The Pleistocene to Holocene transition in North China witnessed the rise of broader spectrum subsistence alongside a series of cultural changes, including adoption of food production, highly mobile lifeways being replaced by sedentism, and the formation of new social organization based on their agricultural land–use patterns. From the perspective of technological change, this project aims to build a socio–ecological framework to examine the cultural change of prehistoric microblade–based societies. In contrast to previous studies, the present research employs a macroecological approach based on Binford’s Constructing Frames of Reference (2001) to reconstruct the behaviors and demography of prehistoric foraging groups, under both modern and LGM climate conditions. The Manis Mastodon Site Raven Taylor Division - Junior History Paper Word Count - 1562 Since I was little, I’ve wanted to help animals. Naturally, for me as a five-year-old, my dream job was to become a vet. There was something about helping more than just the dogs and cats, so my enthusiasm for becoming a vet turned into my enthusiasm of becoming a zoologist. Around age 9, I met a lady named Iesha while my mom and I were on our way to Arizona. We started talking and then Iesha told us she had just been Hawaii helping leatherback turtles. The stranger sitting next to me quickly became the coolest person I had ever met. She went on to explain that she was going to Arizona to help the bats at a festival so they wouldn’t go extinct from a fungus. All I knew at that point was that I wanted to do what she did. She got to travel the world and save animals, and I thought that was really fantastic. So, yet again, my dream job changed to becoming a zoologist that traveled around the world and saved endangered species. Due to a recent assignment, I’ve found that the job I truly want to do, and that is under the label of Endangered Species Biologist. Since then my heart has been set on saving African Elephants from going extinct. Oddly enough, one of the topics to do for my project was to write about the mastodon, which is an animal that has gone extinct. -

Province of Nova Scotia Department of Finance MECHANISMS FOR ENHANCING THE RETIREMENT INCOME SYSTEM IN CANADA The Government of Nova Scotia is working with other provinces and territories, and the Government of Canada, to consider opportunities for enhancing Canada’s retirement income system. The overall goal is to increase savings from employment income of individuals (i.e. future retirees) who are not currently saving enough to obtain sufficient levels of replacement income to maintain their standard of living in retirement. Finance Ministers have been informed by comprehensive research as well as proposals and comments submitted by numerous interest groups and individuals. Most Ministers have agreed to consider a modest, phased-in, and fully-funded enhancement to the CPP in order to increase coverage and adequacy. Ministers further agreed to continue to work on pension innovations that would allow financial institutions to offer broad based defined contribution pension plans to multiple employers, all employees, and to the self-employed. Results of further work on technical and implementation issues will be presented at the late Fall 2010 meeting. -

This paperexplores the potentialof the economic-ecqlogical method basedon the exploitation of fishresources for Mesolithic site iden- tification, as compared to the recently popular yet indecisive technological-typologicalmethod, to predict the existence of “Mesolithic-like” sub- sistence activities in Siberia during the Sartan-Holocene“transition” period. The article is an attempt toestablish, or at least topropose, new criteria that can lead toa higher level of understandingof Mesolithic economies insubarctic and arctic regions. Also, decision-making processes that operate to achieve behavioralgoals based on efficiency of human beingsare suggested. The model, designed with respectto geographical regions identified as interbiotic zones, has the advantage of offering specific alternative hypotheses enabling the definition of both environmental properties and predicted human behavior. CARLSON glance at any Northwest Coast art book attests firmly to the existence of a highly developed tradi A tion of painting and carving wood during the nineteenth century by the ancestors of the Bella Bella and Bella Coola peoples of the central coast of British Columbia. Similarly, examination of the journals of Sir Alexander Mackenzie and George Vancouver carries this tradition backward into the last decades of the eighteenth century. The reading of Mcllwraith's, The Bella Coo/a Indians (1948), or Boas', Mythology of the Bella Coo/a (1900b) and Bella Bella Tales (1932), provides some insights into the meaning of this art in the cultures which produced it. But what of the decades, centuries and millenia which preceded both the early explorers and the later ethnographers? What art was produced Fig. 7:1. Whalebone pendant resembling a rockfish from then?
