June 23, 2009 - PRLog -- Right from cult classics like Baazi (1951) to Sholay (1975) and Baazigar (1993) - and even Ghajini (2008) - all have some western movie as the stimulus. The Hollywood influence is evident in some of the forthcoming biggies like Paa, Action Replay, Agyaat and Pyaar Impossible. Guru Dutt's debut Baazi was inspired by the Rita Hayworth starrer Gilda (1946), while Sholay is widely called an 'Indian curry Western film', with inspiration from seven Hollywood films including - Once Upon A Time In The West (1968), Spaghetti Westerns, The Wild Bunch (1969), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973) and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). Baazigar and Ghajini are said to be Indianised versions of A Kiss Before Dying (1991) Memento (2000) respectively. Paa supposedly draws its plot from the 1996 comedy-drama Jack, about a boy who ages faster than normal due to a disease, while Akshay Kumar-starrer Action Replay is an alleged take-off on the reverse-ageing drama The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Promos of Ram Gopal Varma's horror thriller Agyaat suggest sequences from sci-fi horror Predator (1987). Pyaar Impossible is apparently sketched around reality TV series Beauty and the Geek and 1999s Notting Hill - on a relationship between a film actress and her fan. DOI: 10.1093/oxartj/kcq013 Masculine Regeneration and the Attenuated Body in the Early Works of Nandalal Bose Niharika Dinkar Boise State University In 2008, the works of the Bengali artist Nandalal Bose (1882-1966) enjoyed a rare North American museum tour, first at the San Diego Museum of Art and then at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In this first major international excursion, Bose’s works were celebrated as an exemplar of the new modern visual language adopted by nationalist artists as they rejected Europeanized academic techniques in vogue around the turn of the twentieth century. Along with stalwarts like Abanindranath Tagore, Asit Haldar and Kshitindranath Majumdar, the ‘swadeshi’ (indigenous) artists marked an emphatic turn to revive an ‘Indian’ aesthetic that has been seen to direct the course of modern Indian art since the early twentieth century. However, despite the persistence of this celebratory narrative, one key aspect of swadeshi nationalist politics that has remained unexplored is the distinctive slender body their art authorised. -

PAPER 6 DANCE IN INDIA TODAY, DANCE-DRAMAS, CREATIVITY WITHIN THE CLASSICAL FORMS, INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE IN DIASPORA (USA, UK, EUROPE, AUSTRALIA, ETC.) MODULE 15 KATHAK AS VOCATION For long has dance been a vocation in India. Both men and women have been ritual dance specialists associated with temples and monasteries. The story of the Devadasis, Maibis and Maharis / भहायी is well known. There are monk dancers in Assam called bhakats who are examples of males who dedicate their lives to the performance of dance as an offering and a ritual in a temple. There were also public platforms, where for entertainment purposes men and women danced. Chhau / छाऊ, Raibenshe / यैफᴂशे, Yakshagana / मऺगान, Kuchipudi / कु चिऩुड़ी, etc are examples of how and when traditionally males’ danced. Some of the women belonging to specific communities were associated with dancing for entertainment. For instance the Kalbelia / कारफेलरमा, Rai / याइ and Bedia / फेडडमा women were for centuries known to dance for entertainment. It is believed that the Bedia women danced for the laborers from different parts of the word who had collected at Taj Ganj at the time of the building of the Taj Mahal. Later they were among the communities and tribes that entertained the British troupes. Today many Bedia girls are among the Bar dancers of Mumbai. Apart from these girls there was also a group of traditional performers called by various names- Tawaif / तवामप, baijis / फाईजी, 1 etc. They were a whole range of professional dancing girls, some so talented that they had access to the highest centres of power, like the palace and the courtly setting, and were well integrated with the royals and the aristocracy. -
