A Study of Selected Works of Ignaz Joseph Pleyel. (1964) Directed by: Dr. Lee Rigs by. 165 pp. The purpose of this study is to help fulfill a need in keyboard instruc - tion for more materials which are both worthy and exemplary of the period they reflect. For students in the intermediate grades, much of the literature re- flecting the classic style of the eighteenth century is far too difficult in its technical and interpretive demands. This is not true of many of the composi- tions of Ignaz Joseph Pleyel, but unfortunately his works fell into oblivion during the early nineteenth century and have up to the present played a very small role in the performing repertoire. The present discussion deals first with the biography of Pleyel, describ- ing his life as a composer and later as a successful business man.

1 Introduction 1.1. Defining the subject “It is the duty of Polish musicologists to know more or less as much about us as they do about the composers who live in Poland”1. These words come from Roman Palester’s letter to the organisers of a sym posium devoted to the works of Polish émigré composers which took place in Warsaw in 1988, a project initiated by the Musicology Section of the Polish Composers’ Union. The conference was an exceptional event, and the first one of its kind. The papers to be presented there were to combine critical and aesthetic interpretation with artistic evaluation of the works, and some of them were to be devoted to Antoni Szalowski2. Unfortunately, the achievements of Szalowski, one of the main represen tatives of Polish Neoclassicism, were, after all, omitted from the con ference programme. Roman Palester described this as “something of a scandal”3. Referring to the title of the symposium, “Music wrongly 1 R. She also mentions Wladyslaw Malinowski, who was planning a presentation on the influence of the émigré community on the evolution of creative paths, using the music of Palester, Panufnik, Spisak and Szalow ski as examples. Ice Cream Time: The Raunchy and the Rigorous “I can think of no one else whose music combines the raunchy and the rigorous, the tender and the hyper, or the intricate and the intense with quite this passionate persuasiveness.” —Fred Frith, Prologue to Skin Nick Didkovsky is an accomplished composer, virtuoso guitarist, and computer programmer who works on the cusp between the concert hall and the rock-and-roll club—territory that is only now beginning to be taken seriously. In his book American Music in the Twentieth Century Kyle Gann has written that “Nick Didkovsky is one of the most unusual composers of his generation, with a computer-generated complexity to his ensemble music that goes beyond totalism.”1 Didkovsky’s compositions are rigorously conceived, yet leave plenty of room for spontaneous input. He freely combines intuition with meticulous systematic techniques. He has tapped into what one might describe as a typically American way of making music—iconoclastic and formalist without being overly uptight. Combining complex rhythms, harmonies, and textures with the visceral energy of rock music he creates work that is cutting-edge (albeit more Downtown than Uptown), rigorous, and subversive. His employment of asymmetrical meters, gratuitous dissonance, and tonally ambiguous harmonies rubs against the pop sensibility implied by the compositional forms and instrumentation with which he works. The aspects of directness or accessibility inherent in his work refuse to kowtow to Romantic notions of beauty, or a bankrupt Postmodernist pastiche. The sense of compositional and technological inventiveness in Didkovsky’s music bears resemblance to that of other maverick composer-hacker-performers such as Salvatore Martirano, Larry Polansky, David Rosenboom, and George Lewis.

  • Sonatas for Violin and Basso Continuo Written by British Composers in the First Half of the Eighteenth Century Ma
SONATAS FOR VIOLIN AND BASSO CONTINUO WRITTEN BY BRITISH COMPOSERS IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY MAGDALENA KOSTKA Dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cardiff University School of Music June 2014 ii Abstract The sonata for violin and basso continuo was one of the most popular instrumental genres in early eighteenth-century Europe, as is clearly evident from the numerous works by Italian, German and French composers of the period, whose contributions are widely known and documented. Violin sonatas by British-born composers of the period, on the other hand, have largely been neglected by scholars and performers and no systematic examination of this repertoire has thus far been conducted. The present thesis attempts to contextualise this rich and fascinating repertoire and view it holistically. It aims to contribute substantially to knowledge about the British violin sonata during the period and enhance our understanding of its function, content, dissemination and performance. Fifteen collections of sonatas for violin and continuo written by British-born composers in the first half of the eighteenth century have been selected for detailed analysis. These works have been examined from two different perspectives: as social phenomena and as aesthetic objects. Following relevant introductory materials contextualising the research, the first part of this thesis presents biographical accounts of the selected composers, their careers and musical environment, and the circumstances surrounding the publication and distribution of their sonatas. In Part II the sonatas under scrutiny are analysed in terms of their external designs and internal forms, tonal scope, and harmonic and melodic vocabulary, as well as their technical demands.
