West Nile virus ecology has yet to be rigorously investigated in the Caribbean Basin. We identified a transmission focus in Puerto Barrios, Guatemala, and established systematic monitoring of avian abundance and infec- tion, seroconversions in domestic poultry, and viral infections in mosquitoes. West Nile virus transmission was detected annually between May and October from 2005 to 2008. High temperature and low rainfall enhanced the probability of chicken seroconversions, which occurred in both urban and rural sites. West Nile virus was isolated from Culex quinquefasciatus and to a lesser extent, from Culex mollis/Culex inflictus, but not from the most abundant Culex mosquito, Culex nigripalpus. A calculation that combined avian abundance, seroprevalence, and vertebrate reservoir competence suggested that great-tailed grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus) is the major amplifying host in this ecosystem. -

Only females incubated and brooded, but both adults built the nests, fed the nestlings, and removed their faecal sacs. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract We investigated if passerine birds act as important predators of small vertebrates within the Neotropics. We surveyed published studies on bird diets, and information on labels of museum specimens, compiling data on the contents of 5,221 stomachs. Eighteen samples (0.3%) presented evidence of predation on vertebrates. Our bibliographic survey also provided records of 203 passerine species preying upon vertebrates, mainly frogs and lizards. Our data suggest that vertebrate predation by passerines is relatively uncommon in the Neotropics and not characteristic of any family. On the other hand, although rare, the ability to prey on vertebrates seems to be widely distributed among Neotropical passerines, which may respond opportunistically to the stimulus of a potential food item. -

The Feeding Ecology of Tanagers and Honeycreepers in Trinidad

S•ow Dtmi•G the last 131/2months of our 41/2-years' residence in Trinidad (August 1960 to September 1961) we kept systematicrecords of the feedingbehavior of the commonertanagers and honeycreepers.By this time, besidesknowing the bird specieswell, we had learned to identify most of the trees and shrubs,particularly those in the northern mountain range where we lived. The correct systematictreatment of the tanagersand honeycreepersis still uncertain. Formerly they were separated as Thraupidae and Coerebidae,but Beecher (1951) argued that the Coerebidaeare a hetero- geneousgroup and recommendedplacing Coereba and Conirostrumwith the Parulidaeand the otherswith the Thraupidae. Whatevertheir correct systematicarrangement, they form a natural ecologicalgroup of small to medium-sized birds of wooded habitats that take a mixed diet of insects and fruit, with somenectar. The tanagersare structurally unspecialized as a group, but the honeycreepersin beak and tongue are to some extent specializedfor nectar-eating. As fruit-eaters,both tanagersand honey- creeperstypically exploit the smaller, succulent fruits of trees, shrubs, and vines,and are ecologicallyquite distinct from the larger, specialized fruit-eating birds that exploit the larger and more nutritious fruits of palms,Lauraceae, Burseraceae, and someother tree families (Snow, 1971). INTRODUCTION Not everyone is fortunate enough to visit Peru; a marvelous country that boasts a huge country bird list, which is second only to Colombia. Unlike our usual set departure, we started out with a daylong extension to Lomas de Lachay first, before starting out on the usual itinerary for the main tour. The first site of the main tour was Huacarpay Lake, near the beautiful Andean city of Cusco (accessed after a short flight from Lima). This gave us a few endemic species like Bearded Mountaineer and Rusty-fronted Canastero; along with other less local species like Many-colored Rush-tyrant, Plumbeous Rail, Puna Teal, Andean Negrito and Puna Ibis. The following day we birded along the road towards Manu where we picked up birds like Peruvian Sierra-Finch, Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch, Spot-winged Pigeon, and a beautiful Peruvian endemic in the form of Creamy-crested Spinetail. We also saw Yungas Pygmy-Owl, Black-faced Ibis, Hooded and Scarlet-bellied Mountain- Tanagers, Red-crested Cotinga and the gorgeous Grass-green Tanager. -

Tropical Birding Trip Report Colombia, February-March 2016 Colombia February 25th to March 10th, 2016 TOUR LEADER: Nick Athanas Report and photos by Nick Athanas White-whiskered Spinetail – bird of the trip! It had been a while since I had guided a Colombia trip, and I had forgotten how neat the birds were! This two week customized tour combined a Northern Colombia trip with some of the best sites in Central Colombia. The weather was beautiful, the birds were spectacular and cooperative, and most importantly we had a fun and friendly group; we all had a blast. Custom trips are a great option for groups of friends that like to travel together, and it really worked well this time. I really love that White-whiskered Spinetail was voted “bird of the trip” – it’s the only time I can remember a spinetail winning that honor – it’s an often unappreciated group, but this one is really special and we had point-blank views. Other favorites were Golden-winged Sparrow, Russet-throated Puffbird, Scarlet Ibis, Turquoise Dacnis, Blue-billed Curassow, Red-bellied Grackle, Sword-billed Hummer, Crested Owl, Chestnut Piculet, Striped Manakin, and shockingly, even a couple of tapaculos, which impressed some by showing amazingly well. We started off in the “megapolis” of Bogotá, which served as our base for the first few nights as we made day trips to nearby sites in the eastern cordillera of the Andes.
