PRINCIPAL AND VICE- CHANCELLOR Richardson Hall, Room 351 Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada K7L 3N6 Tel 613.533.2200 Fax 613.533.6838 Principal’s Written Report Queen’s University Senate May 2014 Government Update Provincial: • A provincial election campaign is now in full swing, with election day called for Thursday, June 12. The election was triggered when the NDP did not support the budget brought in by the minority Liberal government. • As a result of the campaign activity, the public service is now acting in a caretaker capacity, which means that no new policy or program initiatives can be introduced. It also restricts ongoing work, consultations, announcements and events. This situation will continue until the swearing-in of a new or returning government. • This arrangement does have some implications for Queen’s, namely: o That while our Strategic Mandate Agreement has now been signed by both parties, no further action will be taken at this time; o That meeting requests from universities to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities have been turned down; do An that any provisions in the May 1 budget relevant to universities, such as the proposed pension framework, are now only considered as proposed, not approved. • I do make a point of offering to meet with candidates during a campaign to reinforce our priorities for the sector and for Queen’s. At this time, three of the four parties running in the riding of Kingston and the Islands have accepted my offer. Federal: • Together with several other U15 presidents and principals, I recently had an hour-long meeting with the Prime Minister. The major subject of discussion was the government’s funding of the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, a competition framework for which remains under development for the next few months. The PM reiterated the government’s priorities in the areas of knowledge, skills development, entrepreneurship and innovation, as well as in attracting international talent. As many senators will be aware, the PM and Mrs. Harper are about to become Queen’s parents, as their son Ben will be attending the Queen’s School of Business in September. • During U15 meetings the following day the executive heads discussed the advocacy agenda for the next budget cycle (with a federal election 12 to 16 months away), and the increased profile of Canadian research universities abroad. I will be leading a delegation of U15 executive heads on a mission to London, U.K, in October to meet with members of the Russell Group, the counterpart body of research-intensive universities in Britain. Awards and Honours: • On May 13, we honoured Queen’s faculty and staff members who have worked at Queen’s for 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years at our annual Celebration of Service dinner. 167 employees were recognized at this year’s event. I was particularly pleased to see a number of current and past Senators honoured. • Professor and Principal emeritus William Leggett has been recognized with the Elbert H. Ahlstrom Lifetime Achievement Award by the Early Life History Section of the American Fisheries Society. The award recognizes his contributions in fish early life history research, as well as his overall contribution to the fields of larval fish ecology and recruitment research, as well as for his service to the American Fisheries Society. • Dr. Robert Watts, an adjunct professor and fellow in the School of Policy Studies, was recently awarded the Indspire Award, formerly known as the National Aboriginal Achievement Award. The award recognizes Indigenous professionals and youth who have demonstrated outstanding achievement during their careers. • Dr. Christopher Bowie, an associate professor in the Department of Psychology, has been recognized with a national award for his program that helps people with mental illness function at work when they return after a leave of absence. He earned the Psychiatry Research Award from Pfizer Canada, Healthy Minds Canada and Sun Life Mutual for his Action-Based Cognitive Remediation program. He is one of only three researchers across Canada to earn the award this year. • Dr. Clarke Mackey (Film and Media) and Dr. Robert Morrison (English) have been awarded the Frank Knox Award for their outstanding commitment to teaching excellence. The award, which is handed out by the AMS, recognizes two Queen’s professors every year, and is the highest honour students can give their instructors. • PhD candidate Jeff MacCormack (Education) recently received the Christopher Knapper Award for Teacher Assistance Excellence from the AMS. The award, which celebrates an outstanding commitment to the education of students, allows students to recognize their teaching assistants. Advancement Report: • Donations to the Initiative Campaign now total $417.3 million (83%) against the $500 million goal, not including the recent $10 million and $5 million gifts to support the revitalization of Richardson Stadium. • Donations for the 2013-2014 fiscal year total $71.3 million, surpassing our fiscal goal of $60 million – a new record for Queen’s. • Recent gifts include $2.5 million to support School of Medicine Scholarships in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and $150K for a Mathematics and Statistical Teaching Research Fellowship in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Contributions to student assistance total $9 million this year, bringing the campaign total to over $54 million. I am proud of our successes to date, and appreciate the hard work of our deans, their staff and our volunteers, as well as the support of our benefactors. Other business: • After a four-year hiatus, the university’s internal newspaper, The Gazette, was re- launched on May 13 by University Communications. The re-launch is part of an ongoing revamp of internal communications at Queen’s, which includes a rebranded email to staff and faculty, Queen’s Gazette Today, and a new intranet system, MyQueensU, launching at the end of May. The Queen’s News Centre website will be redesigned and rebranded as Queen’s Gazette this fall. The spring edition of the Queen’s Alumni Review will also boast a new design. • Nominations for the Distinguished Service Awards will be accepted until May 30. Inaugurated by the University Council in 1974, the awards recognize the outstanding contributions of up to six members of the Queen’s community each year.
