BIRDING ABROAD LIMITED UZBEKISTAN 5 – 12 JUNE 2019 - TRIP REPORT To the south-west of Kazakhstan lies Uzbekistan, a Central Asian country founded during the glory days of the Great Silk Road and boasting a colourful cultural heritage. Further it enjoys a diverse range of landscapes which results in a varied birdlife, including several speciality birds not found in neighbouring countries. Foremost amongst these is the enigmatic Turkestan (Pander’s) Ground-jay, a very localised desert resident, whilst other notable species include Hume’s Lark, Azure Tit (of the yellow-breasted variety), Upcher’s and Menetries’s Warbler. Uzbekistan was once at the cross-roads of commercial developments in Central Asia, with Silk Road routes passing through the ancient cities of Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara. Rich in historical sites, the architectural wonders of these ancient cities remains largely intact and attracts large numbers of tourists to witness their splendours. We had set aside some time within our schedule to visit the highlights of these fabulous places. Our flight passed smoothly and after landing safely in Tashkent, we were greeted by representatives from the ground agency who kindly welcomed us to Uzbekistan. Accompanied by our bird guide Timor, we headed directly to the massive Hotel Uzbekistan in downtown Tashkent, where we managed a few hours’ sleep. Thursday 6 June – after a quick breakfast we were soon boarding a new and comfortable coach, travelling some 90 kms north-east to Beldersai, a village surrounded by rolling and wooded hills of the Chatkal Range. Our main quarry for the morning was the Rufous-naped Tit, a localised resident of coniferous and juniper forests from Central Asia to the north-west Himalaya. -

Satoh2 1Nihon University, Japan 2Nihon Harbor Consultants Ltd., Japan Abstract Okinawa Prefecture marked the 40th anniversary of its reversion to Japanese sovereignty from US control in 2012. Such isolated islands are almost under the environment separated by the mainland and the sea, so that they have the economic differences from the mainland and some policies for being active isolated islands are taken. It is necessary to promote economical measures in order to increase the prosperity of isolated islands through initiatives involving tourism, fisheries, manufacturing, etc. In this study, Ishigaki Island was considered as an example of such an isolated island. Ishigaki Island is located to the west of the main islands of Okinawa and the second-largest island of the Yaeyama Island group. Ishigaki Island falls under the jurisdiction of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan’s southernmost prefecture, which is situated approximately half-way between Kyushu and Taiwan. Both islands belong to the Ryukyu Archipelago, which consists of more than 100 islands extending over an area of 1,000 km from Kyushu (the southwesternmost of Japan’s four main islands) to Taiwan in the south. Located between China and mainland Japan, Ishigaki Island has been culturally influenced by both countries. Much of the island and the surrounding ocean are protected as part of Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park. Ishigaki Airport, built in 1943, is the largest airport in the Yaeyama Island group. The runway and air security facilities were improved in accordance with passenger demand for larger aircraft, and the airport became a tentative jet airport in May 1979. -

The objective of the project was to grasp the current state of how people are engaged in the traditional ways of weaving, dyeing and making cloth in the Ryukyu Islands.1 Throughout the project, we came to think it important to understand two points in order to see the direction of those who are engaged in manufacturing textiles in the Ryukyu Islands. The points are: the diversification in ways of engaging in traditional cloth making; and the importance of multi-generational relationship in sustaining traditional cloth making. -

Study on Okinawa’s Development Experience in Public Health and Medical Sector December 2000 Institute for International Cooperation Japan International Cooperation Agency I I C Ｊ Ｒ 00-56 PREFACE Recent years have seen a new emphasis on "people-oriented development" through aid in the social development field. Cooperation in the public health and medical sector is becoming increasingly important within this context because of its contributions to physical well-being, which is the basis from which all human activities proceed. Nonetheless, infectious diseases that were long ago eradicated in developed countries are still rampant in developing countries, as are HIV/AIDS and other new diseases. Even those diseases that can be prevented or treated claim precious lives on a daily basis because of inappropriate education and medical care. The government of developing countries, donors, NGOs, and other organizations continue to work to rectify this situation and improve the health care levels of people in developing countries. Japan, as one of the world's leading donor countries, is expected both to improve the quality of its own aid and to take a leadership role in this sector. To help us in this effort, we referred to the history of health and medical care in postwar Okinawa Prefecture. Okinawa's experiences during postwar reconstruction contain many lessons that can be put to use in improving the quality of aid made available to developing countries. In the times immediately following World War II, the people in Okinawa were constantly threatened with contagion and disease due to a lack of medical facilities and personnel, including doctors. -

