The year 2007 was closed with an overall passenger number of 174,858, which means that growth continues with an increase of over 18% compared to the previous year. However, the number of flight movements declined by about 6% to 51,589. This is mainly due to the decreasing number of training flights. Works In 2007 efforts were also made to further improve the infrastructure of Antwerp Airport. Late October, the platform where aircraft are parked was rearranged. As a result the old markings were removed and replaced by new ones. Aircrafts can now park closer to the airport building. During the summer months a new ILS installation was fitted. This Instrument Landing System indicates the desired glideslope angle and the runway axis during landing. This allows pilots to also reach the airport in less favourable weather conditions. The previous installation dated from 1978 and was due for replacement after all those years. On 8 June, the Flemish Government decided in view of the construction of an obligatory runway safety area of 150m at the R11 Krijgsbaan, to opt for a limited diversion of the R11. This means that the Krijgsbaan, half-dug-in, will be diverted. When the current recommendation of 300 metres is transposed into a requirement, the diverted Krijgsbaan will then be provided with a roof slab and the safety area will run over the R11. The construction of the RESA’s will cause air traffic safety to further increase, but will not extend the runway itself. 4 5 Website 1 2007 HIG H LIG ht S An important project was realised in the field of communication. (AFKL) is active principally in air transportation (passengers and freight) but also in ground services (for example, passenger handling). AFKL owns over 92 per cent of the economic rights in KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM), a Dutch registered international carrier operating scheduled cargo and passenger services to more than 90 destinations principally from Amsterdam. AFKL is a founding member of the SkyTeam Alliance and has two international hubs at Amsterdam Schiphol and Paris CDG airports.     Explaining the varying electoral appeal of the Vlaams Blok in the Districts of Antwerp Peter Thijssen and Sarah L. de Lange SUMMARY. The Vlaams Blok (now Vlaams Belang) has been among the more successful of Europe’s far-right parties. But there is still a good deal of statisti- cal analysis which might be done to help identify the factors in their success. This study looks at the best available data from electoral returns in the nine dis- tricts of Antwerp, which has been the locus of the Vlaams Blok’s support. A sta- tistical comparison is made between various social and economic factors, and the level of support for Vlaams Blok in an attempt to identify significant corre- lations. INTRODUCTION Since their resurgence in the 1980s, far-right parties in Western Europe have received a great deal of attention from the scholarly community. Many theories have been formulated which might account for the elec- toral successes of these parties. For instance, we now have a fairly detailed sociological profile of the average extreme-right voter. Nonetheless, it remains a challenge to the discipline to explain inter- and intra-national variations in the support for far-right parties. This statistical study aims to fill in a part of the second lacuna, and to outline the varieties of far-right support at the local level. Through an analysis of both the demand for, and the supply of, far-right parties in (sub-)local elections, we believe we can gain a better understanding of the shadings of the support for far-right parties in general.
