In some circles, it is the end-all and be-all of criticism; that is, if a building cannot be classified in a manner or taste, then it can have no significance as architecture. In others, consideration of style is regarded as an act of pretension that deflects our analysis of architecture from a natural (and honest) realm into a profane world of wealth, class and power. Each of these extremist views wields style as a club in an ideological battle that is more about contem- porary attitudes toward history than about history itself. The rationale is that style in traditional buildings is an indi- vidualistic, subjective phenomenon that cannot be reliably interpreted other than in the broadest of terms and that the deeper meaning of the architecture is in its physical (as opposed to metaphysical) fabric. As a result, while we have grown fluent in vocabularies of types, forms and plans and skilled in methods for finding patterns in organization and function, our ability to articulate the substance of a building’s emotive content or to discern the range and diversity of its expressive power has developed to a far lesser degree. As we have become attuned to the complexities of vernacular buildings, we have continued to refine our interpretive frame- works to accommodate new empirical data. The League’s EPIP program was established to foster the revitalization and protection of historic resources and neighborhoods throughout New York. The loan will help support stabilization and weatherproofing at the National Register-listed building. 48 Hudson Avenue was built by Johannes van Ostrande in 1728 just outside the city’s stockade walls and a few hundred yards from the old Fort Orange. The building retains many features not often preserved in other buildings from its time, including a molded anchor beam, the outline of a jambless fireplace, wide pine exterior siding, wide floorboards, steeply pitched roof beams, and original brick walls. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008 and prior to that had been a contributing property to the Downtown Albany Historic District. “The Van Ostrande-Radliff House provides a rare and authentic connection to Albany’s early history, as well as the settlement and urbanization of New York State,” said Jay DiLorenzo, President of the Preservation League of New York State.

Restoring the Van Ostrande-Radliff House at 48 Hudson CARA MACRI • When Historic Albany Foundation received 48 Hudson in 2013, we knew that the building had to be restored to tell its history. We could not just turn the clock back to 1728 and destroy all the additions and changes that happened over its close to 300 years. We created a team of architects and preservationists to develop a sensitive plan to restore the building. 48 Hudson Avenue was constructed in three distinct phases over 100 years, giving the building multiple periods of significance. Our restoration plan respects each section as a products of its time. We are starting with the Van Ostrande - Radliff House which is nestled within the front third of 48 Hudson Avenue and are taking it back its original Dutch appearance, representing the working class, urban Dutch people who inhabited the house. The false front will be removed and the façade restored to its 1728 appearance, including restoring the steeply pitched gabled roof . The 19th century industrial additions will be repaired and adapted, as the additions are well suited for modern use.
