08 Balbir (167-182) 29-01-2008 16:39 Pagina 167 NALINI BALBIR COLETTE CAILLAT (1921-2007) 1 Prof. Dr. Mrs Colette Caillat passed away on her eighty-sixth birthday, 15th January 2007. Her personality and career have already been described in several obituaries of varying length, published or in the press 2. But how could it be possible not to remember her in the Indologica Taurinensia, considering how close she had become to her Turin colleagues over the years, especially Prof. Dr. Oscar Botto and Dr. Mrs. Irma Piovano – the founders and soul of this journal and of the CESMEO? It was in Turin that, as early as 1970, Colette Caillat presented a lecture entitled Pour une nouvelle grammaire du pali, which was published as a booklet in the University series. The modest size of this publication should not disguise its importance. In this man- ifesto the author speaks with conviction in favour of a real linguistic approach to Middle Indian in which phonetics are not the only means 1. I am thankful to Dr. Peter Skilling for reading through this text and improving its style. 2. • Visual and Conceptual Links Between Jaina Cosmological, Mythological and Ritual Instruments*
International Journal of Jaina Studies (Online) Vol. 6, No. 1 (2010) 1-20 VISUAL AND CONCEPTUAL LINKS BETWEEN JAINA COSMOLOGICAL, MYTHOLOGICAL AND RITUAL INSTRUMENTS* Julia A. B. Hegewald Introduction Jainism has developed a distinct iconography and produced a wealth of additional religious symbols, images and ritual instruments not employed or venerated by the followers of other religious groups in the subcontinent. Jaina temples throughout India display cosmological representations, which are seen as maps and guides to enlightenment and are derived from a highly-developed Jaina cosmographical system.1 Other topics have been supplied by Jaina mythology, which provides vivid descriptions of legendary constructs, some of which have been translated into physical form in Jaina art and architecture. Based on a discrete form of temple ritual and the veneration of statues, specific ritual devices too have been created over time to suit and aid the complex Jaina religious ceremonial. This paper will analyse three distinct Jaina religious items: the meru, the samavasaraṇa and the siṁhāsana. The meru is a cosmological element, the samavasaraṇa largely a mythological construction, and the siṁhāsana a ritual instrument. In their specific shapes, all three items are unique to Jainism.2 The three * This paper was presented at the Jaina Studies Workshop entitled “Jaina Doctrines and Dialogues” at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, in 2004. Since submitting the manuscript of this article for publication to the editor for an edited book in 2004, an article examining related issues has been published by the author in 2007. 1 For a detailed analysis of artistic and architectural representations of Jaina cosmology, see Hegewald (2000: 3-42; 2009: 50-61).

Even word ahiihsu not found in the Vedas and the Brahmanas; it is found, for the first time, 1 in the Upanisad (Cog. 3.17.4) The religion of the Vedas mainly consisted of the sacrifices; and (here were many types of the Vedic sacrifices which could not be performed without the killing of animals. Aesthetics of Sovereignty: The Poetic and Material Worlds of Medieval Jainism Abstract "Aesthetics of Sovereignty" explores how premodern religious communities employed narrative as a site to imagine ideal political worlds in ways that exceeded the capacity of formal philosophical and politico- theoretical discourse. Taking the Digambara Jain community of the ninth and tenth-century western Deccan as my primary focus, I argue that Jains theorized, modeled, and continually revised what it meant to be both a king and a Jain through literary and material improvisations with the narrative of the first Tīrthaṅkara Ādinātha (a genre known as the Ādipurāṇa). From the proposition that worldly sovereignty culminates in renunciation in Jinasēna’s Ādipurāṇa (c. 860 C.E.) and the devolution of courtly erotic love into devotional affect in Pampa’s Ādipurāṇaṃ (941 C.E.), to the vision of an ideal king as Jain devotee in the Cāvuṇḍarāya Purāṇaṃ (978 C.E.), my dissertation tracks shifting Jain experiments with language, genre, and artistic mediums that reflect broader attempts to imagine ideal worlds structured around perfected notions of worldly and spiritual sovereignty.