It features a bright yellow sun, from which bright strokes of color radiate, and a series of paper cranes. The background of the image is made up of straight strokes of color in red, pink, orange, and varying shades of blue and violet, much like those found in a sunrise or sunset. The lines are not harsh lines and blend together in places. The lines move from cool to more warm tones as they progress outward from the sun to the edges of the painting. The strokes all radiate from a bright yellow circle surrounded by red beads, found at the bottom right corner of the painting. Attached to the canvas, progressing in a line from the sun to the middle of the left edge, is a series of 16 paper cranes. The cranes are made of various patterned papers, with no more than two being identical. They appear similar in size, no more than an inch or two in height. Willow Bascom Off the Couch! The scene first appears to be in an indoor setting similar to a living room, although includes elements that are typically found in the natural world. A Bird’s Eye View of Okinawa by HIH Princess Takamado, Honorary President ne of the most beautiful of the many O“must visit” places in Japan is the Ryukyu Archipelago. These islands are an absolute treasure trove of cultural, scenic and environmental discoveries, and the local people are known for their warmth and welcoming nature. Ikebana International is delighted to be able to host the 2017 World Convention in Okinawa, and I look forward to welcoming those of you who will be joining us then. 13 Kagoshima Kagoshima pref. Those who are interested in flowers are generally interested in the environment. In many cultures, flowers and birds go together, and so, Osumi Islands Tanega too, in my case. As well as being the Honorary President of Ikebana International, I am also the Yaku Honorary President of BirdLife International, a worldwide conservation partnership based in Cambridge, UK, and representing approximately 120 countries or territories. In this article, I Tokara Islands would like introduce to you some of the birds of Okinawa Island as well as the other islands in the Ryukyu Archipelago and, in so doing, to give you Amami a sense of the rich ecosystem of the area. Amami Islands Kikaiga One Archipelago, Six Island Tokuno Groups The Ryukyu Archipelago is a chain of islands Okinawa pref. Okino Erabu that stretches southwest in an arc from Kyushu (Nansei-shoto) to Chinese Taiwan. Also called the Nansei Islands, the archipelago consists of over 100 islands. Administratively, the island groups of Kume Okinawa Naha Osumi, Tokara and Amami are part of Kagoshima Prefecture, whilst the island groups Ryukyu Archipelago of Okinawa, Sakishima (consisting of Miyako Okinawa Islands and Yaeyama Islands), Yonaguni and Daito are part of Okinawa Prefecture. -

Acutis1, Maria Caramelli1, Cristina Casalone1 & Cristiano Corona1 Since 2005, two cases of natural bovine spongiform encephalopathies (BSE) have been reported in goats. Furthermore, experimental transmissions of classical (C-BSE) and atypical (L-BSE) forms of BSE in goats were also reported. To minimize further spreading of prion diseases in small ruminants the development of a highly sensitive and specifc test for ante-mortem detection of infected animals would be of great value. Recent studies reported high diagnostic value of a second generation of cerebrospinal fuid (CSF) Real-Time Quaking-Induced Conversion (RT-QuIC) assay across a wide spectrum of human prions. Here, we applied this improved QuIC (IQ-CSF) for highly efcient detection of TSEs prion protein in goat cerebrospinal fuid. IQ-CSF sensitivity and specifcity were evaluated on CSF samples collected at disease endpoint from goats naturally and experimentally infected with scrapie or bovine isolates of C-BSE and L-BSE, respectively. Next, CSF samples collected from L-BSE infected goats during pre-symptomatic stage were also analysed. PrPL-BSE associated seeding activity was detected at early time points after experimental inoculation, with an average time of 439 days before clinical symptoms appeared. -

On Beauty and Being Just ELAINE SCARRY The Tanner Lectures on Human Values Delivered at Yale University March 25 and 26, 1998 Elaine Scarry is Walter M. Cabot Professor of Aes- thetics and the General Theory of Value in the department of English at Harvard University. She was educated at Chatham College and at the University of Connecticut, where she received her Ph.D. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has been a fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and a senior fellow at the Getty Research Insti- tute. She is also the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship. Her many published works include Dreaming By the Book (1999), Resisting Representation (1994), Literature and the Body: Essays on Populations and Persons (1988), and The Body in Pain: The Making and Unmaking of the World (1985). I. ON BEAUTY AND BEING WRONG What is the felt experience of cognition at the moment one stands in the presence of a beautiful boy or šower or bird? It seems to in- cite, even to require, the act of replication. Wittgenstein says that when the eye sees something beautiful, the hand wants to draw it. Beauty brings copies of itself into being. It makes us draw it, take photographs of it, or describe it to other people. Sometimes it gives rise to exact replication and other times to resemblances and still other times to things whose connection to the original site of inspiration is unrecognizable. Try to predict what will happen. Then add a few drops of clear dish soap between the color spots. What a beautiful surprise!!!! Try it with blue and red food coloring. Have everyone wear something blue. -
