The CR viewed itself as truly national undertaking, its passenger locomotives being painted in the national colours of red, white and blue, while its crest was based upon the royal arms of Scotland. The following list contains details of Caledonian station views in the Lens of Sutton Collection. Many of the photographs are historic postcard views of circa 1912, while most of the others were taken during the LMS era. For completeness, the list includes stations on the Dumbarton & Balloch (D&B), Dundee & Arbroath (D&A) and Kilsyth & Bonnybridge (K&B) joint lines. Introduction to the Estates This piece of writing attempts to tell some of the stories about six old estates that lay to the east of Port Glasgow in the nineteenth century and eventually got swallowed up in the town in the twentieth century. Initially the estates lay in Kilmacolm Parish before being incorporated by Port Glasgow as Port Glasgow moved eastwards. The stories will deal with the topics of brutal murders, infanticide, great wealth and great poverty, mainly in the times of the mid to late nineteenth century when Port Glasgow was rapidly changing as industry grew, and outside influences such as the railways made their mark. Three of the estates (Fyfe Park, Nether Auchenleck and Carnegie Park) were coastal estates belonging to gentlemen farmers. They stretched from the western boundary of Fyfe Park Estate at the Clune Brae Burn to the Carnegie Park Estate boundary at the east side of the present-day cemetery at Heggies Avenue. These smallish estates of about twenty-five acres or so were owned by men who made their living market gardening or rope making.

  • Tackling Transport-Related Barriers Low-Income Neighbourhoods
Tackling transport-related barriers to employment in low-income neighbourhoods by Richard Crisp, Ed Ferrari, Tony Gore, Steve Green, Lindsey McCarthy, Alasdair Rae, Kesia Reeve and Mark Stevens This report gives three actions that need to be taken to ensure public transport enables rather than constrains people who are returning to work. Tackling transport-related barriers to employment in low-income neighbourhoods Richard Crisp, Ed Ferrari, Tony Gore, Steve Green, Lindsey McCarthy, Alasdair Rae, Kesia Reeve and Mark Stevens Transport can be a major barrier to finding work; this report looks at the transport issues facing out-of-work residents in six low-income neighbourhoods across England and Scotland, and how these issues might be overcome. The report presents findings and recommendations from six case study areas: Harpurhey (Manchester), Hattersley (Tameside), Seacroft (Leeds), Dewsbury Moor (Kirklees), Port Glasgow (Inverclyde) and Castlemilk (Glasgow). We interviewed 79 residents across these areas to find out the length of time and distances that residents were willing and able to travel to work. We also considered the extent to which local transport systems were available, reliable and affordable to potential places of work. Our key finding is that public transport is all too often seen as something that constrains rather than enables a return to work, because of a lack of affordable and reliable transport that gets people to locations where there is suitable work. Actions Coordinated action by the UK Government, combined and local authorities, transport bodies and partner agencies is needed to make sure that: • 'Stronger' models of partnership or bus franchising (through the Bus Services Act 2017) improve the availability, reliability and affordability of public transport, to make it easier to access employment.

  • Port Glasgow Area
INTRODUCTION Local authorities are responsible for maintaining a register of all the known archaeological sites in their area. A small proportion of these are protected as Scheduled Monuments which are listed in a separate schedule, but many others merit protection for their regional or local importance. The records for all of these archaeology sites in Inverclyde were transferred from the West of Scotland Archaeology Service in 2013. Currently there are 634 recorded archaeology sites. This schedule contains details of all the sites within the Port Glasgow area. There are also schedules for Greenock, Gourock, Kilmacolm/Quarrier’s Village, Inverkip and Wemyss Bay. Each record sheet contains site details including the site name(s), grid reference, monument type, the date the site was first recorded, which parish it was located in, a location map, available background details and a Canmore reference number. Canmore is the online catalogue to Scotland’s archaeology, buildings and industrial and marine heritage. It can be accessed to carry out searches, through the Historic Environment Scotland website at: https://www.historicenvironment.scot/learn/learning-resources/canmore/ Anyone with details of potential archaeological sites in Inverclyde that they think could be worthy of investigation should contact Margaret Pickett from our Planning Policy team on 01475 712493, or send us an email to [email protected] ARCHAEOLOGY SITES IN PORT GLASGOW LOCATION CANMORE REFERENCE B Broadfield (Battery) 332046 Broadfield Hospital 75470

  • Strategic Greenbelt Review
Background Paper 4 Strategic Greenbelt Review Renfrewshire Local Development Plan January 2013 1. Introduction This paper is intended to set out the background to the strategic review of the Renfrewshire green belt, undertaken in 2012 as part of the preparation for the Renfrewshire Local Development Plan. It sets out the methodology of how the green belt was reviewed and the conclusions and recommendations that have been reached, that propose the release of a limited number of sites from the green belt for other uses. 2. Background 2.1 The Renfrewshire Local Plan was adopted in March 2006. The Local Plan did not propose any alteration to the green belt boundary and the Scottish Government Inquiry Reporter confirmed this assessment. 2.2 As part of the development plan process there is regular monitoring and assessment of the demand for development land. It is considered that, although there is an adequate supply of development land within Renfrewshire, there needs to be an adequate range and choice of sites across the area to deliver the optimistic growth strategy as set out in the Glasgow and the Clyde Valley Strategic Development Plan. 2.3 This review has been prepared to demonstrate that the boundary of the green belt has continued relevance, however, there may be sites on the edge of existing settlements which could facilitate growth in the area, if required. This issue will be explored through this strategic green belt review, together with the identification of potential locations to enhance the green network. 3.
