Executive Summary This survey was a continuation of several years of rare plant survey on San Juan Public Lands. Funding for the project was provided by San Juan National Forest and the San Juan Resource Area of the Bureau of Land Management. Previous rare plant surveys on San Juan Public Lands by CNHP were conducted in conjunction with county wide surveys of La Plata, Archuleta, San Juan and San Miguel counties, with partial funding from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO); and in 2004, public lands only in Dolores and Montezuma counties, funded entirely by the San Juan Public Lands. Funding for 2005 was again provided by San Juan Public Lands. The primary emphases for field work in 2005 were: 1. revisit and update information on rare plant occurrences of agency sensitive species in the Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) database that were last observed prior to 2000, in order to have the most current information available for informing the revision of the Resource Management Plan for the San Juan Public Lands (BLM and San Juan National Forest); 2. -

Asters of Yesteryear (Updated April 2018) About this Update: The document was originally posted in a shorter version, to accompany the brief article "Where Have all our Asters Gone?" in the Fall 2017 issue of Sego Lily. In that version it consisted simply of photos of a number of plants that had at some time been included in Aster but that no longer are, as per Flora of North America. In this version I have added names to the photos to indicate how they have changed since their original publication: Date and original name as published (Basionym) IF name used in Intermountain Flora (1994) UF name used in A Utah Flora (1983-2016) FNA name used in Flora of North America (2006) I have also added tables to show the renaming of two groups of species in the Astereae tribe as organized in Intermountain Flora. Color coding shows how splitting of the major genera largely follows fault lines already in place No color Renamed Bright Green Conserved Various Natural groupings $ Plant not in Utah It is noteworthy how few species retain the names used in 1994, but also how the renaming often follows patterns already observed. Asters of Yesteryear (Updated April 2018) Here are larger photos (16 inches wide or tall at normal screen resolution of 72 dpi) of the plants shown in Sego Lily of Fall 2017, arranged by date of original publication. None of them (except Aster amellus on this page) are now regarded as true asters – but they all were at one stage in their history. Now all are in different genera, most of them using names that were published over 100 years ago. -

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memorandum report is to document and update the biological conditions and resources of the proposed Panamint Valley drill pads/exploration boring sites. The focus of this preliminary survey is to review the Project Study Area in order to identify the existing habitat types and any special-status species with potential to occur. The Project Study Area is within the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Inyo County, California. The Project Study Area is located in the southern portion of Panamint Valley East Panamint Valley road. The six locations are located along Ballarat, Wingate, and Indian Ranch roads. (see map) . The Panamint Valley Drill Pad Project was assessed for biological resources August 22, 2017. Biological resources were evaluated based on the standard database searches conducted prior to the site visit. Proposed Panamint Drill Pads Scope of Work The proposed operation is to drill six exploration bore holes at the locations and in the manner described below, in the Panamint Valley, Inyo County, California. The primary exploration target is lithium. It is proposed to drill all six of these holes vertically to a depth of 2,000 feet each. Five of the holes will be drilled by standard reverse circulation rotary drill methods and will have a diameter of approximately 5 ½ inches. -

Ott Individualistic and Phylogenetic Perspectives on Plant Community Patterns (Under the direction of Robert K. Peet) Plant communities have traditionally been viewed as spatially discrete units structured by dominant species, and methods for characterizing community patterns have reflected this perspective. In this dissertation, I adopt an an alternative, individualistic community characterization approach that does not assume discreteness or dominant species importance a priori (Chapter 2). This approach was used to characterize plant community patterns and their relationship with environmental variables at Zion National Park, Utah, providing details and insights that were missed or obscure in previous vegetation characterizations of the area. I also examined community patterns at Zion National Park from a phylogenetic perspective (Chapter 3), under the assumption that species sharing common ancestry should be ecologically similar and hence be co-distributed in predictable ways. I predicted that related species would be aggregated into similar habitats because of phylogenetically-conserved niche affinities, yet segregated into different plots because of competitive interactions. However, I also suspected that these patterns would vary between different lineages and at different levels of the phylogenetic hierarchy (phylogenetic scales). I examined aggregation and segregation in relation to null models for each pair of species within genera and each sister pair of a genus-level vascular plant iii supertree. -

E. Durant McArthur Richard Stevens Chapter 21 Composite Shrubs The sunflower family (Compositae or Asteraceae) is the largest family of flowering plants. Its many species occur around the world as annual and perennial herbs and as shrubs and trees (Benson 1957; Cronquist 1968; Wagenitz 1977). Three shrubby genera of the family—sagebrush (Artemisia), rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus), and matchbrush (Gutierrezia)—make plants of this family among the most common and important plants of the Intermountain area (McArthur and others 1979a; table 1). Shrubs of these genera provide critically needed ground cover on arid Western ranges, are important sources of browse for domes- tic livestock and big game, and serve as cover and forage for many wildlife species. A number of sagebrush and rabbitbrush species are important as cover for small birds, game birds, and mam- mals, and as browse plants for big game animals, especially on winter and early spring ranges. Some species also provide forage for livestock (sheep and cattle). Horsebrush and matchbrush also contribute more forage than is generally believed; however, both plants may, under certain conditions, be harmful to domestic livestock (Benson and Darrow 1945; Johnson 1974a; McArthur and others 1979a) and cause allergies in humans (Lewis and Elvin-Lewis 1977; Rodriguez and others 1976).
