Protestantism, special interests and preoccupations of the seven- teenth century, humanism, and medieval scholasticism. ' The Puritans obviously did not operate in a cultural vacuum; they could not help but be influenced by the intellectual and cultural climate of their day. Lowell Charles s. h opkinson (1869-1962) The Innocent Eye June 8-July 20, 2013 V ose Fine American Art for Six Generations Est 1841 G alleries llc introduCtion Vose Galleries is pleased to present our fifth one-man exhibition of works by Boston painter Charles Sydney Hopkinson (1869-1962), most of which have come directly from the Hopkinson family and have never before been offered for sale. We present fifteen watercolors and fifteen oil paintings, including the powerful cover work, Yacht Races , which illustrates Hopkinson’s life long search for new methods and ideas in the making of art. Unlike most of his Boston con - temporaries who studied and taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Hopkinson chose a different approach. He studied at the Art Students League in New York City, whose instructors followed a less dogmatic method of teaching. The artist also made several trips to Europe, where he viewed exciting new forms of self-expression. He was one of only a few Boston artists to be invited to show work in the avant-garde International Exhibition of Modern Art in New York City in 1913, which exposed audiences to the radical art movements taking place in Europe, particularly in France. Now cel - ebrating its one-hundredth year anniversary, the exhi - bition, which is now commonly referred to as the Armory Show of 1913, has become a watershed in the history of modernism in the United States. -

Utilizing archives of nineteenth-century student writing as well as disciplinary and institutional histories, this study recovers student writing as material social practice, foregrounding, rather than effacing, cultural contradictions at three institutional sites. Drawing on scholarship in literary, cultural, and New Literacy Studies, this project returns to the literacy crisis at nineteenth-century Harvard and asks the critical question: what were Harvard examiners reading when they were reading illiteracy? Harvard scholars A. S. Hill, Barrett Wendell, and LeBaron Russell Briggs evaluated student writing according to its literary value, identifying two key elements of style—commonplaceness and sentimentality—as indicators of subliteracy that signified dependence. -

Many passages, which properly found place in a book intended for general reading, involved expressions of opinion obviously unsuitable for schools. In prepar- ing this school version, our object has accordingly been to omit needless or debatable matter, but to preserve the general outline and all available portions of the original work. To aid us in our task, we submitted the Literary His- tory, chapter by chapter, to an advanced class of students at Harvard College, whom we encouraged to criticise it minutely in writing. The energy and good sense with which they did so have enabled us to correct many slight errors, and, at the same time, have strengthened our conviction that the earlier book was historically sound.
