Reef Fish Spawning Aggregations in Aceh, Sumatra: Local Knowledge of Occurrence and Status Authors: Campbell S.J., Mukmunin, A., Prasetia, R The Wildlife Conservation Society, Indonesian Marine Program, Jalan Pangrango 8, Bogor 16141, Indonesia Reef Fish Spawning Aggregations (FSA) are critical in the life cycle of the fishes that use this reproductive strategy as sources of larvae, but are also highly vulnerable to over exploitation. With the exception of the Komodo (Pet et al. 2005) little if any research has been focused on FSAs in Indonesia. Interview surveys were conducted among fishing communities on the island of Weh in northern Aceh in order to determine the level of awareness of FSAs among fishers; which reef fish species form FSAs; sites of aggregation formation; seasonal patterns; and to assess fishing pressure on and status of FSAs. Results show that many fishers possess reliable knowledge of spawning areas, species and times. Possible FSAs were reported from a number of areas on Weh island inside and outside protected areas. Of the 47 species of fish mentioned by respondents, we conclude that six species are very likely to form spawning aggregations in marine waters of Weh island. All six species were mentioned by more than 10 fishers, and included Bolbometopoton muricatum (Scaridae: Bumpheaded parrotfish), Cepahpholis miniata (Serranidae: Coral grouper) Variola louti (Serranidae: Yellow Edged Lyretail), Cheilinus undulatas (Labridae: Napolean wrasse), Thunnus albacares (Yellow fin tuna) and Caranx lugubris (Carangidae: Black Jack Trevally). FSAs in Aceh were areas targeted by fishers, although many were inside existing marine protected areas where prohibitions on netting from boats are in place. -

Being built for speed, Caranx lugubris have a steep sloping head with a body that tapers down to a very narrow tail (Lin and Shao, 1999). The colour of the body and head are almost uniformly greyish-brown to black, they have a deeply forked tail (Fig. 1), and the average body length is around 70cm (Humann, 1989). The teeth of the upper jaw include strong canines, and there are about 8 upper and 18-21 lower gill-rakers on the gill arches. DISTRIBUTION. Caranx lugubris is widely distributed in tropical waters worldwide (Fig. 2), with a circumtropical distribution (Smith-Vaniz, 1986). This includes the waters of the Indian Ocean, Pacific, the Atlantic including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean (Smith-Vaniz et al., 2015). The standard length is compared with specimens caught from the coasts of Lacadives, Okinawa, Easter Island and Taiwan. Twenty-four cross bred weaner (8 weeks old) rabbits comprising twelve each of bucks and does were randomly allocated according to sex and feed supplement (conventional anticoccidia drug and garlic) in a 2x2 factorial arrangement. Data were collected on growth performance, faecal microbial population and carcass yield and analysed using ANOVA. Result showed that neither sex nor feed supplement had significant (P>0.05) effect on the growth performance of weaner rabbits. Coccidial load was progressively and completely eliminated in bucks and does from the baseline population of 1680epg and 600epg, respectively with rabbits fed diet supplemented with garlic. Also, does fed diet supplemented with commercial coccidiostat had complete coccidial load elimination from 5200epg at 8th week to the 16th week. Helminthic load (3800epg) recorded with bucks fed diet supplemented with garlic at the beginning of study were totally eliminated at the end of the study (56d). -

An annotated list of the 63 species in 23 genera of carangid fishes known from Australian waters is presented. Included in these 63 are eight endemic species, eight new Australian records (Alepes vari, Carangoides equula, C. plagiotaenia, C. talamparoides, Caranx lugubris, Decapterus kurroides, D. tabl and Seriola rivoliana) and a new species in the genus Alepes. A generic key and specific keys to Alectis, Alepes, Carangoides, Scomberoides, Selar, Ulua and Uraspis are given. The systematics of the 32 Australian species of Alectis, Alepes, Atule, Carangoides, "Caranx", Elagatis, Gnathanodon,Megalaspis,Pantolabus, Scomberoides, Selar, Selaroides, Seriolina, Ulua and Uraspis are covered in detail. For each species a recommended common name, other common names, Australian secondary synonymy, diagnosis, colour notes, description, comparison with other species, maximum recorded size, ecological notes and distribution are given. Anal fin with 2 spines (embedded in larger ones) followed by 1 spine and 18-20 rays. Gill rakers lower limb first gill arch 12-17, excluding rudiments. Anterior rays long and filamentous injuveniles. Body deep and compressed. Forehead rounded. Colour: Silvery, with touch of metallic blue dorsally. Juveniles with 5 dark bars on body. Habitat and Biology: Adults solitary in coastal waters to depths of 100 m. Young usually pelagic and drifting. Feeds mainly on sedentary crustaceans. Distribution: Circumtropical. Remarks: The similar A. indicus also occurs in the Indian Ocean. RANDALL,2 AND ALFREDO CEA3 ABSTRACT Stomach contents of 42 species in 25 familes of Easter Island shore fishes were examined in comparative terms to determine prey items and feeding behavior at this isolated island outpost in the southeastern Pacific. The island’s impoverished marine fauna and flora have resulted in considerable dietary overlap among the inshore fishes. Some endemic species appear to feed mainly on endemic invertebrates. Some prey species which were found in the fish stomachs, such as the stomatopodOdontodactylus hawaiiensis, the pandalid shrimp Plesionika edwardsi, and several tiny molluscs were previously unrecorded for the island. INTRODUCTION Easter Island (Rapa Nui) lies 3750 km west of the South American continent and 2250 km. East of the Pitcairn Islands. This island represents the most isolated landfall in the South Pacific Ocean along with its small rocky neighbor Salas y Gómez I. 415 km to the east. Although Easter Island is often regarded as part of the Indo-Pacific region, and most of its fauna consist of tropical species (in the case of shore fishes, 32.5%), it lies outside the 20° isotherm (Wells 1957) where seawater temperature and insolation are below that required for the development of structural coral reefs; water temperature can undergo interannual drops unfavorable to tropical organisms and may produce mass mortalities of corals (Wellington et al., 2001).
