Properties like Star Trek , Star Wars , and the Marvel Comics Universe extend across fi lm, television, video games, novels, comics, toys, and so on. Media consumers are now able to engage with their favorite characters, locations, and other franchise- distinguishing features in a variety of ways, through several different kinds of media. Viewers/readers/players follow the franchise, enjoying the interrelationships that are created across the textual galaxies. Such stories, characters and settings are transmedial in that they cross borders between different media, and traditional boundaries between media forms do not always hold fast or refl ect the audience’s experience of media engagement. 1 In this kind of multimedia network, music can illuminate the relationship between constituent texts of a transmedial franchise and may act as an agent for articulating and constructing those textual connections. -
Worlds Turned Back to Front: the Politics of the Mirror Universe in Doctor Who and Star Trek
Worlds turned back to front: the politics of the mirror universe in Doctor Who and Star Trek It is a curious parallel that unquestionably the most successful science fiction television series to emerge from the UK and the US both began in the 1960s, endured lengthy hiatuses, oscillated between mainstream and cult appreciation, and both currently revel in their cross- media commercial appeal. Doctor Who (1963-89, 2005-present) and Star Trek (1966-9), through their lengthy broadcast histories, might be used to chart any number of cultural shifts in their host communities. Far from being abstruse and introspective creations of geeky fandoms, both have been central to the popular culture of their respective societies – Matt Hills noted that ‘for much of its cultural life Doctor Who has actually occupied the mainstream of British television programming’ (Hills 2010: 98); John Tulloch’s and Henry Jenkins’ examination of science fiction audiences make it clear that in creating Star Trek Gene Roddenberry evinced a ‘desire to reach a mass viewership and a desire to address the burning social issues of the day’ (Jenkins and Tulloch 1995: 7). Popular television in general has always been a prime site for the exploration of pressing social concerns (Williams 1974: 58), and science fiction is also often politically engaged: Hassler and Wilcox point out that ‘[p]olitical science often addresses many of the same questions as those raised in science fiction…the role of the state…the nature of the just society’ (Hassler and Wilcox 1997: 1). Doctor Who and Star Trek are both notable for openly or covertly addressing the distinctive social and political problems faced by their respective societies. -
Star Trek: the Next Interpretation; Changing Notions of American Citizenship in the Original Series
Star Trek: The Next Interpretation; Changing Notions of American Citizenship in The Original Series By McKenzie Marie Taranto Honors Thesis Department of English and Comparative Literature University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill 2020 Approved: (signature of advisor) ____________________________________________ I. Introduction Writers and thinkers of the 1960s became increasingly interested in defining ethics and morality, outlining desirability character traits that delineate humanity as being complex and multifaceted, requiring creativity, courage, utility, intuition, integrity, justice, respect, compassion, and a duty.1 Infused with these interests, popular media of this period, moreover, became a rich source for depicting and interrogating these qualities. Comprised of three seasons, Star Trek: The Original Series ran from 1966 to 1969. The show follows the adventures of Captain James T. Kirk and his team on the USS Enterprise as they travel through the galaxy exploring new worlds and civilizations under the command of Starfleet, the military force behind the Federation. Believing that individuals had the duty to examine what it means to be human, creator Gene Roddenberry used the show as a platform for exploring the terms and conditions of humanity (Fern 5). Thus, as a response to post-World War II nihilism, Star Trek, in particular, provided direction for baby boomers by defining humanity in terms of American citizenship. As the lead character in the series, Captain Kirk portrays many of the key human qualities above, most significantly in his sense of courage, intuition, integrity, compassion, as well as his strong sense of duty during the commission of his work for the Federation. Throughout the three seasons, Captain Kirk serves as a moral guide for the audience by defining what it means to be a good human and a productive member of American society. -
