Foreword This collection of writings provides an intensive reading of dress fashions of royalty which intensified Portuguese political power over the Kingdom of Kotte. The royalties were at the top in the social strata eventually known to be the fashion creators of society. Their engagement in creating and practicing dress fashion prevailed from time immemorial. The author builds a sound dialogue within six chapters’ covering most areas of dress fashion by incorporating valid recorded historical data, variety of recorded visual formats cross checking each other, clarifying how the period signifies a turning point in the fashion history of Sri Lanka culminating with emerging novel dress features. This scholarly work is very much vital for university academia and fellow researches in the stream of Humanities and Social Sciences interested in historical dress fashions and usage of jewelry. Furthermore, the content leads the reader into a new perspective on the subject through a sound dialogue which has been narrated through validated recorded historical data, recorded historical visual information, and logical analysis with reference to scholars of the subject area. -

M. de Z. Wickremasinghe in 1890. A second and revised edition, in which I had the honour of taking part, was published by the Government of Ceylon in 1907. On that edition the present translation is based. As a few mistakes still occur in the revised edition, they have either been corrected in this translation or attention has been drawn to them. But this has been done as merely an expression of my own individual opinion, for which my co- workers in the revision are not responsible. W. F. G. Colombo, May 1908 Preface to the New Edition The Nikāya Saṅgrahaya, which was written in the Sinhala language in the 14th century A.D.,1 treats of the various sects that arose in Buddhism after the passing of its founder as they developed in India and later in Śrī Laṅkā, and how they were dealt with and the religion purified by the kings and great elders of old. Our author being a convinced Theravādin, and a strict adherent of that orthodoxy, who ascended to the leadership of the Saṅgha, carried out such a purification himself, and the book may have been written as a defence of that action, showing how it has historical precedents. -

FIELD In this article, I juxtapose the ways the “father of modern Sinhala drama,” John De Silva, and the Sinhala language reformer, Munidasa Cumaratunga, utilized music for different nationalist projects. First, I explore how De Silva created musicals that articulated Arya- Sinhala nationalism to support the Buddhist Revival. Second, I investigate how Cumar- atunga, who spearheaded the Hela-Sinhala movement, asserted that genuine Sinhala song should be rid of North Indian influence but full of lyrics composed in “pure” Sinhala. -

[email protected] ABSTRACT Sri Lanka, a Island situated at the southern tip of the Indian sub- continent processes a culture and tradition of over 2500 years. Therefore, the perception of colour in dress has been derived through inherited values, norms and customs, Thus, colour, dress and culture have been interwoven into the lives of the people of the Island.Fashion designing, the essential component that plays a vital role in the apparel industry at present, deserves a careful and comprehensive study. Creating new fashions is the key to product development in the industry. A new creation would not simply incubate unless it conforms to some underlying concepts.The objective of this research is to discuss cultural explanations for how people perceived colour and its affective meanings in dress. The selected study setting of the research is the Kandyan era of Sri Lanka (16th Century AD to 1815) where traditional perception of colour has changed with the influence of foreign cultures. The Kandyan era has continued with as living culture to the present day. The research was carried out by studying folklore, wall paintings, original dresses which depict the dress of the era, sketches of foreign diplomats, relevant to the subject. According to the cultural exploration on colour perception, it was found that people perceived colour in a common way although there were some differences in perception at individual level. -

King Vijaya (B.C. 543-504) and his successors (Source: A SHORT HISTORY OF LANKA by Humphry William Codrington) The traditional first king of Lanka is Vijaya. His grandmother, Suppadevi, according to the legend was the daughter of the king of Vanga (Bengal) by a princess of Kalinga (Orissa). She ran away from home and in the country of Lala or Lada, the modern Gujarat, mated with a lion (sinha); hence the names of her children and ultimately that of Sinhala, the designation of Lanka and of the Sinhala. At the age of sixteen her son Sinhabahu carried off his mother and his twin sister to the haunts of men; the lion in his search for his family ravaged the country, and for the sake of the reward offered by the king of Vanga was slain by his own son. The king dying at the time, Sinhabahu was elected as his successor, but abandoned Vanga and built the city of Sinhapura in his native country Lada. His son Prince Vijaya and his boon companions committed such outrages in his father's capital that the king was compelled by popular clamour to drive them forth. They set sail and, touching at Supparaka, a famous port on the west coast of India (Sopara, north of Bombay), ultimately arrived at Tambapanni. Vijaya is made to land at Tambapanni on the very day of Buddha's death. Here they found the country inhabited by Yakkhas or demons, and one of them Kuveni, entrapped Vijaya's followers, but was compelled by the prince to release them. -
