[email protected] • www.janusfilms.com “No one sees anything. Ever. They watch, but they don’t understand.” So observes Connie Nielsen in Olivier Assayas’s hallucinatory, globe-spanning demonlover, a postmodern neonoir thriller and media critique in which nothing—not even the film itself—is what it appears to be. Nielsen plays Diane de Monx, a Volf Corporation executive turned spy for rival Mangatronics in the companies’ battle over the lucrative market of internet adult animation. But Diane may not be the only player at Volf with a hidden agenda: both romantic interest Hervé (Charles Berling) and office enemy Elise (Chloë Sevigny) seem to know her secret and can easily use it against her for their own purposes. As the stakes grow higher and Diane ventures into deadlier territory, and as Sonic Youth’s score pulses, Assayas explores the connections between multinational businesses and extreme underground media as well as the many ways twenty-first-century reality increasingly resembles violent, disorienting fiction. We enter a stunning, bourgeois mansion house: the home of the wealthy Recchi family. The families are gathering for a birthday dinner in honor of the patriarchal figure of Edoardo Recchi Sr. We are introduced to Emma, the stylish head of the household who is overseeing arrangements with the servants. With his health in a poor state, Edoardo Sr is preparing to hand over the reigns to the Recchi textile business. It seems a foregone conclusion when Edoardo Sr announces that he will be handing over to his son Tancredi. However, when he tells them that his grandson Edoardo Jr (Edo), Emma & Tancredi’s son, will have joint control there is a ripple of surprise at the dinner table. Gianluca, Edo’s brother is left out of the deal. Later on, a young man, Antonio, arrives at the house to deliver a cake to Edo. Having beaten him in a race earlier that day, the chef has brought a consolation present. Emma is introduced to him and thinks nothing more of the encounter.

Now she is being asked to step into the other role, that of the older Helena. She departs with her assistant (Kristen Stewart) to rehearse in Sils Maria; a remote region of the Alps. A young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal (Chloë Grace Moretz) is to take on the role of Sigrid, and Maria finds herself on the other side of the mirror, face to face with an ambiguously charming woman who is, in essence, an unsettling reflection of herself. Selena, Alain’s wife, a famous stage actress, is of the opposite opinion. DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT Our world keeps changing. It always has been. The challenge is our ability to keep an eye on that flux and to understand what is truly at stake in order to adapt, or not. After all, this is what politics and opinions are about. The digitalization of our world and its reconfiguration into algorithms is the modern vector of a change that confuses and overwhelms us. Digital economy infriges rules and often laws. Moreover it questions what seemed solid and granted in society. Yet, it dissolves on mere contact. Non-Fiction does not attempt to analyze workings of this new economy, but rather to observe how those questions shake us, personally, emotionally, and sometimes humorously. OLIVIER ASSAYAS (DIRECTOR) Born in Paris on January 25th 1955, Olivier Assayas started out as a painter and graphic designer.

(Paolo Mereghetti).

  • Proximity and Distance in Olivier Assayas' 'Doubles Vies' ('Non-Fiction')
« Collusion, Not Collision » ? – Proximity and Distance in Olivier Assayas’ 'Doubles vies' ('Non-Fiction') — Photogénie — Cinea 22/09/2020 09:27 (https://cinea.be/) « Collusion, Not Collision » ? – Proximity and Distance in Olivier Assayas’ ‘Doubles vies’ (‘Non-Fiction’) Doubles vies (Olivier Assayas, 2018) Aging, or more specifically how to cope with aging, seems to have taken center stage in Olivier Assayas’ oeuvre. Both in Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) and Personal Shopper (2016), the director explores the limits of human life and its impermanence. In Clouds of 1 maart 2019 Sils Maria, a middle-aged actress, Maria (played by Juliette Binoche), struggles with her Steff Nellis on-stage portrayal of an older woman (Helena) who falls in love with her youthful assistant (Sigrid), mainly because Maria took on Sigrid’s part when she was younger. In Personal Shopper, Kirsten Stewart is even more hooked to her phone than to her iPad in Clouds of Sils Maria [aside: one could read the title as a reference to the virtual cloud] — in which she plays Maria’s real life youthful assistant —, haunted by her deceased twin brother through text messages. Now, Doubles vies (2018, know internationally as Non- Fiction) depicts a group of (almost) middle-aged friends and colleagues that try to handle the challenges of everyday life in a world driven by digitalization. Doubles vies features two couples who are intertwined not only through work and ‘friendship’ but through an extramarital affair as well. Alain (Guillaume Canet), a literary editor, refuses to publish Léonard’s latest novel although he used to publish every single one of his books.
