Event Operations Internship AAU Junior Olympic Games Operations Intern, AAU Junior Olympic Games The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is a multi-sport youth organization with millions of athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers who participate in 36 sports. The AAU Junior Olympic Games is the premier event of the AAU program and is the largest, multi-sports youth event in the country. Over a 2-week period, over 15,000 athletes participate in 25 sports. The 2008 AAU Junior Olympic Games will be held in Detroit, Michigan from July 23 to August 2. The Operations Intern will assist with a variety of projects with the coordination of the AAU Junior Olympic Games. Overview • Duration of Internship is May through mid-August • Intern will work at the AAU National Headquarters located in Lake Buena Vista, Florida near Walt Disney World Resort • Intern must be available to travel to Detroit, Michigan from July 23 to August 2. Travel, housing and per diem are provided during the event. • Internship provides a multitude of event management and operations experience Description • Assist in the daily planning, logistics and operations of the event • Handle requests for entry materials • Process entries for specific sports • Work with National Sport Chairs in conjunction with their specific sport needs and to develop operations plans • Assist with the travel and housing arrangements for all AAU officials and staff • Ordering of all plaques, ribbons, trophies and other awards for each sport • Provide support in the coordination of the Celebration of Athletes (Opening Ceremony) • Onsite logistics, trouble shooting, etc. during the event • Other duties as assigned. Requirements • Must be organized and able to work through a project with little supervision. • Strong communication skills both verbal and written are required. • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and having some knowledge of Access. • Must be able to work under pressure and meet timely deadlines. • Must have proficient typing skills Please submit resume to: Jennifer Miles Internship Program Coordinator AAU National Headquarters P.O. Invitational meets can deviate from these rules as long as exceptions are defined as part of the meet information. 3. Youth Swimming Competition Rules. AAU Swimming is conducted under the AAU Code, AAU Aquatics Handbook and the competitive rules of USA Swimming as modified by the AAU National Aquatics Committee. a. Qualification Procedure. The AAU Swimming National Championships will be held at the AAU Junior Olympic Games. For qualifications, please refer to Appendix B. b. Age Divisions for Swimming National Championships i. 8 and Under Boys and Girls 9-10 Boys and Girls 11-12 Boys and Girls 13-14 Boys and Girls 15-18 Boys and Girls ii. Athlete’s age on the first day of competition shall determine the division of the competitor. iii. At the National Championship, heats for 8 and Under division may be combined with 9-10 division but will be awarded separately. The 8 and Under division is offered for the 50 Meter events and 200 Meter freestyle relays. c. Rules and Restrictions. Additional rules and restrictions as outlined in the AAU Junior Olympic Games Meet Information Packet shall be followed. 4. Other Aquatics Competition Rules. For other Aquatics sports such as Water Polo and Synchronized Swimming, the competition rules of the National Governing Body will apply. IV. EXCERPTS FROM AAU CODE BOOK A. AAU Membership. Our club was founded on fundamental values of integrity, excellence and commitment. PTC promotes a family oriented and welcoming environment. We do not promote the recruitment of athletes and rather participants find our mission complimentary to their core values and objectives. Our program is not marketed as an elite track and field club which only seeks to recruit top ranked athletes or supplementary training for other sports. We accept all interested candidates regardless of their skill level. Many of Columbus' top track and field stars began their careers as “Pacesetters” and upon entry into high school have had very successful high school careers. We are excited that our foundation has created such promising athletes. Our program also offers training in all track and field events (except pole vault). We are not a specialty club, thus youth are provided complete bio-mechanic training and complete track and field fundamentals. Athletic clubs in New York Cityin the nineteenth century were` stratified along religious, ethnic,occupational, political; and social class lines. These factorshad a significantApact on the- athletic'associations and sport governingbodies. Although the NAAAA maintained that it was the nationalgoverning body .for amateur sport, gambling, and it was never capable ofcontrolling professionalism and never, in reality, anational organization. In 1888the New York Alhletic Club withdrew` from the NAAAAto form the AAU. The AAU was ten the dominant associationuntil these two organizationsmerged in 1890. During the nexttwenty-five years the power of the, NewYork clubs in the AAU declined. However,they still maintained their influence on the AAU governingboard through thehard work of several hold of their representatives.,TheNew York clubs were thus able to positions of power in athletic clubassociations disproportionate with their numbers. Thedecisions and policies that weremade therefore may have favored theselarger, upper midale class tale clubs.
