  • The Civil War in the American Ruling Class
tripleC 16(2): 857-881, 2018 http://www.triple-c.at The Civil War in the American Ruling Class Scott Timcke Department of Literary, Cultural and Communication Studies, The University of The West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago, [email protected] Abstract: American politics is at a decisive historical conjuncture, one that resembles Gramsci’s description of a Caesarian response to an organic crisis. The courts, as a lagging indicator, reveal this longstanding catastrophic equilibrium. Following an examination of class struggle ‘from above’, in this paper I trace how digital media instruments are used by different factions within the capitalist ruling class to capture and maintain the commanding heights of the American social structure. Using this hegemony, I argue that one can see the prospect of American Caesarism being institutionally entrenched via judicial appointments at the Supreme Court of the United States and other circuit courts. Keywords: Gramsci, Caesarism, ruling class, United States, hegemony Acknowledgement: Thanks are due to Rick Gruneau, Mariana Jarkova, Dylan Kerrigan, and Mark Smith for comments on an earlier draft. Thanks also go to the anonymous reviewers – the work has greatly improved because of their contributions. A version of this article was presented at the Local Entanglements of Global Inequalities conference, held at The University of The West Indies, St. Augustine in April 2018. 1. Introduction American politics is at a decisive historical juncture. Stalwarts in both the Democratic and the Republican Parties foresee the end of both parties. “I’m worried that I will be the last Republican president”, George W. Bush said as he recoiled at the actions of the Trump Administration (quoted in Baker 2017).

  • The Evolution of the Digital Political Advertising Network
PLATFORMS AND OUTSIDERS IN PARTY NETWORKS: THE EVOLUTION OF THE DIGITAL POLITICAL ADVERTISING NETWORK Bridget Barrett A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Daniel Kreiss Adam Saffer Adam Sheingate © 2020 Bridget Barrett ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Bridget Barrett: Platforms and Outsiders in Party Networks: The Evolution of the Digital Political Advertising Network (Under the direction of Daniel Kreiss) Scholars seldom examine the companies that campaigns hire to run digital advertising. This thesis presents the first network analysis of relationships between federal political committees (n = 2,077) and the companies they hired for electoral digital political advertising services (n = 1,034) across 13 years (2003–2016) and three election cycles (2008, 2012, and 2016). The network expanded from 333 nodes in 2008 to 2,202 nodes in 2016. In 2012 and 2016, Facebook and Google had the highest normalized betweenness centrality (.34 and .27 in 2012 and .55 and .24 in 2016 respectively). Given their positions in the network, Facebook and Google should be considered consequential members of party networks. Of advertising agencies hired in the 2016 electoral cycle, 23% had no declared political specialization and were hired disproportionately by non-incumbents. The thesis argues their motivations may not be as well-aligned with party goals as those of established political professionals. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF TABLES AND FIGURES .................................................................................................................... Does Hillary have a BODY DOUBLE? Bizarre conspiracy theory claims the pneumonia-stricken candidate has been replaced by a lookalike Hillary Clinton had a 'medical episode' at 9/11 memorial ceremony Conspiracy theorists think she was replaced with a body double They claim photos show physical differences in Clinton after the incident Clinton apparently emerged from daughter's house 'with bigger earlobes' By SARAH DEAN FOR MAILONLINE PUBLISHED: 01:57 +10:00, 14 September 2016 | UPDATED: 03:43 +10:00, 14 September 2016 Conspiracy theorists have claimed Hillary Clinton used a body double after she suffered a dizzy spell at the 9/11 memorial on Sunday. Social media users have begun sharing photo comparisons of the Democratic candidate to point out supposed 'physical differences' in the Clinton that was seen emerging from her daughter Chelsea Clinton's house after the medical episode. Video of Clinton collapsing as she climbed into a van after visiting the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City sparked health concerns. The 68-year-old, who later announced she is suffering from pneumonia, insisted she did not faint but simply felt dizzy and stumbled. She said after sitting in the air conditioning and drinking a glass of water she 'immediately' began feeling better and felt well enough to take a detour to visit her daughter Chelsea and her grandchildren. However, critics say the woman who emerged from Chelsea’s apartment was a lookalike and not the real deal. Spot the difference? Social media users claim Hillary Clinton's nose, earlobes, fingers and weight all appeared different after she emerged from her daughter Chelsea's house on Sunday (left).

