COLLECTION NUMBER VMM39 DATE(S) 1898-1952 PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION 12.5 cm of textual records ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY / BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Patrick Joseph Hickey was born in Ireland and emigrated to Newfoundland. He later moved to Victoria, British Columbia where he raised his family that included two sons, Richard Joseph and John David, and four daughters - Frances, Alice, May and Gertrude. While in British Columbia he worked for Canadian Pacific Navigation Co. (predecessor to the Canadian Pacific Railway Co.) on the BC coastal service route. During his maritime career he served on the following vessels: SS Transfer, as Master (1899) R.P. Rithet, as Master (1900) Princess Louise, as Master (1900) Beaver, as Master (1900) Princess Victoria, Master (1910-1911). Richard Joseph Hickey was born on September 8, 1891 in Vancouver, BC. He followed in his father’s steps by undertaking a maritime career and working for the Canadian Pacific Railway Co. on the BC Coast Steamship Service route and later the Ocean Steamship Service (Empress liners) deep-sea routes that plied Chinese and Japanese waters. Vessels that he served on and positions he held included: Princess Royal, Able Body Seaman and Quartermaster (1908-1909, 1912) SS Queen City, Quartermaster (1909-1910) Princess Victoria (1910-1912) Princess Beatrice (1912) Princess Patricia, 2nd mate (1912) Princess May, 3rd officer (1912-1913, 1914-1915) SS Joan, 1st mate (1913-1914) Princess Adelaide, 3rd officer (1914) Charmer, 2nd officer (1915-1916) Monteagle, 2nd officer (1916) Empress of Japan, 2nd and 1st officer (1916-1919, 1920-1921) SS Metheven, 2nd officer (1919-1920) Empress of Russia, 1st officer (1921-1922), Staff Captain (1935-1937) Empress of Asia, 1st and 2nd officer (1922-1925, 1926-1927) Empress of Canada, 1st officer (1925), Chief Officer/Staff Captain (1934-1935), Staff Captain (1937-1938) In 1921 Richard Hickey received his Master’s Certificate (for steamships only) and worked as Assistant Marine Superintendent on Canada’s east and west coasts until the end of his maritime career. He died on May 27, 1971 and was survived by wife Priscilla, son Richard John & daughter, Patricia June of Vancouver. Patrick Joseph Hickey - correspondence File consists of original and copies of hand-written and typescript correspondence and notes related to the operation of Canadian Pacific Navigation Company Ltd. vessels on which Richard Joseph Hickey served. Included are navigation records, correspondence relating to the loading and delivery of freight, letters of recommendation for employment, shipping casualties, changes in sailing times and docking arrangements, salaries and a copy of a Notice to Mariners, No. 35 of 1900, issued by the federal Department of Marine and Fisheries relating to shoals in the West Coast and updates on Japanese lighthouses issued on June 9, 1900. Patrick Joseph Hickey - Master's logbook File consists of a Master's logbook, containing hand-written notes from 1903 to 1906, covering sailings mainly of the Princess Victoria with some notes on the Princess Beatrice. Patrick Joseph Hickey - Reed's seamanship for second mates File consists of a worn copy of the publication "Reed's Seamanship for Second Mates" [Sunderland, Thomas Reed & Co., n.d.] 171 p. [plus a 32 page catalogue of other Reed publications]. Richard Joseph Hickey - Canadian passport and Continuous Certificate of Discharge log File consists of a Canadian passport in the name of Mr. Richard Joseph Hickey, issued in Ottawa on February 6, 1952. Also included is a Continuous Certificate of Discharge log, No. 242, for Seamen of Canadian Coasting and Inland Vessels, issued by the Department of Marine in Ottawa, covering the dates from 1920 to 1938. Richard Joseph Hickey - correspondence and maritime service records File consists of 18 Certificates of Discharge for R. J. Hickey, covering the period 1908 to 1920, all indicating very good character; and copies of 11 letters of recommendation for employment for Mr. R.J. Hickey, all with positive comments. Richard Joseph Hickey - Master's certificate File consists of the original Master's certificate issued in Ottawa on June 1, 1921 to Richard Joseph Hickey by the Minister of Marine and Fisheries of Canada.
