Available to Board of Directors for general or specific questions as well as providing artistic leadership behind fundraising initiatives. Travel to hear singers and see productions as required. Serve on Artistic Committee of Board of Directors. Advise on artistic and production budgets per production as well as long-range planning. Direct one main-stage opera per season, other directing duties as assigned, including interviews and public relations, proofing program and advertising, writing additional copy as necessary, participation in fundraising events and liaison to guild events for specific productions. Lead education previews of main-stage operas as well as selected previews for MET HD broadcasts with Filmstreams (Independent Cinema in Omaha). 3-5 weeks in-residence for administrative duties (outside of directing periods), weekly phone conferences with Communications Director and General Director. Attend as many board functions as professional work schedule / travel budget will permit. Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Mark Katz Tim Carter Brigid Cohen Annegret Fauser Philip Rupprecht © 2014 Ryan Scott Ebright ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Ryan Scott Ebright: Echoes of the Avant-garde in American Minimalist Opera (Under the direction of Mark Katz) The closing decades of the twentieth century witnessed a resurgence of American opera, led in large part by the popular and critical success of minimalism. Based on repetitive musical structures, minimalism emerged out of the fervid artistic intermingling of mid twentieth- century American avant-garde communities, where music, film, dance, theater, technology, and the visual arts converged. Within opera, minimalism has been transformational, bringing a new, accessible musical language and an avant-garde aesthetic of experimentation and politicization. Thus, minimalism’s influence invites a reappraisal of how opera has been and continues to be defined and experienced at the turn of the twenty-first century. “Echoes of the Avant-garde in American Minimalist Opera” offers a critical history of this subgenre through case studies of Philip Glass’s Satyagraha (1980), Steve Reich’s The Cave (1993), and John Adams’s Doctor Atomic (2005). This project employs oral history and archival research as well as musical, dramatic, and dramaturgical analyses to investigate three interconnected lines of inquiry. The first traces the roots of these operas to the aesthetics and practices of the American avant-garde communities with which these composers collaborated early in their careers.

    Surtitles.com articles in full WAGNER IS LETTER PERFECT The Canadian Opera Company’s impressive new production of Lohengrin is the first occasion I have totally enjoyed a Wagner opera. There have been passages of peak pleasure in the past, yet it seemed highly unlikely I would ever spend four hours in the O’Keefe Centre as a contented captive of Hitler’s favorite composer. The reason for this transformation was not hard to discover, being written in foot-high letters on the proscenium of the stage. Surtitles, the COC-developed technique for projecting a running, capsulized translation in English of a foreign-language opera’s libretto, is a marvellous boon. Those prepared by Gunta Dreifelds for Lohengrin were pungent and erudite. Secure in knowing exactly who is doing what to whom and why, one can bask contented, allowing the often glorious music to soothe the soul. Wagner’s subtle blending of four trumpeters (heralds) on stage with others in the orchestra had a particularly haunting beauty. Vocally, this was a mixed opening night with the few disappointments offset by some unexpected pleasures. You could sense the widespread dismay when general director Lotfi Mansouri craved audience indulgence, at the outset, on behalf of American soprano Janis Martin. She would continue to sing the role of Ortrud, he said, despite being indisposed with a cold. As the applause thundered at the close for this truly Wagnerian-sized interpreter of his works, all one could suggest was she had either been gifted with a miraculous cure or had given one of the greatest germ-defying performances of the century.

Most of this material derives from the rich archives of the Bell Telephone Hour which has provided us with performances by some of the greatest artists from the worlds of opera, dance and the concert stage.
