IMPRENTA UNIVERSITARIA.—ESTADO 63.—SANTIAGO DE CHILE Rev. James F. Garvin, Chile, 1884 - 1923. Twixt the Andes and the Sea. YEfi R BOOK OF THE PRESBYTERIfiM MISSION in CHILE. SANTIAGO DE CHILE IMPRENTA UNIVERSITARIA ESTADO, 63 1924 FOREWORD The completion of the Canal and the lure of southern seas and strange cities has brought an ever-increasing stream of visitors to the countries lying south of Panamá. People are interested in seeing Guayaquil, from which yellow fever has been effectually banished; Callao, with its San Lorenzo raised over night from the deep; Lima and the oldest University in the western hemisphere; La Paz, in its matchless setting. But after experienc- ing all these thrills, Buenos Aires beckons, and Chile too often serves only as a narrow vestibule between Valparaiso and Mendoza. From the ship in the bay, Valparaiso presents an attractive am- phitheatre, but its steep hillg do not tempt the passing visitor to a closer acquaintance, and a half- day is as much as he can spare. Santiago, nestled among its snow-clad mountains, may detain him as long as three days, but Chile—the real Chile, — 6 — north and south, with its mighty deserts threaded by nitrate deposits and copper veins, its great central valley lush in pastorage and dotted by thousands of grazing herds—Chile with its 2 600 miles of coast-line and busy ports remains little more than a name on the map for the casual tourist. For those who are interested in this beautiful and promising country this little book is written. It presents the undertakings and achievements during the year 1923, of the Presbyterian Mission in its endeavour to help in the solution of Chile's problems and in the development of its rugged citizens.

Pelser | Received 27 March 2020 | Accepted 15 April 2020 | Published 3 June 2020 Citation: Calvo J, Moreira-Muñoz A (2020) Senecio festucoides (Senecioneae, Compositae), a new species from northern Chile. PhytoKeys 149: 89–98. https://doi.org/10.3897/phytokeys.149.52297 Abstract Senecio festucoides is described from northern Chile. The new species is morphologically similar to the discoid caespitose Andean species and belongs to the subgroup displaying yellow corollas and yellowish anthers and style branches. It is characterized by a weak, not self-supporting stem, narrowly linear leaves, long pedunculate capitula with (17–)21 involucral bracts, and minutely papillose achenes. Among other characters, the color of the corollas, anthers, and style branches and the number of involucral bracts dif- ferentiate it from S. scorzonerifolius, which is the morphologically closest species. The new species thrives in the desertic Puna ecoregion and grows amongst tufts of Festuca chrysophylla (Poaceae). Detailed pictures of living plants are provided, as well as a distribution map and a dichotomous key to the discoid caespitose Senecio species from northern Chile. THE STATUS OF ANTHROPOLOGY IN CHILE By DONALD D. BRAND Chile recognizes the existence of Anthropology, but has no for- mally trained anthropologists, and has no chairs or departments of An- thropology. Due to the existence of archaeologic material pertaining to a number of the higher middle American cultures in northern Chile, and the existence of aboriginal populations in Araucania and Fuegia, both Chileans and foreigners have long carried on desultory investiga- tions in archaeology, ethnology, linguistics, and physical anthropology. This work has been highly sporadic in time, spotted in areal distribu- tion, and uneven in quantity, quality, and content subject. COLONIAL PERIOD Europeans first saw Chile in 1520 when Magellan passed through the straits bearing his name, and Pigafettal noted down observations concerning Patagonian Indians (not in present Chilean area, however). Chilean Indians were first encountered2 in 1535-36 by Almagro and his men who descended into northern Chile from Peru and Bolivia by way of northwestern Argentina and across the Andes to Copiap6.

  • Geologic Structure of the Taltal Area, Northern Chile, in Relation to the Earthquake of December 28, 1966
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America. Vol. 58, No. 3, pp. 835-842. June, 1968 GEOLOGIC STRUCTURE OF THE TALTAL AREA, NORTHERN CHILE, IN RELATION TO THE EARTHQUAKE OF DECEMBER 28, 1966 BY WALTER J. ARABASZ ABSTRACT The Taltal area, which lies within the coastal cordillera of northern Chile, is domi- nated by a group of major active faults that cut a eugeosynclinal section of pre- dominantly Jurassic andesites overlying Paleozoic metamorphic and plutonlc rocks and intruded by Late Mesozoic plutons. The Atacama fault, a suggested regional strike-sllp fracture parallel to the coastline, has been obliquely cut and left- laterally offset 10 km by the Taltal fault, which passes through the town of Taltal. Three distinctive features were found to be consistently offset 10 km by the Taltal fault: the easternmost strand of the Atacama fault, an intrusive con- tact, and a unique volcanic unit. Former continuity of the Atacama fault through the Taltal region is proposed, and subsequent disruption by the Taltal fault ap- pears to have caused major structural readjustments in the still-active Atacama fault zone. The tentative offshore epicenter and aftershock distribution of the December 28 earthquake are nol directly correlative with faults that have been mapped in the nearby on-shore areas; this lack of correlation is not surprising in view of the suggested depths of hypocenters in the lower crust or upper mantle. INTRODUCTION The Taltal earthquake of December 28, 1966, and its aftershocks occurred in a part of northern Chile for which there is limited published geologic information to assist in interpreting the seismic events.

  • BASES DE CONVOCATORIA REACTÍVATE PYME Comunas De Taltal, Mejillones, Tocopilla, María Elena, Sierra Gorda, San Pedro De Atacam
