CoP16 Prop. 51 Inclusion of Operculicarya decaryi in Appendix II Proponent: Madagascar Summary: Operculicarya decaryi sometimes known as jabihy is a deciduous thick-stemmed (pachycaul) tree endemic to Madagascar which can grow up to nine metres tall. It is one of eight species in the genus Operculicarya, seven of which are endemic to Madagascar, with the eighth (O. gummifera) occurring in Madagascar and the Comoros. It is widespread in thorny scrub and degraded semi-deciduous forest at low altitude in southern Madagascar, within an overall area of some 90 000 km2 and an area of occupancy of at least 3000 km2, with at least 30 subpopulations within this area. The species can be locally abundant, with an estimate of over 30 000 individuals within one sub-population. The species is present in at least three protected areas (Cap Sainte Marie Special Reserve and Andohahela and Tsimananpetsotsa National Parks).O. decaryi is cultivated as an ornamental plant due to its bonsai form, particularly in China. Wild collection has reportedly taken place. Exports from Madagascar, apparently mostly of small plants is recorded as having taken place. Some 3400 plants were recorded by the CITES Management Authority of Madagascar as exported in the period 2003-2006, most (around 2700) in 2006. Exports have not been reported since then. The species is reported to be straightforward to propagate. In China recent trade is said to be largely or entirely in cultivated plants. The species has reportedly been in cultivation in China for some time, so that large, mature plants may be available from artificially propagated material. -

Helmer1 Abstract - Tropical dry forests on calcareous substrate constitute the main vegetation cover in many islands of the Caribbean. Dry climate and nutrient scarcity in those environments are ideal to investigate the potential role of high levels of soil calcium (Ca) in regulating plant selection and productivity. We analyzed the elemental composition of soil, loose lit- ter, and leaf samples of the woody vegetation on the plateau of Mona Island, an emergent block of carbonate rock in the Caribbean located between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, to explore the nutrient relationships of plants growing on calcareous substrates. The mineral soil has an elemental composition characterized by high levels of aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) in agreement with the hypothesis that it derives in part from sediments transported by rivers eroding plutonic rocks, and deposited before the massive lifting of biological limestone. Calcium concentration varied within sites, and Ca–Al and Ca–Fe cor- relations were negative in soils and positive in plant material, implying that element uptake from these soils depends on acidification of the rhizosphere. This acidification should be high enough to extract carbonate-bound elements and solubilize Al, Fe, and probably phos- phate (P) compounds. The most abundant cation in leaves was Ca, followed by potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg); Ca/K and Ca/Mg molar ratios averaged 2 and 3, respectively, in- dicating that most species maintain K and Mg uptake in the presence of high Ca levels. -

China *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Abstract Rhus typhina is a kind of indigenous species to North America, it has been accommodated in many mountain areas in north China because of this species can display luxuriant growth in different habitat even in unfertile soils. In this study, we observed the morphology and ultra structure of secondary phloem and resin canal. We focus on the detailed observation of the microstructure and ultrastructure of the secondary phloem and resin canal, and to figure out the characteristics on the structure and the secretory process of epithelial cells. Our results showed that the structure of the secondary phloem exhibits the characteristics of typical temperate trees. And the mature resin canal of Rhus typhina comprised epithelial cells delimiting a long, round lumen, where secretions accumulate in the lumen. In the active epithelial cell, Golgi apparatus shaped secretory granules with monofilm, then move to attach on the plasma membrane and fused with the internal flocculent material of secretory granule was then released to the lumen side of periplasmic space, and finally, the excretion spread to the lumen and formed the secretions. This study shows the details of information on the structure of the Rhus typhina secondary phloem and epithelial cells, and the secretion process.
