He is lord of the sky, the rain god. *He is represented as the god of justice and mercy, the protector of the weak, and the punisher of the wicked. Poseidon *God of the sea and protector of all the water. *Widely worshiped by seamen. *His weapon is a trident, which can shake the earth, and shatter any object. *He is second only to Zeus in power amongst the gods. *He was greedy. He had a series of disputes with other gods when he tried to take over their cities. Hades *Hades is the god of the undedrworld and ruler of the dead. *He is also the god of wealth, due to the precious metals mined from the earth. *He is a greedy god who is greatly concerned with increasing his subjects. Hestia *She plays no part in myths. *She is the Goddess of the Hearth, the symbol of the house around which a new born child is carried before it is received into the family. -

7th grade Lesson Plan: It’s Greek to me: Greek Mythology Overview This series of lessons was designed to meet the needs of gifted children for extension beyond the standard curriculum with the greatest ease of use for the edu- cator. The lessons may be given to the students for individual self-guided work, or they may be taught in a classroom or a home-school setting. Golden Aphrodite
Receiving Aphrodite At first glance Aphrodite seems to be a strange paradox. She is laughter-loving Aphrodite, always keen to promote fun and romantic intrigue, the owner of a special belt full of desire and distractions (Il. 14.215-7) And yet she, often working with her son Eros, is a powerful goddess, the life force essential for the generation of all beings, and also single-mindedly destructive when her will is thwarted, maddening (S. Ant. 790) and terrible (E. Hipp. 563). Sophocles sums her mixture of playful and powerful effectively: Aphrodite is an “irresistible” goddess who “plays games” (S. Ant. 800). Of course, the paradox is not so strange. Love can indeed be a joyous or agonizing human experience, while anyone who knows the gods of Greek literature, especially of Homer, is aware that they can behave like human beings at their worst while simultaneously wielding an extreme and violent power, especially in what they can do to any mortal who challenges their supremacy. The gods are both supremely powerful over humans yet also vulnerable to any perceived human disrespect and need us almost as much as we need them. Aphrodite’s love of intrigue in human lives and insistence on her own supremacy even at some cost to the humans in whose lives she must intervene shape her portrayal in three contemporary novels in which she (and her son as assistant) is a character: sometimes her darker side is emphasized and sometimes she is more of a “laughter-lover”. The best known of these is Phillips (2007), but equally interesting are the Aphrodites of Cobbold (2009) and of Weiss (1999). -

Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on. -

Dionysus was the only Olympian god to have a mortal parent. He was the god of fertility, wine and the arts. His nature reflected the duality of wine: he gave joy and divine ecstasy, or brutal and blinding rage. He and his followers could not be contained by bonds. One would imagine that being the god of “good times” could be a pretty easy and happy existence. Unfortunately, this just doesn’t happen in the world of Greek mythology. Dionysus is called “twice born.” His mother, Semele, was seduced by a Greek god, but Semele did not know which god was her lover. Fully aware of her husband’s infidelity, the jealous Hera went to Semele in disguise and convinced her to see her god lover in his true form. -

Lecture 18 Good morning and welcome to LLT121 Classical Mythology. In the next two or three class periods, we will be considering the goddess Artemis and her twin brother Apollo, two deities who, to a greater or lesser, extent represent this idea that the ancient Greeks must bow down before the divine. If you will recall from our last few class meetings, we talked about Dionysus, the god who was the externalization of partying, wine, and ecstatic possession, feel the power, feel the god inside you, feel the burn, and tear a few live animals apart. We also discussed the goddess Aphrodite, that wild and crazy goddess who is the externalization of the power of love, the power that, if you are lucky, at some point or another in your life, turns your mind to Jell-o and turns you into a love automaton. I wish you all such good luck. This is one half of the Greek psyche and this is one half of everybody’s psyche. The other half is represented by Artemis and Apollo, a goddess and a god who stand for getting a grip. Artemis is a virgin. She guards her virginity jealously. We’re going to go over a few stories this morning talking about what a bad career move it is to try to put the moves on the goddess Artemis. The god Apollo is not exactly chased. He is a bundle of contradictions, which represents, in and of himself, the full range of contradictions located, again, in the human psyche. When I believe it was Nietzsche who wanted to formulate his idea of the cosmic, he didn’t take out, oh, say, Artemis and Aphrodite. -

