It extends from latitudes 18 to 56 degrees south and contains one of the driest regions in the world and one of the wettest areas in South America. It is bound on the north by Peru, on the northeast by Bolivia, on its long eastern border (3,200 miles) by Argentina and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. In its economy and public services, Chile is one of the most developed countries in the Andean region. Climate: Extending over 38 degrees of latitude, from the tropics to the vicinity of Antarctica, and from sea level to altitudes of over 20,000 feet, Chile has a wide variety of climatic conditions. Extreme aridity prevails over the northern part of the country; the average annual rainfall in this region is 0.04 inches. Temperatures are moderate along the coast throughout the year and more extreme inland, especially in the central basin. -
Crustal Deformation Associated with the 1960 Earthquake Events in the South of Chile
Paper No. CDDFV CRUSTAL DEFORMATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE 1960 EARTHQUAKE EVENTS IN THE SOUTH OF CHILE Felipe Villalobos 1 ABSTRACT Large earthquakes can cause significant subsidence and uplifts of one or two meters. In the case of subsidence, coastal and fluvial retaining structures may therefore no longer be useful, for instance, against flooding caused by a tsunami. However, tectonic subsidence caused by large earthquakes is normally not considered in geotechnical designs. This paper describes and analyses the 1960 earthquakes that occurred in the south of Chile, along almost 1000 km between Concepción and the Taitao peninsula. Attention is paid to the 9.5 moment magnitude earthquake aftermath in the city of Valdivia, where a tsunami occurred followed by the overflow of the Riñihue Lake. Valdivia and its surrounding meadows were flooded due to a subsidence of approximately 2 m. The paper presents hypotheses which would explain why today the city is not flooded anymore. Answers can be found in the crustal deformation process occurring as a result of the subduction thrust. Various hypotheses show that the subduction mechanism in the south of Chile is different from that in the north. It is believed that there is also an elastic short-term effect which may explain an initial recovery and a viscoelastic long-term effect which may explain later recovery. Furthermore, measurements of crustal deformation suggest that a process of stress relaxation is still occurring almost 50 years after the main seismic event. 11 DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS This chapter will focus on two main subjects: 1. “Gateway”—How is Chile doing as the “gateway”? Can it strengthen this function? How? 2. Logistics for export and import—How are goods transported and distributed in Chile? What are remaining problems? The first subject will place Chile in the international perspectives. The second subject will concentrate on Chile’s domestic systems. 11.1 Chile as the “Gateway”: International Distribution 11.1.1 International Cargo Movements through the “Gateway” Chile’s function as the “gateway” is already a real one though it is still limited in terms of cargo volume. Figure 11.1.1 is reproduced here (originally Figure 10.2.6, Chapter 10) to indicate the extent of that function. As is seen, transit cargos as a whole only account for a fraction of total international movements.1 It is also evident that most of the transit cargos go through the North Zone, to and from Bolivia primarily. The annual total volume of transit cargos (880,000 tons westbound and 510,000 tons eastbound) may be still insignificant compared with Chile’s total handling volumes. Nonetheless, this present picture clearly illustrates a promising possibility that Chile should pursue: its “gateway” function can expand further. To demonstrate this, Chile’s current position in the international distribution and transportation networks particularly with neighboring countries will be reviewed in following sections. 11.1.2 Macro-Region Andina “Macro-region Andina” is a notion proposed and pursued by authorities concerned in Region I. Without any definite boundaries, it roughly covers an area encompassing the southern part of Peru, most of Bolivia, northern part of Argentina, part of Paraguay, and the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul of Brazil. -

1 Baltazar Hernández Baltazar Hernández Biografía Baltazar Hernández Romero, pintor, acuarelista. Nació en Ñuble, Chile, el 8 de Agosto de 1924, y falleció en Chillán, Chile, el 13 de enero de 1997. En 1943 egresó de la Escuela Normal de Chillán. Ejerció la docencia en la asignatura de Artes Plásticas en la Enseñanza Secundaria, Normalista y Universitaria. Inició su formación artística con los profesores pintores Oscar Hernández, Armando Sánchez y Oscar Gacitúa . Más tarde realizó cursos de Arte y de Pedagogía en las escuelas de temporada de la Universidad de Chile, y de la Universidad de Concepción. En general su formación profesional y artística es autodidacta. Fue miembro de la Sociedad de Bellas Artes Tanagra , donde presidió varios periodos. Fue socio de la Asociación de pintores y escritores de Chile. EPM Group Strengthens Its Presence in Chile by Subscribing an Agreement for Purchasing Aguas De Antofagasta
Medellin, April 23, 2015 EPM Group strengthens its presence in Chile by subscribing an agreement for purchasing Aguas de Antofagasta The transaction is subject to approval by Empresa Concesionaria de Servicios Sanitarios S.A. (ECONSSA) Aguas de Antofagasta S.A. (ADASA) delivers its services in seven Chilean towns located in a dynamic and rapidly growing mining zone. The company owns the largest desalination plant in Latin America ADASA is considered as one of the most relevant and best-performing utilities in Chile. This is EPM Group's second investment in Chile, where it is already delivering services with the Los Cururos Wind Park Seeking to grow and expand sustainably in order to continue creating well-being for the community, EPM Group has subscribed an agreement for the purchase of 100% shareholding owned by Inversiones Punta de Rieles Limitada, an affiliate of Antofagasta PLC, in the Chilean company ADASA for approximately USD 965 million, so far the largest investment conducted by EPM Group abroad. In this regard, EPM's Chief Executive Officer and leader of EPM Group, Juan Esteban Calle Restrepo, indicated: "We are very pleased with the next arrival of ADASA to the economic group. This way we will add very relevant experience to continue advancing with our presence in the water and sanitation sector; we will also venture into the activities of sea-water potabilization and bulk water supply to large mining and industrial customers, fields where we see immense opportunities for EPM not only in Chile but also in the other Latin American countries where we are present.
