A Midsummer Night’s Dream Definitions Know exactly what you are saying at all times. Use the Lexicons, Shakespeare’s Words, Shakespeare A to Z, Shakespeare’s Bawdy, and footnotes. Anoint two dueling “Lexicon Masters” each day. Make dictionary work COOL! Verse & Prose Shakespeare is about 75% verse (poetic line form) and 25% prose form. The form of writing might indicate a clue as to the type of character you are playing. Prose is sometimes an indication that the character might be of a lower class, comic or mad, while verse might indicate that your character is of higher class, intelligent, clever, etc. Pay particular attention to when a character switches from poetry to prose and visa versa. This is a major clue from Shakespeare. Verse PRINCE And for that offence Immediately we do exile him hence. Gearhart, Advisor In this thesis, I examine six adaptations of the narrative known primarily through William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark to answer how so many versions of the same story can successfully exist at the same time. I use a homology proposed by Gary Bortolotti and Linda Hutcheon that explains there is a similar process behind cultural and biological adaptation. Drawing from the connection between literary adaptations and evolution developed by Bortolotti and Hutcheon, I argue there is also a connection between variation among literary adaptations of the same story and variation among species of the same organism. Performing Shakespeare in Contemporary Taiwan by Ya-hui Huang A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire Jan 2012 Abstract Since the 1980s, Taiwan has been subjected to heavy foreign and global influences, leading to a marked erosion of its traditional cultural forms. Indigenous traditions have had to struggle to hold their own and to strike out into new territory, adopt or adapt to Western models. For most theatres in Taiwan, Shakespeare has inevitably served as a model to be imitated and a touchstone of quality. Such Taiwanese Shakespeare performances prove to be much more than merely a combination of Shakespeare and Taiwan, constituting a new fusion which shows Taiwan as hospitable to foreign influences and unafraid to modify them for its own purposes. Nonetheless, Shakespeare performances in contemporary Taiwan are not only a demonstration of hybridity of Westernisation but also Sinification influences. Since the 1945 Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party, or KMT) takeover of Taiwan, the KMT’s one-party state has established Chinese identity over a Taiwan identity by imposing cultural assimilation through such practices as the Mandarin-only policy during the Chinese Cultural Renaissance in Taiwan. Both Taiwan and Mainland China are on the margin of a “metropolitan bank of Shakespeare knowledge” (Orkin, 2005, p. 1), but it is this negotiation of identity that makes the Taiwanese interpretation of Shakespeare much different from that of a Mainlanders’ approach, while they share certain commonalities that inextricably link them. This study thus examines the interrelation between Taiwan and Mainland China operatic cultural forms and how negotiation of their different identities constitutes a singular different Taiwanese Shakespeare from Chinese Shakespeare. -

Addenda 235 INTRODUCTION This edition of Hamlet aims in the first place at giving a trustworthy text. Secondly, it attempts to exhibit the variations from that text which are found in the primary sources—the Quarto of 1604 and the Folio of 1623 — in so far as those variations are of importance towards the ascertainment of the text. Every variation is not recorded, but I have chosen to err on the side of excess rather than on that of defect. Readings from the Quarto of 1603 are occa- sionally given, and also from the later Quartos and Folios, but to record such readings is not a part of the design of this edition. 1 The letter Q means Quarto 604 ; F means Folio 1623. The dates of the later Quartos are as follows: —Q 3, 1605 161 1 undated 6, For ; Q 4, ; Q 5, ; Q 1637. my few references to these later Quartos I have trusted the Cambridge Shakespeare and Furness's edition of Hamlet. After a survey of the silent Hamlet productions, the paper critically examines Asta Nielsen‟s Hamlet: The Drama of Vengeance by noting how her main character is really a woman. My discussion of the modern productions of Shakespeare begins with a critical discussion of Lawrence Olivier‟s seminal production of 1948. The Russian Hamlet of 1964, directed by Grigori Kozintsev, is shown to combine a psychological interpretation of the hero without disregarding its socio-political context. The action-film genre deployed by Franco Zeffirelli in his 1990 adaptation of the play, through a moving performance by Mel Gibson, is analysed. Kenneth Branagh‟s ambitious and well-financed production of 1996 is shown to be somewhat marred by its excesses. Michael Almereyda‟s attempt to present Shakespeare‟s hero in a contemporary setting is shown to have powerful moments despite its flaws. The paper concludes that Shakespeare‟s masterpiece will continue to fascinate future generations of directors, actors and audiences. Before 1576, there were no theaters in England, and so all actors would travel from town to town to perform their plays. Travel was difficult in Elizabethan England. Not only was the travel slow, but there were dangers of getting attacked by thieves or of catching the plague! Traveling troupes of actors were sponsored by the nobility, who enjoyed the entertainment they provided. They would need a license from a Bailiff to be able to travel around England performing, and these licenses were only granted to the aristocracy for them to maintain their acting troupes. The actors also needed support from their patrons to be able to wear clothing of the nobility! England’s Sumptuary Laws prohibited anyone from wearing clothing above their rank unless they were given to them and approved by their noble patron. Today, much has changed in how we tour our Shakespearean plays, but there are still many similarities between our tour and those early acting troupes. We travel from town to town across the state of Washington, battling long drives, traffic, and snow in the mountain passes to get there safely and perform for the enjoyment of our audiences. We also could not do this tour without the generous support of our own sponsors, who help underwrite our travel, support scholarships for schools in need, and help us pay for costume and set upgrades. Just like the Elizabethan acting troupes, we could not do it without support from our generous, Shakespeare-loving patrons!