Journal of Literature and Art Studies, October 2015, Vol. 5, No. 10, 930-945 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2015.10.013 D DAVID PUBLISHING Myth and Origins: Men Want to Know José Manuel Losada Université Complutense, Madrid, Spain Starting with a personal definition of “myth”, this paper seeks to substantiate the claim that every myth is essentially etiological, in the sense that myths somehow express a cosmogony or an eschatology, whether particular or universal. In order to do that, this study reassesses Classical and Judeo-Christian mythologies to revisit and contrast the narratives of origin—of the cosmos, of the gods and of men—found in ancient polytheism and in Judeo-Christian monotheism. Taking into consideration how these general and particular cosmogonies convey a specific understanding of the passage of time, this article does not merely recount the cosmogonies, theogonies, and anthropogonies found in the Bible and in the works of authors from Classical Antiquity, but it also incorporates a critical commentary on pieces of art and literature that have reinterpreted such mythical tales in more recent times. The result of the research is the disclosure of a sort of universal etiology that may be found in mythology which, as argued, explains the origins of the world, of the gods, and of men so as to satisfy humankind’s ambition to unveil the mysteries of the cosmos. Myth thus functions in these cases as a vehicle that makes it possible for man to return the fullness of a primordial age, abandoning the fleeting time that entraps him and entering a time still absolute. -

Greek Gods & Goddesses The Greek Gods and GodessesMyths https://greekgodsandgoddesses.net/olympians/ The Twelve Olympians In the ancient Greek world, the Twelve great gods and goddesses of the Greeks were referred to as the Olympian Gods, or the Twelve Olympians. The name of this powerful group of gods comes from Mount Olympus, where the council of 12 met to discuss matters. All 12 Olympians had a home on Mount Olympus and that was where they were most commonly found. HADES, the god of the Underworld, preferred to live there, and POSEIDON often chose to stay in his palace under the sea. Most of the other Olympians would be on Mount Olympus year round unless they were travelling. HESTIA used to be one of the Olympians, but the constant fighting and bickering between the gods annoyed her and she eventually gave up her seat to the god of wine, DIONYSUS. Even though she left the council, Hestia still kept a home on Mount Olympus. APHRODITE was on the council but, in most Greek mythological stories, her husband HEPHAESTUS was not. At the famous Parthenon temple in Greece, there is a statue of each of the 12 Olympian gods. Hades does not have a statue, but Hephaestus does. The question of who the 12 Olympians are really depends on who is telling the story. Nobody is truly sure if Hades of Hephaestus can be classed as the Twelfth Olympian. So, because of the way Greek myths were told and retold in different ways, there are actually 14 gods and goddesses who can be considered as an Olympian god. -

Phaethon and the Sun Chariot According to the ancient myths, the Sun was put in a chariot and everyday God Helios would drive the chariot all along the sky. That is how the Sun would rise and set. According to the Greek Mythology, Phaethon, whose name means "shining", was the son of the Sun-God Helios and a mortal woman, Clymene. However, he was living only with his mother as his father had a difficult task to perform. He was responsible to drive the horse chariot with the Sun from the one side to the Earth to the other during the daytime. One day, a school-mate of Phaethon laughed at his claim that he was the son of a god and said he didn't believe him. In tears, Phaethon went to his mother and demanded proof of his paternity. Clymene assured her son that he was indeed the son of the great god Helios and sent him on his way to the palace of his father to establish his legitimacy. A delighted and hopeful Phaethon travelled to India, as there was the palace of his father who was supposed to begin every day his course from the East. When he reached the palace of Helios, he was astonished at its magnificence and luxury. His eyes were almost blinded by the dazzle of the light all around him. The palace was supported by massive columns adorned with glittering gold and precious stones, while the ceilings and doors were made with polished ivory and silver. Phaethon watched with awe the exquisite representation of the earth, the sea and sky on the walls of the palace.
