The Men’s Room

ABOUT US The Men's Room is an arts and social charity that works creatively to empower men aged 18-30. We support male sex workers, homeless men and men involved in the criminal justice system. We offer them opportunities to get involved in high quality arts projects whilst accessing one to one support for challenges they face in their everyday lives. Our work engages young men experiencing multiple disadvantage, including homeless men, sex workers, men with experience of sexual exploitation, offenders, and men struggling with mental health problems and substance misuse. We work with artists on a diverse range of projects throughout the year, whilst also offering outreach services and personalised support to our service users. Project Director Fergal defines our approach as 'marrying the Health & Social department with creative intervention, offering the men respite and a space for reflection, whilst also giving them a creative outlet they wouldn't otherwise get. This allows them to engage with positivity and creativity, to be young men.' The Men's Room has staff, partners and volunteers from both the arts and social care agencies.

Give

Small acts of kindness towards other people, or larger ones – such as volunteering in your local community – can give you a sense of purpose and make you feel happier and more satisfied about life. For example, a 2004 study in 373 older adults found that some aspects of wellbeing were higher in those who did volunteering projects, compared with those who did not. How about volunteering? Local organisations are looking for your support either a few hours or a few days per week. Expenses are usually paid and you will be trained for the work you do. Volunteering for wellbeing should not affect your benefits, check if you are unsure.

*NB. This is not an exhaustive list of all the community support in the neighbourhoods. Some less formal support is also available. Several schools in the area offer support in the way of food parcels to their families, likewise some GPs also offer informal food/sanitary parcels to their patients when in need. There are various church halls and community centres that supply surplice food which is provided from fare share or other local stores.

SANE also offers ‘Textcare’ – a way of providing emotional support and connection for anyone affected by mental illness, including families, friends and carers. • A regular time when you may feel lonely or isolated, for example at weekends or when other services or support are not available. • A specific time when you would like some extra support, for example before attending an appointment. The service provides one text per week for five weeks. If you would like to continue the support beyond this time, simply re-submit the form below. Textcare is a one-way service, so you will not be able to respond directly to the text messages received.

This is NOT a crisis service. If you need support in a crisis, please refer to their crisis page
