  • Caspar Nieuwenhuis You Must Change Your Art!
Caspar Nieuwenhuis You must change your art! Performative dramaturgy in the twenty-first century PART 1 TIDES Who in heaven’s name has stopped our swift ship out at sea as she was making port? Only a moment ago she was in full view. (Homer, The Odyssey1) The dramaturgy of this age You must change your art! Heed this imperative!2 Let it resound through tiered theatres and flat- floored theatres. Let it echo through the corridors of broadcasting companies and teaching departments. Let it ring through parliaments and policy bureaus. Let it buzz on film sets, at festivals and in design studios. Let it reverberate on your type areas and music scores. You must change your art! This era requires it. But what is it, ‘this era’? As Jan Rotmans, Erasmus University Rotterdam’s Professor of Transitions and Transition Management, grandly summarises it: ‘We are not in an age of change, but a change of age.’3 As far as he is concerned, it is more than change that is taking place; this era is mutating on an evolutionary scale.4 The change is taking place in every dimension of our society, at the micro and macro levels of the economy. It is a system change, a paradigm shift, a slow transition from one value system to another. It is like the ‘deflation’ of the standard kilo: a gradual process with fundamental consequences.5 Consequences that combine to produce a crisis in the units of measure.6 In this age of the digital revolution, Rotmans and other futurist romanticists see the same characteristics as the Industrial Revolution at the end of the nineteenth century.

The paper discusses: (1) Structure and framework conditions of the German media (a historical review of the mass media since 1945); (2) Press (including its particular reliance on local news and the creation of the world status media group, Bertelsmann AG);(3) News agencies and public relations work (which insure a "never-ending stream" of information);(4) Radio and Television (with emphasis on the Federal Republic's surprisingly large number of radio stations--public, commercial, and "guest");(5) New communication paths and media (especially communication and broadcasting satellites and cable in wideband-channel networks);(6) The profession of journalist (which still relies on on-the-job training rather than university degrees); and (7) Help for the media in the Third World (professional training in Germany of journalists and technical experts from underdeveloped countries appears to be the most appropriate way to promote Third World media).

  • THE THOUSAND-STEP MODEL Or, the Earth As a Peppercorn
THE THOUSAND-STEP MODEL or, The Earth as a Peppercorn Copyright 1989 by Guy Ottewell Universal Workshop PO Box 426 Middleburg, VA 20118-0426 ISBN 0-934546-21-5 [Converted into metric units by Malcolm Coe] This is a classic exercise for visualizing just how BIG our Solar System really is. Both the relative size and spacing of the planets are demonstrated in this outdoor exercise, using a mere peppercorn to represent the size of the Earth. Guy Ottewell has kindly given permission for this electronic presentation of The Thousand-Yard Model; his exercise is presented in its original form, indexed with a few anchors to help you find you way around the large file. Image of the planets courtesy of NASA. Introduction Pacing off the Solar System Additional Notes Beyond the Solar System Numerical Summary Introduction Can you picture the dimensions of the solar system? Probably not, for they are of an order so amazing that it is difficult either to realize or to show them. You may have seen a diagram of the Sun and planets, in a book. Or you may have seen a revolving model of the kind called an orrery (because the first was built for an Earl of Orrery in 1715). But even the largest of such models--such as those that cover the ceilings of the Hayden Planetarium in New York and the Morehead Planetarium at Chapel Hill-are far too small. They omit the three outermost planets, yet still cannot show the remaining ones far enough apart. The fact is that the planets are mighty small and the distances between them are almost ridiculously large.

PRESS RELEASE – Friday 23.10.2015 – Press embargo 09.00pm (Berlin time) Seven Countries win at PRIX EUROPA 2015 Best European media productions of the year were honoured in Berlin On Friday evening the festive finale of the European Media Award PRIX EUROPA took place in the historic broadcasting house in Berlin. 12 TV-, Radio- and Online programmes received a prize as Best European Production of the Year, originating from Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Germany. In addition, the Swedish investigative journalist Rolf Stengård was honoured for his lifetime achievement. First all the nominated productions have to be viewed and listened to, then they are discussed and voted on. It is hardly surprising that in some categories the selection process takes five days. In the end twelve bronze Taurus Trophies were handed over to the winners, plus 6000 Euros each. In addition, the Swedish journalist Rolf Stengård was honoured for his merits in investigative journalism with the PRIX EUROPA Lifetime Achievement Award. This prize goes to an outstanding personality of the European media world every year.
