Vol.IX, No. 6, November-December 2012 OBSTACLES TO AN INDONESIA-TAIWAN ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP Editor’s Note: Who Actually Runs the 3 The Fading Indonesian’s Solidarity 8 Government? Obstacles to Habibie, Indonesia, an Indonesia-Taiwan 6 15 and Malaysia Economic Partnership Editor’s Note The Fading Indonesian’s Solidarity Anarchic demonstrations, more often lately than before, conflicts between villagers, citizens, students and the elements of both the urban and rural societies may indicate the fading of the Indonesians’ solidarity among its members. Why does the fading of the social solidarity happen? This time, the Indonesians are experiencing the multidimensional crisis that is eroding the culture of mutual assistance, the community group work, caring for each other and social gap, while the social solidarity in essence is the Indonesians’ self identity. The self identity, according to the Minister for Social Affairs, Salim Segaf Al Jufri , “is something needs rebuilding” by empowering the social solidarity movement by involving various elements that may prevent the brittle of the nation’s strength (Republika, 2012). By the easily breaking of the social solidarity into social conflicts—in many instances without reasonable cause whatsoever—shows one thing: trust between one another is thinning and thinning. Nobody can tell whether the trust will disappear altogether or will endure the test of the time. Nobody actually wants the trust will fade away but there is nobody that is able to promote a solution to the jumble mumble of the situation. Demonstrations have developed into struggle, often anarchic, to get the Publisher: A. • Daim: New Financial Hub Proposal Merits Consideration (NST 11/03
11/03/2000 Daim: New financial hub proposal merits consideration Hardev Kaur in Jakarta JAKARTA, Fri: The proposal for a new financial centre, possibly based in Bandar Seri Begawan, to facilitate financial transactions among Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei, deserves serious consideration despite there being already such centres in East Asia and South-East Asia. Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid, who had discussed the proposal with the Sultan of Brunei recently, raised the matter during bilateral talks with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the Merdeka Palace yesterday. Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin said details of the proposal as well as implications of the move must be studied. He was asked whether there is room for another centre, considering there are already Labuan International Offshore Financial Centre (IOFC), the Bangkok Financial Centre, Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo. "If there is business, why not?" Daim said. In fact, members of the East Asia Growth Area (EAGA) - Malaysia, Brunei Indonesia and the Philippines - have agreed that the Labuan IOFC serve as the financial centre for the grouping. Even so, the proposal should not be rejected outright, he said, adding that Indonesia and Brunei might have their reasons for suggesting it. When Malaysia decided to set up Labuan IOFC, it undertook several detailed studies including looking at operations of existing financial centres such as the one in the Cayman Islands. Daim is in the high-powered delegation accompanying Dr Mahathir on his two-day official visit here. The Finance Minister, who is also Special Functions Minister, held parallel discussions with his counterpart and the republic's other economic ministers.

  • Malaysia Puts Ties with Timor Leste on Stronger Footing
23 OCT 2003 Mahathir-Timor MALAYSIA PUTS TIES WITH TIMOR LESTE ON STRONGER FOOTING By: Ahmad Zukiman Zain DILI, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad laid the foundation stone for the new Malaysian Embassy complex here, putting the country's ties with Timor Leste on stronger ground. The Prime Minister also planted a sandalwood tree at the strategic, sea-front site at Praia dos Conqueiros, symbolising Malaysia's commitment to working with Timor Leste in its reconstruction process. In a speech to commemorate the event, Timor Leste's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Dr Jose Ramos Horta, acknowledged the importance of bilateral ties between the two countries and commended Dr Mahathir for being the first head of Goverment to visit this country since its independence in May 2002. The historic ceremony was part of a tight schedule for Dr Mahathir who was on the second day of his three-day visit which started with the official welcoming ceremony at the Government Palace this morning. • Malaysia's General Elections Amidst the Shadow of Re-Mahathirisation
Kajian Malaysia, Vol. 32, Supp. 2, 2014, 1–24 MALAYSIA'S GENERAL ELECTIONS AMIDST THE SHADOW OF RE-MAHATHIRISATION 1* 2 Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid and Muhamad Takiyuddin Ismail 1School of Distance Education, Universiti Sains Malaysia, 11800 USM Pulau Pinang, Malaysia 2Centre of History, Politics and Strategy, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 UKM Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia *Corresponding author: [email protected] This article discusses the phenomenon of re-Mahathirisation which engulfed the politics of Malaysia's ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition and its main component party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). Re- Mahathirisation refers to the increase in attachment towards the legacy of Malaysia's fourth Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad (1981–2003). Transpiring not long after Mahathir's relinquishment of official power, the process was seen as approaching a peak with BN-UMNO's campaign for the 13th General Elections (GE13) of May 2013. It was orchestrated especially by conservative elements in UMNO disillusioned with the political liberalisation began by his successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (2003–2009) and continued by Najib Razak. In line with an understanding of conservatism as characterised by resistance against radical change and by admiration of past values, re- Mahathirisation was employed by the BN-UMNO regime during the GE13 hustings to court the large pool of conservative-minded Malay voters. The successful dislodging of Abdullah Badawi from the party-cum-national leadership in 2009 signified a powerful return of Mahathirism to the foreground of UMNO and national politics. Although Najib Razak has pursued Abdullah's political liberalisation initiatives, he felt compelled to tolerate a rising public presence of Mahathir.

  • KEEPING the FAITH: PM Puts Reputation on the Line Brendan Pereira February 15, 2006 New Straits Times
KEEPING THE FAITH: PM puts reputation on the line Brendan Pereira February 15, 2006 New Straits Times Feb 14: YESTERDAY was not about the ebullient Datuk Effendi Norwawi being hoisted onto the political mainstage once again, two years after his health scare. It was not about International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz proving that there is life after the Approved Permits fiasco. It was not about Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor showing that there is no such thing as political oblivion in Malaysian politics. It was about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi putting his reputation on the line and banking on 33 ministers and 39 deputy ministers to deliver big over the next two years. The stakes are high for the ruling coalition, and for the man who currently occupies the top job in the country. Fail, and the consequences will be grave. He knows that the reservoir of goodwill which followed the Barisan Nasional’s grand election victory in 2004 is emptying. He knows that after the pundits and armchair critics have exhausted all their arguments in coffee houses, the only thing that would really matter in Malaysia is this — whether the economy is humming. He is aware that the next 24 months will define how well he is judged and how well the BN fares in the next election. There will be little wiggle room for Abdullah and his band of ministers. Day One of their task will be on March 31 — the day the Ninth Malaysia Plan is tabled. Privately, Abdullah likes to use this analogy when describing the challenge that lies ahead for him and his team.

Nichols Professor of Mass Communications Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT This study examines how socio-political blogs contribute to the development of democracy in Malaysia. It suggests that blogs perform three main functions, which help make a democracy more meaningful: blogs as fifth estate, blogs as networks, and blogs as platform for expression. First, blogs function as the fifth estate performing checks-and-balances over the government. This function is expressed by blogs’ role in the dissemination of information, providing alternative perspectives that challenge the dominant frame, and setting of news agenda. The second function of blogs is that they perform as networks. This is linked to the social-networking aspect of the blogosphere both online and offline. Blogs also have the potential to act as mobilizing agents. The mobilizing capability of blogs facilitated the mass street protests, which took place in late- 2007 and early-2008 in Malaysia.
