Herbert Howells' a Garland for De La Mare Twelve Songs for Voice
BLOZAN, BENJAMIN C., D.M.A. Herbert Howells’ A Garland for de la Mare Twelve Songs for Voice and Piano: Contexts for Performance (2013) Directed by Dr. James Douglass. 166 pp. Because British composer Herbert Howells (1892-1983) decided in mid-career to concentrate his creative energies upon Anglican liturgical music, his many notable contributions to secular genres are often overlooked. This is certainly the case for A Garland for de la Mare, a collection of twelve songs for voice and piano on poems by Howells’ longtime friend Walter de la Mare (1873-1956), a work nearly unknown in the United States. Its posthumous publication in 1995 also contributed to its failure to enter the art song canon. The neglect suffered by this commemorative work—held in high esteem by all writers who have assessed it—is unfortunate and unwarranted. Howells and de la Mare are both ubiquitously regarded as master craftsmen in their respective disciplines. Additionally, they share a remarkable compatibility between musical and poetic languages which is vividly highlighted in the songs in Garland. The set gains additional significance by containing the only songs Howells worked on past 1934. Though early versions of several of the songs first appeared in 1919, the bulk of Howells’ effort occurred much later in the mid-50s (surrounding de la Mare’s death) and in the years leading up to the centenary of the poet’s birth in 1973. As such, they display a confidence and economy indicative of a composer fully in possession of his creative voice. This study aims to combat Garland’s obscurity by inspiring interest in informed performances of the songs therein. -

Andrew Lloyd Webber English Musical Theater Composer (1948-) Andrew Lloyd Webber was born in Kensington, London, United Kingdom, on March 22, 1948. He is the oldest son of William Lloyd Webber and Jean Hermione. He has a younger brother named Julian Lloyd Webber. He comes from a musical family. His father was a director of the London College of Music, an organist, and a composer. His mother was a violinist and a piano teacher, and his brother is a highly celebrated solo cellist. Andrew displayed his talents when he was just a toddler. At the age of three, he played the piano, the violin, and the French horn. By six years of age, he started to write his own music. At age nine, he composed six short pieces called The Toy Theatre Suite, which were published in Music Teacher Magazine. Andrew also produced little dramas in a toy theater that he built himself. His brother Julian and his Aunt Viola helped out with his mini-theater productions. When Andrew Lloyd Webber was 17, Tim Rice sent him a letter, and this began a long collaboration between the two playwrights. Written in 1965, their first work was The Likes of Us, which wasn't performed until 2005. Webber and Rice went on to write many successful produc- tions, such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, and Cricket. In the 1980's, Webber went on to write two of his best known works, Cats and Phantom of the Opera. Cats was his longest-running show in both New York and London. -

Rather than pursue Tim’s ambitions to write rock or pop songs they turned their attention to Andrew’s obsession—musical theatre. Their first collaboration (lyrics by Tim, music by Andrew) was an unsuccessful show based on the life of Dr. Barnardo, the Victorian philanthropist, The Likes Of Us. Their next three works together JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING were much more successful—Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. Tim has since worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast), Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (Chess) and most recently, Stuart Brayson (From Here To Eternity). When Sunset Boulevard joined School of Rock—The Musical, Cats and Phantom on Broadway in February 2017 he became the only person to equal the record set in 1953 by Rodgers and Hammerstein with four shows running concurrently. As well as The Phantom Of The Opera and Cats his productions include the groundbreaking Bombay Dreams, which introduced the double Oscar-winning Bollywood composer AR Rahman to the Western stage. As a composer and producer, Lloyd Webber is one of an elite group of artists to have achieved EGOT status by receiving an Emmy, four Grammys including Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Requiem, his setting of the Latin Requiem mass, an Oscar and eight Tony Awards including the 2018 Special Tony for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. Additionally, he has been honored with seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, the Praemium Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre, a BASCA Fellowship, and the Kennedy Center Honor.