Data made available by the Center for Responsive Politics was helpful as were two interviews with Robert Maguire, whose expertise in political nonprofits was informative. 1 Super PACs and 501(c) Groups in the 2067 Election David B. Magleby Brigham Young University In only a short period of time, Super PACs have come to be one of the most important parts of American electoral politics. They raise and spend large sums of money in competitive federal elections. They have become fully integrated teammates with candidates, party leaders, and interest groups. While initially they were most visible in paying for television advertising, by 2016 they expanded their scope by providing a wide variety of campaign services once thought to be funded by candidate campaign committees (campaign events) or party committees, (get-out-the-vote, voter registration, list development). Where does the money come from that funds Super PACs and other outside groups? While much of the attention on sources of funding for Super PACs was initially on corporations and unions, the reality has been that most of the funding for Super PACs has been individuals. Publicly traded corporations have been infrequent funders of Super PACs, while unions have been more active in using Super PACs.

Gendered Voices: Rhetorical Agency and the Political Career of Hillary Rodham Clinton A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Justin Lee Killian IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Karlyn Kohrs Campbell, Ph.D. (Adviser) August 2012 © Justin Lee Killian 2012 Acknowledgments As a critic, I seek to understand how agency is created by the phrases we write and the words we speak. I love language, and these pages are my attempt to make sense of voice, rhetoric, and politics. The insightful ideas in this project come from the beautiful voices of my friends and family. The mistakes and blunders are all mine. I am blessed by the love of so many wonderful people, and I offer these acknowledgments as a small gesture of gratitude to all who have touched this project. As an academic, I am most indebted to Karlyn Kohrs Campbell for her faith and guidance. She nurtured this project from the beginning, and she was the driving force that helped push me over innumerable stumbling points. I am so glad she offered tough love and refused to let me stop fighting. I can only hope that my work in some way answers the important call Dr. Campbell has issued to the field of rhetorical studies. I am honored that she gave me her time and dedication. She will forever be my mentor and teacher. I also give thanks to the other members of my review committee. I am very grateful to the guidance provided by Edward Schiappa.

  • Change and Continuity in the Financing of the 2016 U.S. Federal Election
ONE Change and Continuity in the Financing of the 2016 U.S. Federal Election David B. Magleby The 2016 election had both continuity and change in how it was financed and in the under lying dynamics of the election. When mea sured in dollars raised and spent, the gap between nominees Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump was the greatest in any election since the era of more reliable reporting began in 1976. The gap between Clin- ton and her joint party fundraising committees and Trump and his joint party fundraising committees was more than $285 million. Given this disparity, how Donald Trump financed and ran his cam- paign was dif fer ent from other candidates in his ability to exploit free media coverage, his limited fundraising in the nomination phase, and his claims that his opponents in both the nomination and general election phases of the contest were corrupted by their donors. The financing of Trump’s campaign became more conventional in the general election, where he relied heavi ly on a joint fundraising agreement with his party, used their voter mobilization infrastructure, successfully tapped into contributions from small donors, and benefited from spending by Super PACs and nonprofit groups late in the campaign. Whether another presi- dential candidate can mount a Trump- like campaign in the future is un- certain, and Trump himself has signaled that when he seeks reelection in 2020 he intends to mount a more conventional campaign by aggressively fundraising earlier than his pre de ces sors and endorsing a Super PAC, Amer i ca First.1 1 01-3659-2-ch01.indd 1 2/26/19 4:11 AM 2 David B.
