Kalyani, District Nadia, West Bengal, India Srlpati (fl. A.D. 1039-1056) is best known for his writings on astronomy, arithmetic, mensuration, and algebra. This article discusses Sripati’s arithmetic, the Ganitatilaka, as well as the arithmetical and algebraic chapters of the SiddhdntaSekhara. In addition to discussing the kinds of problems considered by Srlpati and the techniques he used to solve them, the article considers the sources upon which Sripati drew. The Diamond Method of Factoring a Quadratic Equation Important: Remember that the first step in any factoring is to look at each term and factor out the greatest common factor. For example: 3x2 + 6x + 12 = 3(x2 + 2x + 4) AND 5x2 + 10x = 5x(x + 2) If the leading coefficient is negative, always factor out the negative. Borwein, University of Newcastle, Australia 1 A quartically convergent algorithm for Pi: Jon and Peter Borwein’s first “big” result In 1985, Jonathan and Peter Borwein published a “quartically convergent” algorithm for π. “Quartically convergent” means that each iteration approximately quadruples the number of correct digits (provided all iterations are performed with full precision): Set a0 = 6 - sqrt[2], and y0 = sqrt[2] - 1. Then iterate: 1 (1 y4)1/4 y = − − k k+1 1+(1 y4)1/4 − k a = a (1 + y )4 22k+3y (1 + y + y2 ) k+1 k k+1 − k+1 k+1 k+1 Then ak, converge quartically to 1/π. This algorithm, together with the Salamin-Brent scheme, has been employed in numerous computations of π. Both this and the Salamin-Brent scheme are based on the arithmetic-geometric mean and some ideas due to Gauss, but evidently he (nor anyone else until 1976) ever saw the connection to computation. Solving Cubic Polynomials 1.1 The general solution to the quadratic equation There are four steps to finding the zeroes of a quadratic polynomial. 1. First divide by the leading term, making the polynomial monic. a 2. Then, given x2 + a x + a , substitute x = y − 1 to obtain an equation without the linear term. 1 0 2 (This is the \depressed" equation.) 3. Solve then for y as a square root. (Remember to use both signs of the square root.) a 4. According to Indian tradition, there existed 18 early astronomical texts (siddhantas) composed by Surya, Pitamaha and many others. Varahamihira compiled five astronomical texts in a book named panchasiddhantika, which is now the link between early and later siddhantas. Indian scholars had no practice of writing their own names in their works, so, it is very difficult to identify them. Aryabhata is the first name noticed, in the book Aryabhatiya. After this point most astronomers and astro-writers wrote their names in their works. In this paper I have tried to analyze the works of astronomers like Aryabhata, Varahamihira, Brah- magupta, Bhaskara I, Vateswara, Sripati and Bhaskaracharya in a modern context and to obtain an account of Indian astronomical knowledge. Aryabhata is the first Indian astronomer who stated that the rising and setting of the Sun, the Moon and other heavenly bodies was due to the relative motion of the Earth caused by the rotation of the Earth about its own axis. -

I have chosen two examples: one from the 7th century, Brahmagupta, and the other, Ra- manujan, from the 20th century. Both of these are very fascinating figures, and their histories illustrate various as- pects of mathematics in ancient and modern times. In a very real sense their works are still relevant to the mathe- matics of today. Some great ancient Indian figures of Science Varahamihira (505–587) Brahmagupta (598-670) Bhaskara II (1114–1185) The modern era Ramanujan, S (1887–1920) Raman, C. V (1888–1970) Mahalanobis, P. C (1893–1972) Harish-Chandra (1923–1983) Bhaskara represents the peak of mathematical and astro- nomical knowledge in the 12th century. He reached an un- derstanding of calculus, astronomy, the number systems, and solving equations, which were not to be achieved any- where else in the world for several centuries...(Wikipedia). Indian science languished after that, the British colonial occupation did not help, but in the 19th century there was a renaissance of arts and sciences, and Indian Science even- tually reached a level comparable to western science. Chapter 5 Complex numbers Why be one-dimensional when you can be two-dimensional? ? 3 2 1 0 1 2 3 − − − ? We begin by returning to the familiar number line, where I have placed the question marks there appear to be no numbers. I shall rectify this by defining the complex numbers which give us a number plane rather than just a number line. Complex numbers play a fundamental rˆolein mathematics. In this chapter, I shall use them to show how e and π are connected and how certain primes can be factorized. They are also fundamental to physics where they are used in quantum mechanics. 5.1 Complex number arithmetic In the set of real numbers we can add, subtract, multiply and divide, but we cannot always extract square roots. For example, the real number 1 has 125 126 CHAPTER 5. COMPLEX NUMBERS the two real square roots 1 and 1, whereas the real number 1 has no real square roots, the reason being that− the square of any real non-zero− number is always positive. In this section, we shall repair this lack of square roots and, as we shall learn, we shall in fact have achieved much more than this. Com- plex numbers were first studied in the 1500’s but were only fully accepted and used in the 1800’s. Warning! If r is a positive real number then √r is usually interpreted to mean the positive square root. If I want to emphasize that both square roots need to be considered I shall write √r. -

HISTORIA MATHEMATICA 2 (1975) , 167-184 RATIONALE OF THE CHAKRAVALA PROCESS OF JAYADEVA AND BHASKARA II BY CLAS-OLOF SELENIUS UNIVERSITY OF UPPSALA SUMMARIES The old Indian chakravala method for solving the Bhaskara-Pell equation or varga-prakrti x 2- Dy 2 = 1 is investigated and explained in detail. Previous mis- conceptions are corrected, for example that chakravgla, the short cut method bhavana included, corresponds to the quick-method of Fermat. The chakravala process corresponds to a half-regular best approximating algorithm of minimal length which has several deep minimization properties. The periodically appearing quantities (jyestha-mfila, kanistha-mfila, ksepaka, kuttak~ra, etc.) are correctly understood only with the new theory. Mathematics has been a common language which has united mankind. Mathematics has been the heart of our education system right from the school level. Creating interest in this subject and making it friendlier to students’ right from early ages is essential. Understanding the subject as well as its history are both equally important. This article briefly discusses the ancient, the medieval, and the present age of mathematics and some notable mathematicians who belonged to these periods. Mathematics is the abstract study of different areas that include, but not limited to, numbers, 1.Introduction quantity, space, structure, and change. In other words, it is the science of structure, order, and relation that has evolved from elemental practices of counting, measuring, and describing the shapes of objects. Mathematicians seek out patterns and formulate new conjectures. They resolve the truth or falsity of conjectures by mathematical proofs, which are arguments sufficient to convince other mathematicians of their validity.
