Go to: NFU Scotland | /nfushereforyou.aspx All (virtual) roads lead to #NFUS2021 AGM, Conference and elections – 10, 11 and 12 February With our election hustings now complete, arrangements for the exciting programme for the conference and AGM is now available to view at: https://www.nfus.org.uk/about-nfus/agm-2021.aspx • On Wednesday 10 February, we are delighted to host an exciting webinar with Tim Smith, chair of the newly created Trade and Agriculture Commission – the body that will have oversight on the UK’s future trade deals. • On Thursday 11 February, outgoing President Andrew McCornick will give his final Presidential address before joining a panel of all UK Farming Union Presidents – Minette Batters, NFU; John Davies, NFU Cymru and Victor Chestnutt, UFU – to discuss Brexit, future trade deals and agricultural policy. • On Friday 12 February, we have the excitement of our elections followed by our traditional address from Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy, Fergus Ewing. As a reminder, the four nominations for the two Vice Presidential posts are (in alphabetical order): • Andrew Connon, North Quilquox, Ythanbank, Ellon, Aberdeenshire. • Willie Harper, Gryffewraes, Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire. • George Milne, Kinaldy, St Andrews, Fife. • Robin Traquair, Wellington Farm, Millerhill, Dalkeith, Midlothian. Current Vice President Martin Kennedy, who will stand unchallenged for the position of President, also took part in the virtual events. • Videos of every hustings event as well as short videos and biographies for all five candidates are available on the Union’s website at: https://www.nfus.org.uk/nfus- elections-2021.aspx As part of our online arrangements for our annual AGM and conference, the elections will take place at the Union’s virtual council meeting on Friday 12 February 2021, with online voting arrangements for council members in place. In other news this week… Scottish Budget sees lobbying on LFA secure funding commitment for 2021 CLOSING THIS WEEK – Views needed on AHDB five-year strategy AECS 2021 opened on Monday Animal Transport proposals – DEFRA deadline extended to 25 February Improving broadband and mobile connectivity – webinar on Wed 17 February Climate Change video competition + drone package up for grabs – deadline 1 March Scottish Farm Business Survey – take part and get a free whole farm carbon audit Land Matching Service getting round the country virtually + Allan joins the team Dougie takes the Stalwart award in Argyll & The Islands Scottish Budget sees lobbying on LFA secure funding commitment for 2021 We welcomed funding commitments for 2021 made in yesterday’s Scottish Budget in the face of the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, its impact on the economy and the challenging post-EU transition period. While more detail will emerge in coming days, key announcements for the agricultural sector centred on support for Less Favoured Areas, the Agricultural Transformation Fund and the Agri-Environment Climate Scheme in 2021. However, longer term commitments to funding beyond the current year will continue to be sought by NFUS. Headline figures for 2021 in the announcement are the following: • Less Favoured Areas Support reinstated to its 2018 level of £65 million. • £40m Agriculture Transformation Fund • £34.2 for AECS • Uplift in spending for Scotland Food and Drink Industry Support, Local authorities, Crofting Commission, Animal Health • Support for tree planting, peatland restoration and connectivity Covid-19 compliance remains crucial for farmers and crofters Farmers and crofters need to be more concerned now about the safety of themselves, their families and their staff than ever before. • We urge all farmers and crofters to avoid complacency, keep up your guard and re- visit the guidance for farmers and crofters produced by Scottish Government at: https://bit.ly/2K2aEr0 to keep businesses running and stock looked after. • Keeping our markets, abattoirs and processing going throughout the Covid-19 outbreak has been a major achievement but this new variant of the virus and the latest spike means the need for compliance is even more essential if we are to avoid closures or partial shutdowns at these essential sites. The latest guidance for those attending markets can be found at: https://iaas.co.uk/iaas-updates-covid-19-auction- mart.../ AECS 2021 opened on Monday After a significant lobbying effort by NFU Scotland, Scottish Government confirmed that there would be a further round of the Agri-environment Climate Scheme (AECS) for 2021, albeit on a partial and limited basis. Applications for the 2021 AECS round opened on 25 January 2021 and close on 30 June 2021. Improving Public Access (IPA) will be open for applications from 1 March until 30 June 2021. Before applying for this scheme, applicants should read the rules and information for individual options and capital items at: https://www.ruralpayments.org/topics/all- schemes/agri-environment-climate-scheme/ Animal Transport proposals – DEFRA deadline extended to 25 February There are 2 consultations currently taking place which could have significant implications for how we move and transport livestock in the UK and Scotland. It is vital that NFUS and its members respond robustly to these consultations to ensure the UK and Scottish Governments take an evidence led, practical approach to any changes in the Livestock Transport Regulations. NFUS has held two virtual meeting to discuss the potential impacts of the proposals, and thanks the hundreds of members who took part to help inform the NFUS response. Entrants should record a three-minute video telling our judging panel, Ben Macpherson, Claire Taylor from the Scottish Farmer, and Next Generation Chair Peter Moss, the steps they've taken to tackle climate change, and why they think these are important, for a chance to win a SoilEssentials package and a state-of-the-art drone.
