First, in March, at the next ordinary UEFA Congress, the terms of six members of the UEFA Executive Committee come to an end, three of whom are not standing for re-election. In addition, the seat that has been vacant since the death of Mathieu Sprengers has to be filled, as do two additional seats, giving the Executive Committee an unprecedented injection of new blood. Then in May, the current club competition cycle concludes. In the UEFA Champions League, it will be the last final to be played on a Wednesday, thereby ending a tradition that dates back to the creation of the competition. In the UEFA Cup, it will be the last final ever under that name before the competition becomes the UEFA Europa League and takes on a brand-new format. This year also heralds the end of an era for the UEFA Women’s Cup, which is set to change format and be linked to the UEFA Champions League, with the finals of the two competitions to take place in future in the same city during the same week. -

Meridian Project 11 Calendar 23 PHOTO: EMPICS confirmationeditorial and questions The World Cup final in Yokohama, Japan, involved two of the most respected teams in world football, despite repeated upsets to the favourites from the opening match onwards. The fact that known quantities ultimately reached the final should not lull us into underestimating the lessons to be learned from this first World Cup to be played on Asian soil. Without going into detail or drawing peremptory conclu- sions, we can still say that, while it confirmed a gratifying trend, the tournament in Japan and Korea also raised many questions. It confirmed that football has become a truly global affair and that standards outside the traditional continents have definitely improved. The results achieved by the host nations, and by South Korea in particular, are certainly due in part to them having the home advantage, but, most of all, the quality of play displayed by these teams is clear proof that the efforts undertaken in recent years to improve standards of play, often under the guidance of European coaches, have well and truly paid off. -

FC Porto win the UEFA PHOTO: SPORTIMAGE Champions League 07 News from member associations 17 EditorialA tribute to youth football Here we are in the midst of the European Championship, an event that is one of the high spots in a European professional footballer’s career. Not long before the finals kicked off, some of the players involved in EURO 2004 experienced another great moment in their careers by playing in one of the UEFA club competition finals. From Gothenburg to Portugal, via Gelsenkirchen, millions of TV viewers in Europe and throughout the world were regaled with the very best football our continent can offer. The great technical standard of these events is a result of excellence in training, a reality brought home to clubs and their associations several years ago. And if anyone still needs convincing, ample evidence was provided by the final round of the European Under-17 Championship held in France in May. Most of the young players demonstrated qualities that have already been well honed, and the Under-21 tournament held in Germany in June showed why a large number of footballers of this age are already first-team players with their clubs.
