Degn Matthew 11:20 ¶Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: 21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. 23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee. D&C 82:3 For of him unto whom much is given much is required; and he who sins against the greater light shall receive the greater condemnation. Miracles in Capernaum Capernaum was one of three cities (with Chorazin and Bethsaida) where the majority of Jesus’ miracles were done. These miracles are: a. Peter’s mother-in-law was healed (Matt 8:14, 15). b. The centurion’s servant was healed (Matt 8:5-13). This man had helped build the synagogue (Luke 7:2-20). c. The paralyzed man who was let down through the roof was also healed (Matt 9:1-8). -

Modern Research as illustrating the Bible, the title of his lectures, was a subject to which that great and many-sided scholar felt himself closely drawn; and neither that book nor any of his other writings on the subject can be ignored to-day in spite of the time that has elapsed. For although much has been done, especially since the War, in adding to our knowledge of Oriental archaeo logy and in the discussion of problems arising therefrom, Dr. Driver performed lasting service, not only in opening up what to many readers was a new world, but also in setting forth, with his usual completeness and clearness, both the real significance of the new discoveries and the principles to be employed when the Biblical records and the 'external' evidence are inter-related.1 When, therefore, I was asked, in 1925, to deliver the Schweich Lectures, the suggestion that some account might be given of the work subsequent to 1908 encouraged the wish I had long entertained: to reconsider the religion of Palestine primarily and mainly from the point of view of archaeology. -

La primera parte del artículo expone brevemente la importancia de las canciones de Naomi Shemer para la identidad Judeo-Israelí y argumenta por qué las pautas de pensamiento que encontramos en ellas se pueden considerar relevantes para la comprensión de la identidad Judeo-Israelí en general. El análisis de las letras seleccionadas expone algunos elementos contradictorios en el núcleo de la identidad Judeo-Israelí que las canciones de Naomi Shemer representan. Abstract: The following article analyzes the lyrics of a selection of the most popular songs by the prolific Jewish-Israeli songwriter Naomi Shemer, in order to recognize and highlight the most repeated patterns of thought in them. The first part of the article briefly explains the importance of Naomi Shemer’s songs for Jewish-Israeli identity and why the patterns of thought found in them can be considered relevant for understanding Jewish- Israeli identity in general. The analysis of the selected lyrics reveals some contradictory elements at the core of the Jewish-Israeli identity as represented by Naomi Shemer’s songs. The following is the handcrafted itinerary of the trip to Today we travel north to visit Hazor, the largest Old Testament site in Israel Israel that Mary and I are leading in response to those who have (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The desire of the Jews to maintain their na- tional and religious identity, when scattered among the nations, finds its actual expression in self organization, which has served to a ram- part against external influence. The dispersion of the people in modern times has become one of its unique characteristics. Things were different in classical period, and especially in the Hellenistic period, following the conquests of Alexander the Great, when disper- sion and segregational organization were by no means an exceptional phenomenon, as revealed by a close examination of the history of other nations. -

Ortiz Assistant Professor of Archaeology and Biblical Studies New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary 3939 Gentilly Blvd. New Orleans, LA 70126 Introduction Popular culture is searching for the real Jesus. The success of Mel Gibson’s movie The Passion and the book The DaVinci Code illustrate that Jesus is still important to Western Culture. The question is whether popular culture is meeting the real Jesus or a reconstructed Jesus who looks like a 21st century philosopher. The same question can be asked of today’s church. Which Jesus are we introducing to people who come to our Church? Which Jesus are we preaching from our pulpits? Which Jesus are people seeing living through our lives? Today there is a tension between the authentic Jesus and the desire to deconstruct Jesus into our image. This tension in the pulpit and pews correlates to trends among biblical scholars within acadamia. Perhaps one of the most influential movements in Historical Jesus Studies is the Jesus Seminar. The Jesus Seminar was founded in 1985 by Robert Funk. This is an assembled group of New Testament scholars whose goal is to examine every tradition associated with Jesus and determine what he actually said. This group of scholars assembled in order to ascertain via vote which of the statements attributed to Jesus in the Gospels (including the apocryphal Gospel of Thomas) were actually said by Jesus. -
