A COMPARATIVE PHENETIC AND CLADISTIC ANALYSIS OF THE GENUS HOLCASPIS CHAUDOIR (COLEOPTERA: CARABIDAE) ********* A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Lincoln University by Yupa Hanboonsong ********* Lincoln University 1994 Abstract of a thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Ph.D. A comparative phenetic and cladistic analysis of the genus Holcaspis Chaudoir (Coleoptera: .Carabidae) by Yupa Hanboonsong The systematics of the endemic New Zealand carabid genus Holcaspis are investigated, using phenetic and cladistic methods, to construct phenetic and phylogenetic relationships. Three different character data sets: morphological, allozyme and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), are used to estimate the relationships. Cladistic and morphometric analyses are undertaken on adult morphological characters. Twenty six external morphological characters, including male and female genitalia, are used for cladistic analysis. The results from the cladistic analysis are strongly congruent with previous publications. The morphometric analysis uses multivariate discriminant functions, with 18 morphometric variables, to derive a phenogram by clustering from Mahalanobis distances (D2) of the discrimination analysis using the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetical averages (UPGMA).

As in many other countries, large areas of native forest have been replaced by other land cover and are now in exotic pasture grassland or plantation forest. Ground beetles (Carabidae) are often used as ecological indicators, they provide ecosystem services such as pest control, and some species are endangered. However, few studies in New Zealand have assessed the habitat value for carabid beetles of natural forest, managed regenerating natural forest, pine plantation forest and pasture. Methods: We compared the carabid beetle assemblages of natural forest of Nothofagus solandri var solandri (also known as Fuscospora solandri or black beech), regenerating N. solandri forest managed for timber production, exotic pine plantation forest and exotic pasture, using pitfall traps.

The limited number of chemical molluscicides on the market, along with their negative impact on nontarget organisms and the environment, make mollusc control a real concern for growers and farmers. Therefore, the exploration of alternative, effective and eco-friendly control measures has become a dire need. This study focuses on slugs, as opposed to snails, and reviews the literature on three natural enemies of slugs, namely nematodes, carabid beetles and marsh flies, along with various natural products with slug control potential (for example, essential oils), and this study contributes to providing a comprehensive understanding of how slugs can be better controlled by using nonchemical measures. In doing so, this study also draws attention to the limitations of current research and discusses some important future research avenues in order to develop effective nonchemical slug control measures. SMITH Department of Entomology and Animal Ecology, PO Box 84, Lincoln University 1DowElanco NZ Ltd, PO Box 98, Taupo ABSTRACT The potential of the ground beetle, Megadromus antarcticus (Chaudoir) (Coleoptera: Carabidae) to prey upon slugs was investigated in laboratory and field experiments. This beetle preyed upon both Deroceras panormitanum (Lessona & Pollonera) and D. reticulatum (Müller) and consumed, on average, 0.55 slug per beetle per day. A positive linear relationship between slug density and slug consumption was observed. However, the biomass of slugs consumed remained relatively constant at 0.3 g slug per beetle per day. Slug numbers were reduced in small field plots of lettuce by beetle predation. However, this ground beetle is unlikely to be a useful biological control agent for slugs in intensive field crops because large innudative releases would be needed. Keywords:carabid, slug, predation, Megadromus antarcticus INTRODUCTION Introduced terrestrial slug species have become widely established in New Zealand and some cause significant damage to agricultural and horticultural crops (Barker 1979). Two of the most commonly encountered species are grey field slug, Deroceras reticulatum (Müller), and brown field slug, Deroceras panormitanum (Lessona & Pollonera) (Scott 1984). In horticultural crops, control of slugs has traditionally been attempted by using various formulations of molluscicides, but the efficacy of these is often variable (Symondson 1989). Other preventative methods, such as barriers or traps, are either inefficient or impractical to use in commercial production areas. The critically endangered ground beetle Holcaspis brevicula Butcher, a local endemic known only from a small area in that region, is thought to be threatened by the loss and fragmentation of the formerly widespread forest and shrubland habitat. Previously, only the two type specimens, both male, were known to science. From 2000–2005, we conducted a survey for H. brevicula, using pitfall traps and active searching, in four of the largest remnants of the once extensive low forest and shrubland of känuka, Kunzea ericoides, each covering less than 20 ha. In addition we conducted extensive trapping in an adjacent 7000 ha plantation forest of exotic Pinus radiata, in grassland and pasture areas, exotic shrubland, and in the nearest mountain beech (Nothofagus solandri var. cliffortioides) forest in the foothills of the Southern Alps. A total of 8658 carabids representing 47 species were collected over 57 494 trap-days, including five specimens of H. brevicula, all found in the pine plantation.

Abstract Time travel weevils: Unravelling the evolutionary past of Hadramphus using histrorical and modern DNA by Emily D Fountain Museum specimens are of increasing importance to the study of ecology, evolution, phylogenetics and conservation biology. In this thesis I explore the use of museum specimens to analyse population changes and declines in the endangered weevil genus Hadramphus over the past 125 years. Molecular phylogenetics aids our understanding of species taxonomy by including the neutral evolutionary history of a species’ genetic code rather than relying on morphological characteristics alone. The phylogeny of the genus Hadramphus was obtained using the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and the ribosomal nuclear internal transcribe spacer 2 (ITS2).

Watt (1975) estimated there were 9460 described species of insects, which does not include the gastropods and several highly diverse arthropod groups. Current estimates suggest a total insect fauna in New Zealand of between 17 500 and 20 400 species, but probably at least 20 000 species (Emberson 1998). In comparison with other groups, such as plants (2046 indigenous species ((Landcare Herbarium, 1998 cited in Emberson, in press)) the New Zealand insect fauna clearly accounts for the bulk of New Zealand's macroscopic biodiversity. Species level endemism is very high; Lepidoptera 94%, Orthoptera 95%, Coleoptera 96%, Plecoptera, Trichoptera and Ephemeroptera 100%. New Zealand also has several endemic families and many endemic genera (Watt 1975). The threats faced by invertebrates can, in general, be placed in four broad categories (New 1995); (1)The effect of habitat destruction/modification including habitat frag- mentation. (2)Effects of pollution and pesticides (not currently known to be of major importance in New Zealand).
